Christy, I just returned from the main Library here in Louisville, KY. If you have access to the soundex records they are terrific. Just look under the index code: G300 in the soundex record for the 1880 Kentucky Census. It lists everybody in one way or another. I found my Grandmother's Father's name tonight. I had to look for her maiden name in different forms, but finally I found it. On the census record she was listed as daughter and it had her birthdate and race on it, also was listed: her siblings, and anyone else living at the residence at the time the census was taken, even if it was a nephew just staying for a while, etc. Good luck, Sharamick@aol.com
Hi All, to clarify a bit: Using IE of course results in launching Outlook Express which is the Mail Program used with IE by Worldnet and other ISP's.....then follow instructions. Also, in my example I was pointing out that with the default changes I described you will no longer have such messages as those I described just below the instructions for changing the defaults. As long as I'm in this deep, I might also mention that many subscribers after reading their mail, have information to share......so they click on "Reply" or "Reply To All" and instead of sending the info to the person that asked for it, they of course sent the data, along with the original message asking for the data, to ALL of us. We all should look up at the address line to see where our message is going before we click the "Send" button.........If you want it to go to "Susie Q" and the address reads "Casey-L@Rootsweb" or other similar address, please address the message to "Susie Q". Don't know Susie Q's address......."Piece of Cake"...while you are changing your defaults per the first message, click on the "General" Tab and find the 4th block down, which reads "Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book"......click that block to insert a check/X.........and people you write to regularly will have their address in your Address Book........ Enough of Computers 101........... Hope this helps each of us! Hal, from sunny California
No Ralph. it isn't necessary, nor is it desireable. It's just that a sizeable group in every maillist isn't fully computer knowledgeable so they use the pre-sets or defaults that came with their computer. Nothing wrong with that of course, but a few changes can make it much easier for the rest of us. I use IE 4.0 for my mail, but most mail programs are about the same. To make a change in your default settings to the following: Go into your mail program. For IE I click on "Tools", get a dropdown menu and find "Options", click on "Options", this gives me a rather large dropdown menu with a number of tabs. Select, and click on "Send" and when that tab comes up look toward the middle and locate "Include Messages in Reply". If that block has a check/X in it, click on it to remove the check/X............While there, look toward the top of the page and find "Mail" and "News", if a check/X is present for HTML then click on "Plain Text" in both "mail" and "News"........that will stop some of the time consumming "headers" from being produced along with your message............ What the above results in, is that if I send you a message listing 50 burials at a cemetery, you get the 50 burials list..however, when you send me a response of "Thanks", I don't get the list of 50 burials back with that message........also, if I have posted the list of burials to the maillist, and suppose 25 subscribers want to say "Thanks", then I get 25 messages each listing the 50 burials......and we wonder why the Internet is crowded with mail. Hope this helps.......... Hal from sunny Northern California!
Can anyone tell me where the Archives Building is located in Frankfort, Kentucky and their hours? And any places close to spend the night, need to be clean and nice, but not expensive. Thank you Roberta
Pat-- I will be in Casey County the 17th of this month and plan to bring my WFT records with me on disk. All the lines are KY related; however, not all are Casey County. Would you prefer that I strip out those which do not have direct connection with Casey County? I know that storage space is always a concern in this kind of data base. Regards, Annette Smiley P.S. I enjoy the chit-chat, also. It tends to be much more genteel that what I have observed on some other genealogy lists. -----Original Message----- From: Pat Brooks <grmabrooks@kih.net> To: KYCASEY-L@rootsweb.com <KYCASEY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, May 05, 1999 8:40 AM Subject: [KYCASEY-L] Casey County Fair to have Genealogy >Hello All: >Just a note for your information. I get the digest. V99, #97, was just too much. Is it really necessary to have such long messages quoted in their entirety? All of a digest? And a digest included in a digest? And a post and answers to that post and answers to those in answering a post? Ralph Moore, Ph.D. p024979b@pb.seflin.org
Hi All, I too plan to visit Casey this Summer an d I too am willing to share the info that I have. My two sisters and I plan to stay in Campbellsville and visit our aunt and cousin in Gum Lick. In addition I plan to visit with my old friend from the time that I attended school in Clementsville, Dale Wolford. We have had many scuffles in my grandfather's pig lot. Henry Alfred Wethington. I am seriously considering attending the July 4th picnic at St Bernard's church and thus visit as many of my cousins still living in that area. So it is lucky that I am retired from the Post office and have the steady income to travel as well as do serious research. I have timeshares in Mexico and I love to visit that country almost as much as I enjoy chatting with the wonderful people on the Casey chat line. If we're not able to come, can we mail either the information, or the floppy or disc to someplace to be placed on computer? Would the library to search for us. I seem to be at a dead end. Hello All: Just a note for your information. Casey County will be having it's first County Fair this summer, July 22, 23, 24th. A few interested in genealogy have put together a plan for an information gathering area during the fair. The plan was the idea of Larry Witt of Sommerset. We plan to have two computers in use with volunteer information gathering programs set up. I have installed the family tree maker program on these and we will ask people of Casey County to bring in their family tree information. The information volunteer will type this on the FTM family page and give the persons a printout or Generation Report of their information. After the Fair, I will download each family onto a disc, label the Surname and place this information in the Casey County Library for all to share. Much of this I will also download on the computer FTM program in the Casey County Library Research Center so that others can share in tracing family information. If any of you out there would like to volunteer a few hours of typing information into the program during the fair, please contact me. We will make up a schedule of volunteer information takers and post this for the Fair. This will be advertised ahead of the opening of the fair, so that people here can jot down their family names and dates and have time to jog their memory of notes and stories for the family pages. P.S. I enjoyed the chatting back and forth of the those on the page, it made me feel like I could get to know some of you out there. Please don't change, I don't want our page to be too dry yet we do need to use some constraints. Love you all, and come on down and see us sometime. King Regards, Pat Brooks, Casey County, KY.
Christy and Judy: Do you know how to use the soundex information for the 1880 census? This will probably tell you what county and page number for your Polly Jane and family. Let me know. MissDixieB@AOL.com

But there are some mighty friendly folks on the OKGen list, who chat mainly about genealogy but also look out for each other, esp. at times like this with all the tornadoes in Oklahoma. If they hadn't gotten to know each other so well by chatting, they wouldn't have been so concerned. Sometimes it's nice to get a feel for our fellow researchers. After all, we're all in this together! Maybe what we need is a KYGen list! :-) ~~Anne Sommers Wityk dommana@aol.com Looking for: FOGLE & PORTER in Kentucky and Maryland
Hello fellow researchers, I am wondering if it would be possible for us to use the private e-mail address of others for messages of a personal nature; i.e. request for hotel directions, weather reports, land purchases, etc. Thus we could have our private conversations, and receive only information which might be of value to all on the list. Just a thought, Larry
Judy About the time I got your invitation for a cup of coffee, I bought a new computer, one that would run voice activated programs---during the setup I lost temporarily all my e-mail---took a computer geek 4 hours to get it straightened out. Now I am back in business, but I forgot when you said you were coming down. Do you know of anyone in your area of Casey County who has a small plot of land for sale. I am looking for a place to build my retirement home. This is what I am looking for---and it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Wanted land for my dream retirement home----- Location either in Casey County or Western -Southern Lincoln County. 1 acre or less---must be wooded----tired of mowing yards for past 30 years----want to bulldoze out a spot in center for house with a 10 ft. strip of green grass on each side and leave rest in woods. Would prefer on a blacktop road but not with a 1,000 cars whizzing by a day---but not so isolated it takes a 4 wheel drive to get home on a sunny dry day. Prefer city water--good neighbors---land can be gently rolling ---but not so steep it takes a sky lift to get from spot A to spot B. Willing to pay going rate for said land, but hope seller don't charge like there is a diamond mine on the property. Any suggestion or ideas for helping me find this dream spot would be greatly appreciated. Tell me again when you are coming down. KY Dar stated in a book that Rev.War Soldier Osbourne Coffey and wife Molly Nightingale were bur. Middleburg. Did not say which cemetary (but I would think the older part) I have been there but did not see the markers. Neither did I see one for his nephew, who d. at Middleburg according to War of 1812 pension application of his then (2nd)wife Elizabeth. His name is A.Jackson Lanham. Does anyone know where at Middleburg, my great-gr grandfather might be buried? I suppose there were other cemetaries? Judy
