Does anyone have any information on the family of George and Eleanor Nickols White orginially from Morgan County? I need information and proof of a son James, marriages etc. Thank you. Ruth Janet
Evelyn, Was Carrie (Stamper) Justice the daughter of Watt Andrew and Victoria (Gose) Stamper? I have a daughter named Carrie for them, and she was born about 1908. 1910 Census of Carter Co., KY, Pct. No. 1 - HH # 44/46 Stamper, Wat A. Head M W 27 m 1 4 y KY KY KY Victoria Wife F W 25 m KY KY KY Dot Daughter F W 4 S KY KY KY Carrie Daughter F W 1 3/12 S KY KY KY Evaline Daughter F W 2/12 S KY KY KY WATT STAMPER, 86, DIES AT GRAYSON The Daily Independent, Tuesday, November 6, 1956 GRAYSON, Nov. 6-Watt Stamper, 86, of Grayson, formerly of Olive Hill, died in Grayson Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted at p.m. Wednesday at the Bethel Church by the Rev. Miller. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery. The body is at the Malone Funeral Home. Mr. Stamper was born May 27, 1870, in Carter County, a son of William and Nancy Pendleton Stamper. Surviving are two sons, Watt Stamper, Jr., and Allie Stamper, both of Logan, W. Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Erwin of Mansfield, O.; three half-brothers, Ross Stamper of Ashland, Bill Stamper of Olive Hill and Link Stamper of Springfield, O. Actually, Watt was the son of William and Nancy (Penland) Stamper and not Nancy Pendleton I descend from the Penland and Logan families and Nancy (Penland) Stamper was the daughter of George and Susannah (Logan) Stamper. Susannah (Logan) Penland was the daughter of James and possibly, Mary (Unknown) Logan. It is not 100 % sure that James Logan had a wife named Mary but that assumption is based on an entry in the Carter Co., KY Vital Statistics that names Susannah (Logan) Penland's parents as James and Mary Logan. I didn't even think of asking Ruth Ann. I will email her. About Ann Horton Mefford: She was active on several sites a few years ago, but I had missed her reference to the fact that we share g-g-grandparents in Thomas Green and Jemima Brown, which I found in some archives online. Hope somebody recognizes the name! I haven't seen any recent posts. Frankie

dear carter county list, my name is evelyn hunter, and i am a descendant of one of the stamper lines ms. lowe has so diligently researched. carrie stamper justice is my great grandmother, and the research on the carter county website ends with my grandmother and her two siblings. i'm looking for some more distant branches of the gose, justice, and possibly gibson families to help almost complete my mother's side of the family tree. i'd like to talk to ms. lowe about any other information she may have on my ancestors, as well as any information you all on the list may have. thank you for your time, evelyn scharf hunter chicago, il
If anyone can help me locate ANN HORTON MEFFORD, or her family, I would be most delighted! Ann had posted to the GREEN List, back in 2000, that she was a descendant of Thomas GREEN (1820-1896) and Jemima BROWN. She posted further, that she was the granddaughter of James Knox Polk Horton, and daughter of Clyde Rice HORTON. In 2000, she lived near Carter County and spoke of Grayson Lake. I also descend from Thomas GREEN and Jemima BROWN, and am interested in making contact with her, or with some of her family. Perhaps someone on this line can tell me how the GREEN family connects to the HORTON family. Thank you for any leads you can give me! Frankie Perry
Thanks Lydia! Like I said it would have been between 1895 and 1900. I am sure Rebecca Darr (which is my father's grandmother) was quite young when it happened. The Haywood part of my family is my mother's people. Haywood is her maiden name. Thanks again, Mike. Lydia Justice Edwards <[email protected]> wrote:Mike, this is an intriguing story. Regarding the message below: My thanks to Teresa Klaiber for finding this publication for me. Thanks, Pat Fannin "I am trying to locate a publication called "Carter County Historical & Genealogical Society Magazine, Oct., 1996". I am located near Ashland,Ky and have checked the Boyd Co.,Ky Library to no avail. If anyone has information on this, please let me know."
Pat the Boyd Library did have a copy back on the back shelf by the window in Periodicals. It is only one issue and I shelved it under C - I shelved first the state at large mags then alpha by county - it was only about 4 pages and I know that in my collection I have one unauthored article from it. Anyway the complete newsletter was in the library as late as Jan last year - since I left the library I am not sure how well the periodicals are being kept in order. Is the Olive Hill Memorial Cemetery and the Junior O.U.A.M cemetery the same cemetery? I have an older listing on the Junior O.U.A.M, which contains about 350 graves. I just received a small listing of 25 graves, in the Olive Hill Memorial and about half of these were already listed in the Junior O.U.A.M. Don M.

One correction to the previous post: John Harris' 1880 census record shows his birthplace in North Carolina, and both parents born NC. [So it appears that he was born in Wilkes Co., and that Squire & Miriam moved with their family from NC to Russell, VA between 1828 & 1830.] George Harris, son of John & Nancy C. Lark Harris, b. 1857, Carter Co., KY; d. Unk.; m. Julia? [UNKNOWN], b. 1869, KY. George and Julia? [Unk.] Harris had at least these children: [1] William "Willie" Harris, b. 1885, Carter Co., KY [2] Grant Harris, b. 1887, Carter Co., KY [3] Samuel Harris, b. 1889, Carter Co., KY [twin] [4] Virginia "Virgie" Harris, b. 1889, Carter Co., KY [twin] [5] John Harris, b. 1895, Carter Co., KY George may have had other children that were born between the above children, or after 1900, in Carter, KY or in some other place. Anyone who recognizes these Harrises, please contact me. Thanks! Pam [email protected]
Hi, all, We believe Squire Harris, b. 1792, Wilkes Co., NC was the son of William & Sarah [UNKNOWN] Harris [but would very much like to be able to prove it through DNA evidence.] The naming patterns in our Harris lines include repeated Squire Harrises, so we will count this branch of Harrises among our Will & Sarah's descendants until & unless evidence might disprove it. That said, here is what is known of one branch of Squire & Miriam Elizabeth Phillips Harris' descendants [Squire Harris died sometime after June, 1870 & before 1880; Miriam Phillips Harris died sometime after June, 1880; both died in Carter Co., KY. Squire & Miriam E. Phillips Harris had children: [1] Johnson Harris, b. 1821, Wilkes Co., NC; d. aft. 1900, Kandiyohi Co., MN; m. Martha "Mattie" LARK [By 1880, Johnson & Mattie had moved their family to Kandiyohi Co., MN; one son stayed there, two others moved to North Dakota, and one moved to California. I have some of their descendants down through 1930, but not nearly all of them.] [2] Daughter [possibly Margaret who MAY have married Robert McGUIRE?], b. ca. 1823 [3] Sarah Harris, b. 1826; m. [7] Cowan Harris, b. ca. 1870, Carter Co., KY --- Obviously, I have not identified any of the daughter's descendants thus far; I have also been unable to clearly identify & trace two of John & Nancy C. Lark Harris' sons after 1880. They may have remained in Carter Co., or have moved with some of the others to Fayette Co., KY. Does anyone have any marriage records for any of the daughters or these two sons? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
