I'm new to the list. My Shockley family seem to be one of those families, that just seem to miss the census taker every 10 years. Richard and his family are buried in Gross Cemetery in Randolph Co. AR., that's the only place I found them together. It hasn't helped that I was told they came from Ireland around 1860. This is the information I have, hope someone can help me. I will gladly share what I have. Thanks, Sharon in Georgia According to the 1910 and 1920 census of Randolph Co. Ar., David Russell Shocklee said his parents were born in Kentucky, (NOT IRELAND). David Russell Shocklee was born in 1870 or 71 in Kentucky. Found Richard Shockly born 1831 in Casey Co. Ky. (my records have b. 1812) Found marriage of Richard Shockley and Ellen Hinkle, February 3, 1856, Muhlenberg, Ky. Richard, Ellen and Lucy Shockley found in 1860 Census in Ky., no Frank, but Frank was born in 1848, according to his headstone. Lucy was born 1860. Maybe Frank was from a previous marriage or he was a family member living with them after the 1860 Census. David Russell Shocklee had a cousin Francis Shockley, married to Matilda. Francis and Matilda lived in Randolph County, Arkansas. ( David is the son of Richard Syrl Shocklee ) Notes of a possible cousin: Francis Marion Shockley b. 1859 AR (s/o John T. & Mariah J. Shockley) married my gggaunts Matilda and Jane Manerva Starling (ds/of Middleton & Manerva Starling) and I have BTW, Francis Marions' father John T. is said to be born in KY in 1832. 1900 Census Randolph Co., AR - Ingram Twp ED103 SD2 V34 enum. 6/2/1900 by John W. Larry; As long as you give folks the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes people are just beginning and have nothing, or very little to give in exchange. I just found a gentleman researcher who has been working on my lines for decades. He could take one of my lines back to 400 a.d. Before I found him it was a brick wall. I tied right into the information he had on my line, so there was no doubt it was the same family. But all I had to give were 4 generations down that line! He had given gedcoms and reports that took decades of time to accumulate. I'm sure it will end up in the hands of some young researchers later down the line, because he passed it on to me! But for now, I am a taker on this line. Sometimes. people are new, just putting feelers out and then give up Sometimes, we loose messages, and much as we think about responding the opportunity is gone with the message Sometimes, people don't know they should answer all inquiries. I try to answer every personal email. A few have slipped through the cracks, and if any of you are missing a response from me, I want you to know it wasn't intentional!!! And yes, there probably those who just want to take. But, most folks true in their intent to do genealogical research are BIG GIVERS. I haven't met many who take advantage. They don't stay long enough for me to feel bad about them. In KY I am researching the areas between BARDSTOWN and LIBERTY...surnames are: SWEENEY, STALLINGS, HALL, PHILLIPS, LEEMAN, NOE, BEAM, PEAK, NEVITT, BEALL, MAGRUDER, MILBURN, CARTWRIGHT, and quite a few more..........Christen A. Joseph, this is a world-wide problem. Each of us feels like it is just us but "taint" so. You shared with me. I hope I shared what I had. If I failed to do so, let me know. Hazel

Yes Larry, I have had the problem you mentioned below, with one of my first cuz. I guess everyone has a "taker" in their faimly. But we get past them and go on with the "givers". There is a lot more "givers" out there than "takers", only one bad seed, doesn't keep the rest of us from growing. Roberta Joseph L Clements wrote: > There is another side of the coin, however. There are many wonderful and sharing individuals associated with this list and I want thank them as a group as I have done individually. I have received much valuable info to compliment and add to my family history, and for this I will be eternally grateful. These individuals know who they are and how much I appreciate there work. There is another side of the coin, however. There are the givers and sharers and then there are the takers, those that take your info and never send anything in return, even after much cajoling. Therefore I have become very skeptical about sending info to anyone. Has anyone out there also experienced this problem? Larry
That was a wonderful article on geodes, but before we get all sentimental and idealize our ancestors as simple wonderful and perfect people, we should remember the common name used by many in Casey Co and that area for geodes. It was not very faltering to a group of people and not a epithet we would like to hear repeated today. Do not try to erase the warts from our forefathers. Larry
May I be so bold as to make a suggestion to all? When you use someone else's mail to send your message, please change the subject. For example, see above. This is not about Geodes at all. I have reached for the delete key several times this morning on letters with a Geodes subject only to notice that the sender is asking for help with a family or a lookup. The subject line is your attention-getter. Just want to help. Hazel
Hello Larry, I think you may want to read the"Geode" story again. Don't you think that the shell is the whole family and the crystals within are the individuals.? As Jackie wrote, some crystals are whole while some are clay crusted and broken, Don't you think those represent our forefathers warts? I for one loved the story and hope Jackie will share more with us. Ina J.

Jackie, Your beautiful piece, "Geodes", brought tears to my eyes. We have only recently discovered Casey County, the home of my husband's ancestors, the Sluders and the Durhams. It is a truly unique place. I believe that your geode simile can be applied to all genealogy research. I will keep it in my files. Dear Jackie Zortman, thank you so very much for "Geodes". You brought back a memory long forgotten of the times I spend with my cousins during the summers in Kentucky. CHELF Ridge is named after my CHELF ancestors and it was a nice surprise to see it mentioned in your writings. Thank you. I get so much from this list. It really surprises me to see all the information that comes through with my email everyday. Thanks again, Pat
