    3. Another thing to consider is the difference in "illegitimate" and "bastard" in early research. I ran into a problem and found that many times an illegitimate child meant that the father had died before the child was born and there had been a legal marriage between the parents. This seems strange, but it did show up in research I was doing in VA and NC on one of my family lines. A child was called illegitimate, but the parents had been married and the father had died before the child was born. It seems she had moved to be with other family members after the death and some neighbor made scandulous remarks and she filed suit against him and won her case. This was all found in court records. Search those records very carefully they can give you lots of great information. On a trip to Carter Co we were able to find information by going through each page of the court books. It took time, but it was there and we had been told time and again that there was nothing on the man we wanted. Also, remember that if you can't get to Carter Co that many of their records have been microfilmed by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and can be rented from them. I have had great success doing this when I couldn't get to KY. Linda Crawford

    3. Perhaps you ought to be asking for Bastardy Bonds. They are the references in the Court Records where illigitimate children were in need. Often times, the County made welfare contributions to that family. Or sometimes the children were required to be bound out for work to another family to earn their own way. Please know that there is noone at the Court House who will do any research for you. I have been there many times, and the staff there has responsibility to preserve but not research the records. If you access the Carter County, Kentucky Genealogy website, you will find John Grace who is in charge and also you can access professional reserachers. Some charge for their services. Register on this website and place a message in the Query section to see what is best for you. Someone may know more about it than I do. If I were there I would help you, but I am in Idaho. I go there twice a year, but I've no plans to return this year. Good luck. As a suggestion, you may want to use your spell check feature on your computer to achieve standard spelling. Your message is coming through with many misspellings which may confuse readers as to what you really are searching for. Eight other descendants and I have entered a lawsuit against thesurrounding landowner to get a recorded easement to the cemetery, which we are entitled to by law. This owner, and herfather before her, never stopped any cemetery visitors since they purchasedthe land in 1935 until the past several years. Now she hashad her nephew stop visitors even though we have been trying tonegotiate a settlement with her. A year ago, we elected to pursuea settlement through the court. Our next court date isSeptember 1 when we expect a judgment at last. We are not askingfor your financial support. Our lawyer has asked that we build a list of living relatives thathe might use this to demonstrate to the judge that there are manypeople who are interested in the preservation of this cemetery. Bald Bluffis about three acres with over 100 known names of thoseinterred here between about 1850 and 1930. There are thirty-five knownsurnames. We believe that there are nearly two hundred graveswhen we are allowed in a map the area. Even though you maynever have the opportunity to visit Bald Bluff, I know that youdon’t want the owner’s nephew to continue to use the area forjeep racing and fee-based hunting. Over the past forty years, since theowner’s father died, the cemetery has suffered more abuse thannature. The perimeter fence was removed so that cattle couldroam through the cemetery and, of course, they knocked overstones. A road was built around the circumference of thecemetery for the jeep club. In the building of this road, seve! ral tombstones were pulled down and then shoved down the hill. Forthe past four or five years, the nephew has allowed hunters tocome on the land for a fee. When the court rules for us, as I amsure it will, we will rebuild the fence, set up many stones thatare down on the ground, clean brush, and repair the road to thecemetery. Further, we will establish an association to maintainthe cemetery. There are funds available for the cemetery’smaintenance once we clear up the access problem. You can help by providing a list of names that you know of livingrelatives of your ancestor interred in Bald Bluff. Again, weare not asking for your financial support and you will not beparty to the suit. Please include names of living relatives such as you, your children, grandchildren, siblings, parent, nephews, nieces, cousins will all swell the list. Please notify your researchpartners also. I will compile the list and eliminateduplications. We want to demonstrate to the judge that thecemetery matters to many. Your early response will be greatlyappreciated. We will save Bald Bluff Cemetery for future generations.
