    2. Charlene, I'm not a registered land surveyor, but I've had to run property descriptions back a few times, so I've walked that rocky road several times. I can't tell for certain without reading the document. But I believe you're going to have to find where Jesse Crutcher, Jesse Riches and Wesley Davis lived during that time period. You may be lucky and find them on an old plat book. but if you don't have any experience in surveying and legal land descriptions, I recommend checking with a few title companys in Casey County. Chances are that they might be familiar with the names and can give you a good answer for a nominal fee. I doubt that you want to pay for a complete title search just to satisfy your curiosity. The title company's are used to this of search and quite often have private papers and information that the Courthouse doesn't have. Dick Scotti

    3. I read Patrick's e-mail on land patents and grants with interest. On a trip earlier this month to Casey county, I discovered a book called Surveyors Record. Although a search of deed books had come up with nothing on my great-great grandmother Julia Chasteen or her father Jesse Crutcher, there was a record of two surveys for Julia in this book. In 1871, Wm. Smith, "DSCC" (deputy surveyor Casey County?), for J.B. Carson, SCC, surveyed "for Julia Chasteen, assignee of Jesse Crutcher, who was assignee of Christopher R. Coffey, 40 acres of land by virtue of part of an entry made at the Surveyors office of Casey County on the 26th day of December 1870 on part of a Casey County court land warrant which (was) issued at the July term 1863 for 106 acres situated in Casey County on the ridge between Woodsfork and Green River..." At the library, I found on microfilm a court order from the July term 1863, "C.R. Coffey having paid to the court ten dollars and thirty cents for which the court awards to said Coffey a land warrant for two hundred and six acres which the surveyor of Casey County is ordered to survey to said Coffey out of any unappropriated lands in this county." In this case, at least on paper, it appears the court granted Mr. Coffey land which had not yet been surveyed. Since I didn't see any other entries for Coffey that month, I assume the 106 instead of 206 acres was an clerical error. My real question: Does anybody know or have any idea how I would find out where specifically this land was? The survey talks about hickory trees and poplars and mentions the 40 acres bordering on Jesse Crutchers' line, Jesse Riches' line, and Wesley Davis' corner. I spoke with one of the ladies at the clerk's office and she had no idea how to proceed. Anybody with any ideas?

    3. Shirley, I haven't forgotten you. Have had trouble making new computers talk to old and also to a printer. Finally solved the problems and am working at catching up on correspondence. Will get back to you about Rice's and Phillips. My Rice's were in Adair and Taylor Counties, moved to Illinois and then to Oregon in 1862. John Stamper Rice was the son of Joseph Randolph Rice and Abigail Waller. Joseph was the son of Randolph Rice and Sally Puryear. Randolph was a revolutionary soldier and had a slew of children who I have not followed. If you are interested I can send you a family group sheet. Another name you mention is Guthrie. Guthrie's were in Missouri with my Phillips family but I haven't found a connection to them yet. My connection is thru my grandmother Wright's family Polk. There was an Adam Guthrie Polk who lived in Indiana but died at The Dalles OR when he drowned trying to get to the Willamette Valley in 1840 something. An Adam Guthrie married a Hannah Polk in KY but how they are connected to my Grandmother's Uncle I don't know. Will send you via snail mail a copy of my extract from Charles Phillips will. I found it in the Adair County Library in Columbia, KY. Always Barbee Barbee Hodgkins bhodgkin@OregonVOS.net

    3. Hello Bertha, No, I'm afraid that he is too young. My David was born in 1824 in Pendleton District, SC. Somehow he got to Meigs Co., TN and married Cassander Bridwell/Breedwell. Then he showed up in Rollings, KY, where is said to have died and is buried. After he died Cassander moved back to Rhea, Co., Tn and married a man named AJ Pritchett. Is there really a Rollings, KY? Thanks, Barbara

    2. Cindy, Land on the Tax records was 1) first surveyed before a land patent or grant was given. THis was one of the requirements for being granted land. you had to pay the surveyor to make a survey and register it with the state land office. who ever paid for the survey is listed in the survey category. 2) then when a land patent/grant was issued (meaning the requirement of settlement and development was met) whoever got the grant was the person in whose name the land was entered 3) then the person chargeable is the person who owns it now and owes the tax. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ if the three are different there is a story there. rare is the person surveyed different from the person entered since the two occur very close together maybe only a year or two apart. (but I have a case in NC where the wife paid for the survey before she married and then the husband got the patent after they married) But the person chargeable is the current owner and the land may have changed hands sevearl times from the original patent holder (the person entered) I advise that your can use the names as a clue. For instance if the person entered and chargeable difer then you can go to the county deed records and look for a deed from the original patent holder to the current owner. perhaps the deed will have family data or state some useful relationship between the two of interest in your genealogy work. 3. Hi Barbee, Your surname list at the end of your post contained another name that I am researching from the Casey county KY area, Rice. Here is what I have on the Phillips and Rice families. I hope that we can make a connection. You also menitoned a will, is this for Charles Phillips and his wife Agnes (Nancy) Riley? I would "love" to have a copy of it, if it pertains to Charles. Charles Phillips was born befor 1765 married on 22 May 1782 in Rockbridge Co. VA and died 27 Mar. 1826 in Casey co.Ky. His spouse was Agnes (Nancy), I have no other information on her. Their children: Allen abt 1803, Amy, no data, Anne, no data, James b. 29 Sept 1783 m. 11 Feb 1849 Howard co. MO, unknown death date, spouses Mary "Polly" Minor, (2nd) Isabella Brinton, Mary no data, Nancy, no data, Sarah b. bef 1790 m. 14 Sept 1807 Washington co. KY d. aft 1850 to John Prewitt, then finally my line, John Riley born 10 Aug 1792 in Casey co.KY, m. 15 Aug 1822 d. 5, Sept 1887 REnsselaer RAlls co. MO, spouses, Mary Dye Greenwood & (2nd) Polly Guthrie. John's data: spouse: Mary Dye Greenwood d/o Nimrod Greenwood & Catherine Dye McMiller b. 4 July 1804 KY d. 16 July 1828 KY children: Catherine Dye Phillips b. 27 Feb 1824 Ralls co. Children with Polly Guthrie: Elizabeth b. abt 1832 no other data, Charles H. b. abt 1836 m. 5 Dec 1867 Ralls co. Mo, to Susan Salling, Sarah b. 28 Feb 1836 (twins??) Frances Ellen b. 1841, m. 16 Nov 1865 spouse Willialm Thomas Carothers, William G. b. 2 Jan 1844 m. 30 July 1877 m. Emma Greer & (2nd) Ella Loftiss An intersting note: James Phillips, Johns brother, was married to Mary Minor, sister of George Minor who was married to Isabelle Brinton. After George's death James then married Isabelle. As to the Rice surname: This connection was through Warren county KY. Tabitha Rice was the d/o John M. Rice and Patsy (Polly) Johnson, d/o Noiel Johnson. Apparently, many of that area got together and travelled to Missouri, first stopping in Howard county, then onto Boone, although if memory serves me correctly, it was all Howard county at that point. Tabitha met and married Berryman Wren on 11 March 1818 in Warren. They came to Missouri very early in the 1820's as most of their children, if not all, were born in Missouri. Does any of this look familiar? Hopefully,we can establish a connection, looking forward to hearing from you, Sincerely, Shirley Minor Larson 11125 Main St. Apt. 5 New Middletown OH 444442 Barbee Hodgkins wrote: > >Hello Gary, > >Did you by any chance receive my earlier post?
