Hi Everybody, I think it's time to send out the gedcoms. Does anyone have a late one to contribute so that the file will be as complete as possible? I'll try to send the file out Sunday afternoon if my ISP will let it go through then. It is 1.44meg and contains 34,000+ people. Of course there are some duplications. PYRRHUS NELSON was born May 24, 1824 East of the Blue Ridge in Virginia. In 1830 at the age of 6, he traveled with his parents, Alexander and Sarah (Porter) Nelson, when they moved to Kentucky, settling in Adair County. One October 21, 1868, Pyrrhus Nelson purchased for $600, a 251 acre farm on Cool Springs Creek, about three miles northwest of Gradyville in Adair County. The Adair County Census for 1860 list Pyrrhus Nelson as a schoolteacher, while in 1870 & 1880 he is listed as a farmer. Other documents say he still taught through these years. Besides farming and teaching, Pyrrhus Nelson was made a deputy county clerk in 1870 and again in 1895. In May, 1896, he was appointed as a lawful attorney to prosecute a pension claim for Catherine Rodgers. The Nelson farm was sold on January 26 1928 to William Burris, and in 1969 the original house was torn down. Pyrus, Kentucky, consisting of a post office and store housed in a single building just across the creek from Pyrrhus Nelsons farm, was named for him. The building was still standing in the early 1980s, though not in operation. My question is this: Could anyone familiar with the area tell me if the building is still standing ? And could you please give me directions to the area, once I have driven to Gradyville ? Thank you so much. -Louie
I am looking for information on the parents and siblings of THOMAS JEFFERSON ROBINSON b. October 12, 1819 in Casey County. Married NANCY ROSS about 1843. She is the daughter of ROBERT ROSS AND POLLY QUINTON. Robert is the son of DANIEL ROSS and ELIZABETH BURK. Polly is the daughter of WILLIAM QUINTON AND JANE ?. I have reason to believe some of Thomas Jefferson and Nancy's children remained in Casey County after they moved to Indiana sometime after 1865 and before 1880. One daughter married a Gooch and remained in Kentucky, probably around Frankfort. I have all the names of the children and most spouses, but no information on his father or sisters and brothers. Jeff was never called Thomas, so I suspect his father may have been Thomas, also. Family legend had him serving as a blacksmith with the Union First Kentucky Cavalry from Casey County during the Civil War. I found the name on the list of soldiers, but have yet to obtain any records. They lived in the Knoblick area near the Pulaski line as far as I can tell. I have been trying for several years to pin down his parents or siblings so any help will be greatly appreciated. There are several names that seem likely relations, but I don't want to just claim them and later find out they are not related. I am in Texas so it is really difficult for me to spend much time researching in the area. I did find some Ross and Quinton data last summer, but nothing to help me with my ROBINSON line. Thanks for any and all help. Betty Workman.

If anyone has any additions or corrections, I would be most grateful So what can be said regarding whether Morning Star OAKES was Cherokee? If indeed she was, then her name was "officially" given to the census taker as Mourning to "Anglicize" it, perhaps so as not to arouse suspicion during the roundup of the Cherokee leading up to The Trail of Tears. But she is most definitely also known as Morning Star, certainly an Indian sounding name. I have already discounted her and her mother escaping from The Trail of Tears, which took place in the years of 1838 and 1839. However, in my research I have found that between 1790 and 1818 there took place a more or less voluntary migration of the Cherokee (who had lost their lands, ceded by the tribe under terms of a treaty, later violated by the whites) to new lands in Arkansas and Oklahoma. The migration followed, more or less, old hunting trails up through Tennessee to southern Kentucky, following the Green River to the Ohio, then down to the confluence with the Mississippi. This round about way was to avoid crossing the Chickasaw Nation in what is now the Jackson Purchase of Kentucky. This is exciting to me, as it would fit the location and dates perfectly to the story. Again, I ask if ANYONE on these lists has any information, family stories, legends, word of mouth; whatever, please contact me at mdeanhunt@aol.com. I will be forever grateful M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY
With half of us on this wonderful list being from a BELL line, I'm passing this on from another list, with permission. Very interesting and has BELL names. Reply to Mdeanhunt@aol.com Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 11:19:17 EST From: Mdeanhunt@aol.com Hello Friends, I have been told a MOST AMAZING story by my brother; one that I had never heard before. He told me that, in a conversation with our father, Dad related that he had been told several times by his mother ( Rachel Hiram Hedgespeth Hunt) and his grandmother (Rebecca Jane Bell Hedgespeth) that Morning Star Oakes (who was Rebecca Jane's mother) was full blood Cherokee, and not the natural child of John D. Oakes. The story goes that Morning Star, as a very small child, and her natural mother escaped during the forced relocation from the ancestral lands in what was known as The Trail of Tears. The half-starved mother and her child were befriended and given aid by John D. Oakes, a Separate Baptist minister, and his wife. The story continues; the mother died shortly after, maybe months, maybe a year or so, and the little orphan Morning Star is reared by the minister and wife and allowed to use the OAKES name, the real name not known or forgotten. Morning Star OAKES is my paternal great-grandmother! All my life I have been told that along with my English, Scottish and (recently found) Swiss blood, I was also one-eighth Cherokee! I had always thought that it was a different ancestor and have spent much time chasing the wrong rabbit. In the interest of keeping this brief, I will send another e-mail giving some specifics regarding this line. PLEASE! If there is anyone on these lists that has ANY information supporting the facts of this story, please respond to me. If there are ANY other descendant of Morning Star OAKES and John B. BELL on these lists, please respond to me. I have already proved that the part of the story about the escape from The Trail of Tears is not true. Morning Star was born about 1812 (census says in KY), and The Trail of Tears took place in 1838-1839. By this time she was already married to John B. BELL (1835). Waiting anxiously, M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY

According to the Casey Co court records Green Stapp deeded his home farm to his daughters Sarah E. Stapp and Americal Triphenia Stapp in1898. He was not listed in the 1900 census. How can I find his death date that has to be between 1898 and 1900. As there was not a Casey Co. paper at that time, what other papers could his obituary be listed in? where could I find info on his death? Betty in Tulsa OK
