Carter researchers, Someone asked for directions to the MADDIX Cemetery on the list and another researcher asked me for directions to the STEVENS Cemetery on Pole Cat Branch. I copied some notes from my Family Tree Maker database this morning. I visited the area last year with Melissa Miller and Vicki Gilbert. We mapped the directions to several cemeteries on the way to the Stevens Cemetery. My notes are listed below. -- Begin -- I visited the STEVENS Cemetery on Pole Cat Branch on Saturday, 25 Jul 1998 (former location of George W. Stevens Farm). Directions were recorded from Route 182 in Grahn (Carter County, KY) starting at the Macedonia Church of Old Regular Baptists. At the intersection of route 182 and 3298 turn left at the Macedonia Church of Old Regular Baptists. You will be traveling on Church Ridge Road. At .4 miles you will pass the ROAR Cemetery (a road turns to the right for the cemetery). At .7 miles you will encounter a fork in the road. Take the right fork. At 1.1 miles you will pass the CARROLL Cemetery (once again it's a turn off to the right). At 1.2 miles the road will form a t-shape and you will be forced to turn left or right. Turn right. At 2.1 miles you will encounter a fork in the road. Turn left onto Big Sinking Road. At 2.3 miles you will pass the MADDIX Cemetery (a road to the right; .1 mile from the turn off), At 3.2 miles you will encounter a small fork in the road, stay to the right (left road goes to Littleton Road--don't take this road). At 4.1 miles you will encounter a dirt path/road that climbs a 45 degree plane. This is the location of the former farm of George W. Stevens, oldest child of William Stevens and Nancy Gilbert. Travel to the top of this hill to visit the STEVENS Cemetery (About a half mile to the top of the hill). If you bypass the entrance you can travel to 5.0 miles and turn right to enter the GILBERT Cemetery. The cemetery is .2 miles from the main road. -- End -- Keep in mind there are multiple cemeteries in Carter Co., KY that contain large numbers of surnames. Their are at least two large Stevens/Stephens cemeteries as well as several Carroll cemeteries. If you don't find your ancestor in the first surname cemetery you locate, keep looking. Good luck!
