Hello, I am in the middle of planning for a research trip for next week and I have come to a standstill regarding research in Carter County. I have seen in the KyCarter archives a few postings about one in Grayson but I can't seem to get any information about it. Is there a historical association with a physical location or should I plan to do my Carter County research at the Kentucky Historical Society? I appreciate any and all feedback about this. Rochelle
I have just read a reference that says Martillus (Marcellus) Patton was in Carter county in 1880. Does anyone have access to an index and lookup a reference for me? His wife is Susan and they are suppose to have a grandson James L living with them in 1880. I appreciate any help you can give me. Diane

I am researching a family that I found in the 1880 census in Carter Co. The census listing on the heading showed "Cpt#8" and was in ED 18. One of the children in the family, which had emmigrated to Ky from Scotland, was born in a town called Colton or Coaltown. I have been unable to find either in my atlas or through Expedia on the internet. Does anyone know if there is, or was, a town called Colton or Coaltown in Kentucky, probably in Carter County, in the mid-1870's. Thank you.
Dear Carter County List, Just wanted to let you all know, I am back on line with a new E-mail address. ** please note it is a "ONE" after my name and not a lower case - L <derre1@gateway.net> We are living in Spring, Texas. It is wonderful to be stateside again and I am surfing the Net! What a ball I am having .. I do not have to pay Ten Cents a minute to be on line any more! Can you imagine having to limit your searching? The most wonderful part? I am not blocked from sites anymore. I also can E-mail anyone I want without them telling me I can't ... So Sherry Lowe, I can write you again! I still have no idea WHY they blocked your address. Crazy! Someone either sends something rude or had a rude site ... They are a bit touchy about some things .. Parents really did not have to worry about their children logging onto an adult site as they were blocked! That is good! But what ever Rootsweb did, I have no idea. Furniture will be here soon and I am like a kid on Christmas eve. I am so excited and Thrilled to be back in the U.S. of A. What a wonderful country we have and I am so proud to be American. We have so many privileges and we do not recognize them. I miss my horses terribly. I will see them in Oct. when I go back to sell my Stallion. I miss a lot of good friends I have there .. but hey! I AM HOME! I have better Friends and FAMILY! here and I do not have to worry anymore about getting out quickly with just my clothes on my back. It is indeed wonderful to be home! For those that are newbies, I am searching STAMPER, McGLONE, RILEY, SMITH, ORME, DAVIS and GIBBS. Good luck in your searching! JESSE BOWLING who was a son of BENJAMIN BOLLING/BOWLING, 1734-1832, [often referred to as "Flat Gap" Benjamin], the last I had heard, "The Bolling Family Assn." did not recognize descendants on this line as being descendant from Pocahontas, for which they give, what seems to me, rather convincing evidence. As I have not closely followed this debate, I'm wondering if something new has come forth? [not asking for "proof" here, just wondering.] Jim W.
