I have sent Don Walker an email but haven't heard back from him. We are in different DNA groups (I'm in Group 18) so we probably don't have a Walker connection. After seeing his DNA and the reference to Rachael McCord my interest switched somewhat to the McCord connection, I believe you and I have discussed this previously. Do you know how many of the Carter County Walkers fit into the your DNA group? A project is underway to clean and restore the cemetery where JILES (GILES) GREEN and his wife NANCY CHANDLER are buried, and to place a new stone marking their graves, as the original ones have fallen and are in poor repair. It is the hope of the committee that any other graves there will also be recorded for future marking. This cemetery is located on Rockhouse Fork in Johnson County, Kentucky, just off Kentucky Route 3387, near "Honey Lane". The James Green or Marcus Green Cemetery, where Jiles' second wife Margaret Ghent Yates is buried, is located there, also, on the west side of Route 3387. The Jiles Green Cemetery is on the east side, up on the hill. Both are located on the property of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Conley. The Jiles Green Cemetery is in very poor condition, overgrown, with no fence remaining, and stones fallen or missing. Only one upright stone was located in November 2004. Persons known to be buried there: Jiles (Giles) Green (s/o William Green & Judith Ann Gordon) (ca 1800-1881); Nancy Chandler, wife of Jiles (d/o Thomas Chandler & Amasa Jane) (1798-1845); William Green (s/o Jiles & Nancy Green) (1831-1926); Sarah Yates Green (d/o Joshua Yates & Margaret Ghent), wife of William (1828- 1902); Garfield Green (1873-1875) Suspected to be buried there: Judith Ann Gordon Green, wife of William Green, mother of Giles & Enoch Green; d. 1856 John Green, s/o Giles & Nancy Green Jemima Sparks Green, w/o John Green The size of the cemetery (130' x 65') would seem to indicate many more graves than these. If you know of anyone else buried in this cemetery, or have clues that indicate this as a possible burial site, please contact me. Marlene, Go to http://www.familysearch.org and look under the column heading about Family history Center Library to the point where it says 'find a family history center near you'. Click on that heading and then follow the directions. Gail Marlene Tackett <[email protected]> wrote: Where is LDS libraries? Marlene Tackett
There is an LDS library in Martin, Kentucky. Try an online search. The LDS also have satellite smaller places where you can go in and order what you want, and they will send it to that facility to use. Good Luck. New infromation available: West Virginia has started putting birth, death and marriages online. It might be an address you want to keep. If you find a record, you can pull up an actual copy right there. "You must register to use the free service" http://www.wvculture.org/vrr
Gail, Thank you for the tip regarding the LDS libraries. I didn't think of them. Lorrie
Lorrie, I have not researched School census records for Carter County, but I have researched some for Fayette County. They are available on microfilm through LDS libraries. Carter County ---These records are scattered through out the county court order books as well as the Circuit Court Orders. There are indices for the Circuit records but they are incomplete - I find it better to go page by page for them as well for the time frame you seek. The County court order books are in the deed room on the top shelves above the deeds. Most have been microfilmed and can be viewed at the State Archives. The Circuit Court Order books are in Circuit Court - if you find a file number beside an entry in the Circuit Court Order Indices then you need to go to the Kentucky State Archives and fill out a request form - the original packets are there and they are a gold mine.
