    1. [KYCASEY-L] gedcom
    2. Larry Witt
    3. Hello Casey Co. friends, I have had a few people who were not able to view the gedcom as I sent it. The reason for this problem seems to be the self-extracting .exe extension I put on the file so that people would not have to search for an unzipper if they were not familar with a zipped file. The file is 12 meg unzipped so I shrunk it using pkzip. In order to use the file a user merely has to click on the file and the .exe extension expodes the file into the full size gedcom which then is opened by a family tree program such as Family Tree Maker. I am completely unfamilar with Mac so I do not understand when people say they can not use an exe file. Some people have requested I break the file into smaller pieces but today when I attempted to do this the file was readable but many connection were broken. It also adds many unknown persons to the file. After chewing on this problem for a while, I have decided that the best solution for this is to ask for people who need a smaller or a non-exe file to send a request to my personal email soon and I will respond in about a week with an attachment containing all of the seperate gedcoms. This means the files will have to be merged by the people requesting such but Ca la vie!!! I also hope that anybody who has not sent in their gedcom will please do so now. Thanks alot everybody. Merry Christmas!!!!!! Best Wishes, Larry Witt 3271 Hwy. 39 Somerset, Ky. 42503

    3. Louie, in order to use a GedCom file you must have some type of genealogy program, It does not have to be FTM.......you can use PAF, Brother's Keeper, Roots, Reunion, Family Tree etc...........and whatever program you use must support use of a GedCom file........Without a Program you can save the GedCom file to disk for whenever you do have a Program...............but you are limited greatly to what you can do without a program.........Sorry! Hal

    1. [KYCASEY-L] conversion assistance on gedcom
    2. I would appreciate some technical assistance on opening the gedcom databank or a copy of the file in a format/size I can handle. Basic request: is someone willing to send it to me in two pieces on a standard zip format (not an "exe" zip)? It doesn't matter how the big file is split, I'll be splicing people in on an individual basis to my master file. I run Reunion 5 for Mac on a Macintosh PowerPC, max capacity 30,000 names and can read gedcom. Have both ZIP and STUFF conversion programs, but cannot open a file with an exe extension. Thanks Paula Wethington Rose PWRose@aol.com

    3. Might be Phyills, I don't recall the time involved, but do recall going for a cold drink and some cookies.....If I remember right there are approximately 32,000 people in the gedcom......worked like a charm for me......including the d/l and the unzipping....if we all followed the instructions from Larry about how to do it.......... (^o^) Hal, from sunny and cool Northern California! BTW, guys and gals.......I found the following address in the current issue of Yahoo Mag: WWW.btinternet.com/~friends4ever/y2000.htm This site has a downloadable small program that will check out your computers' clock to see if it will pass the y2k problem. Does not check the CMOS clock etc...but is a simple test...I tried it this morning and it gave me a "Passed" grade for y2k and for "Leapyear"..........be sure to read the instructions first!!!!!!

If you don't have genealogy software that will read GED files, they can be read by you with a text reader such as Wordpad. But it's something you kind of have to learn how to do by trial and error. Also, you might check the AOL online tutorials for more info on how to work with gedcom files. Click Keyword and type "Roots." 3. You don't use FTW until after the gedcom is received. The time it takes to down load is determined by the speed of your modem and computer. Data will transmit at 56k but in Springfield the max is 24k. As I understand, 56k is available only between certain major cities and Springfield is not one of them. What computer do you have? 3. Just a thought Louie, but with what genealogy program are you trying to use it? My FTM 5.0 took it as an imported file jsut like water off a ducks back...slick that is. I created a "New" Family File called "Caseyco" and unzipped the file right into that new family file........when FTM displayed a window asking which names from the total list did I want to include in my file, I clicked on >> and included them all (wow, about 32,000). For Larry, works like a charm........but have found that I have additional data on paper that apparently was not in my GedCom.......How would you like to handle that??? Some of the data may provide links between some of the other families beside my Rainwater's.......I started to add the data to your GedCom, but decided that I should probably add it to my Family File and then provide you a new Irving.GED.........but that wouldn't put the data into files other than yours and mine.........I also wondered about some of the individuals( from other's Ged files) that had only a name and no connections or vital stats.......I ran a exercise to match individuals and was able to reduce the total number of people in the file, but only by a few..........matching a full data file with a file having only a name is risky business and I didn't dare erase an individual of the same name............... But thanks for the effort you put into this thing, it's helpful.......I was especially pleased to see some Jasper data..........my Mother use to speak of Gid Jasper.........but it will take me awhile to understand that connection, other than I recall Mother saying that the Jasper's were the school teachers during her childhood (1901-etc) in Mintonville. Hal, from Sunny Northern California!

    2. Hello, I had similar trouble when I received mine. I use windows 95 and had to go to MS-Dos mode to unzip the file. Copy the file first to the destination directory before unzipping it. Just typing the name of the file should unzip it. Richard Hollis
