I am on a quest for a friend. I am looking for some kind soul in Carter County who has access to old newspapers. I am looking for a 'possible' newspaper article on a Joesph Carroll that was hit by a train on about July 13, 1941 and died from his injuries on July 16, 1941. He died in Boyd County at a hospital and we do have the death certificate, but is there anyone out there that can do a look up and see if anything we written in the newspaper about this accident? Thanks bunches, Cassy. -- 1. Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings which our loved ones can shine down on us. 2. Did you know in Kentucky it is illegal for a woman to marry the same man four times? 3. A law in Kentucky also forbids a housewife to move the furniture in the home without her husbands consent. Frankie. No offense taken... I merely did not understand the respone. Most of us historians would love to know of your adventures in the Alaskan frontier. My post was inquisitive and not intended to be an attack. Most of us now searching our truthful roots seek knowledge othose from which we descend. Ron, I think Frankie's comment is in regards to my signature tag which if you read number 3 it states: A law in Kentucky also forbids a housewife to move the furniture in the home without her husbands consent. Just some of the quirky laws that need to be done away with. Cassy. -- 1. Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings which our loved ones can shine down on us. 2. Ron asked if I would share my family and adventures in AK? I will start with ADAMS/LARGE/LYON family line and sprinkle Alaskan tidbits here and there... Right now, I have a brother living in Grayson, one in Bruin (Elliott), one in Greenup County, and one in Boyd County. I have several cousins (1st and more distant) in Carter. My parents: Manson Adams, b. in Lawrence Co. (as were his Adams father, grandfather, and great-grandfather) and Mabel Green, b. in Willard, Carter Co., KY. Manson was killed in Willard in 1956. Mom now lives in Boyd Co. LARGE/LYON (I have dates and other info, if anyone is interested.) My father's maternal grandfather, Thomas L. Large, was b. in Carter Co. in 1856, the son of THOMAS LARGE, b. 20 February 1802 in Russell County, Virginia; d. April 30, 1883 in Lewis County, Kentucky; buried Ash Cemetery, Carter County, Kentucky; m. April 20, 1843 in Lawrence County, Kentucky to NANCY LYON, b. 23 December 1817 in KY, d/o JAMES LYON and SARAH MELINDA SARTER (Nancy Lyon is believed to have m. 1st to JOHN SKEENS); d. 10 March 1907 in Carter Co., KY; buried Ash Cemetery, Carter County, Kentucky I have yet to determine the father of Thomas Large, b. 1802, but suspect he is the son of the Robert Large listed in the 1820 Floyd Co. Census, as there is also a Thomas Large, age 18 with wife, listed in the same census.... . Some say that Thomas's father was THOMAS LARGE b. ca 1759 Pittsylvania Co., VA; d. 29 September 1827 Big Blaine Creek, Lawrence Co., KY; m. 08 October 1782 in Pittsylvania Co., VA to MILLY ADKINS, b. ca 1760 in Virginia; d. after 1850 in Lawrence Co., KY, but other information seems to contradict this. I do believe that Robert Large is most likely the grandfather of the Thomas Large who married Nancy Lyon. James Lyon's 2nd wife was NANCY LARGE d/o William LARGE who was son of Robert LARGE. If any of you are on the [email protected] list, we have been discussing the Lyon family. One of the more notorious families involved in guerilla activities was Levi Lyon and his sons. Levi was a brother to Nancy Lyon, listed above. Other Carter Co. families to be posted: Green, Wright, Pennington, Craig.... Now for Alaskan adventures... Right now we are dealing with a bear that is becoming a pest. This is a fair sized brownie, with tracks 5-7 inches in width, about 10-12 inches long, weighing in excess of 300 lb.. Walking through the garden, uprooting the lettuce was a nuisance, as was tearing loose the waterline running from the pond and knocking over the pump. But just the other night she figured out how to get into the back side of the burn barrel and that means she is hunting garbage. Bad! But even worse is the fact that the bear is getting bolder, wandering around near the house even during the day. I've only seen the bear once- in my old strawberry patch- but our dog is constantly announcing that the bear is there, and when we go out, the tracks show it was so. So my husband and son-in-law are getting set for bear hunt!... Frankie
Ron Whitaker wrote: " Frankie. I don't understand your comment posted to this site? Ron" Sorry, Ron! It was a light-hearted response to tag on Cassie Sommers' post regarding tombstone Central updates. She had posted some archacic Kentucky laws including the one that says a wife cannot move the furniture without her husband's consent. Thanks Cassie, My grandfather and greatgrandfather Knipp are buried there. He was married a brief short time to Mary L. Jordan, daughter of John J Jordan of Lawrence Co. They were married on April 23, 1868 in Lawrence Co. And it looks as if he married again by 1870!!! According to his marriage to Mary, that was his 3rd marriage so this one to Malinda must be his 4th marriage. Here is the info from the marriage record that I found for him and Mary Jordan... Dianne in Ohio asked about a marriage record. I don't have the document, but according to the marriage info on the Carter Co. KYGenWeb page, the following can be found in Carter County Marriage Records, Book 1838, page 230: "Levi SEXTON married Sarah A. DAVIS on February 16, 1867 in Carter County, Kentucky" Thanks to the transcribers! This source has been very helpful to me in Alaska! Frankie
Hello, Looking for a copy of the marriage of Levi SEXTON to Sarah DAVIS circa 1867 in Carter County. Thanks, Dianne in Ohio
William Pennington Memorial Stone Progress Report The project underway to purchase and place a stone in the Webbville, Lawrence County, Kentucky cemetery to mark the graves of WILLIAM PENNINGTON and his wife, ABIGAIL CAUDILL is about to become a reality! On April 27, Eleanor Brewster wrote me that she had received contributions totaling seven hundred eighty dollars ($780). On May 7, Loretta Benner, great-granddaughter of Violet Anne Pennington Hylton, posted a note on the Pennington, Thompson, Sturgill & Webb MyFamily site that she had donations from descendants of Violet Pennington Hylton totaling one hundred twenty dollars ($120), which she would forward to Eleanor. This brings the total to nine hundred dollars ($900). The 2003 estimated cost of the proposed stone was $931.32, so we have almost reached the goal! It looks good for the stone being ordered and placed this summer. Isn't that wonderful? -Frankie
