I have received GEDCOM's from several people over the course of doing the Carter Co page. What I was wondering was if any of you all would be interested in submitting your Carter Co-related GEDCOM's for inclusion in a Carter County GEDCOM CD? Just wond'rin' aloud, let me know, John Rucker Carter Co KYGenWeb coordinator
I have FINALLY updated the cemetery page. I added all the cemeteries that have been submitted over the past few months. If you want to see what the data on the CD looks like, you can check out the Cem page - it's almost exactly the same. You will need to have Acrobat Reader to view the new cemetery format, but I think you'll eventually like the new format better than the old - it's scalable (AND it prints very nicely). Enjoy, John Rucker Carter Co KYGenWeb coordinator
Gosh Bruce, you got me blushing now...vbg. Actually, thank you for your very kind words. I am glad to know that the CD comes across as professionally done. I spent a lot of time getting everything tweaked to run as well as possible. One of the big changes I had to make right at the end was breaking up the index into more managable sections - seems that an index with 4200 names takes quite a while to load even from a local source. I too thought it turned out pretty well for my first attempt at a "published" work... ;-) If anybody out there wants a copy, there's still time (I think) to get it before Christmas. I believe I heard that the last day fro Priority Mail to go out in order to reach its destination by Christmas was Dec.22, but I could be wrong. Anyways, if you want a copy, send check or money order for $13.20 to: John Rucker 4364 Wayne Street Hilliard, Ohio 43026-1075 Be sure to specify Win or Mac. I am know in search of Aaron Lore and Ellen [More] Lore from Carter Co. KY. around 1865 with daughter Cynthia Erion Lore . Cynthia had twins James and John Lore March 22, 1865 in Carter Co. KY. I would like to know if any one has info on Aaron and Ellen Lore.
Who is researching the Wilburn Family of Carter County? Family history says that Pheobe Wilburn married James Williams, my great grandfather. All we can find in the marriage records is a Pheobe O Johnson that married a James Williams. But my dad, James Dudley Williams, should know who his grand mother was, stated that her name was Phoebe Wilburn. Could Phoebe Wilburn have married a Johnson, before she married James Williams? The marriage license shows Pheobe O Johnson. However James Dudley Williams passed away in 1987 and we can not longer call upon him for assistance. Any help will be appreciated, and I will be glad to share the Williams side of the family history. Lois Williams Stewart Green Stewart on the Gold Wing in Ashland KY
This request may not seem like genealogy but my family sang this song and I am trying to find the complete song. Does anyone have the complete song to the following: Picken On Me Oh they're (you) always always picken on me, never never let me be. I'm so lonesome and so sad, been a long time since I've been glad. Tell you what I'll do, and it ain't no joke. I'll swallow a frog and then I'll croak, then you'll be so dog gone sorry you picked on me. Ma says I look like Pa and Pa says I look like Ma. Oh, they're (you) always always picken on me, never never let me be. I'm so lonesome and so sad, been a long time since I've been glad. Tell you what I'll do, and it ain't no joke. I'll swallow a fly and then I'll die, then you'll be so dog gone sorry you picked on me. -- Jesus is Lord of our lives Sherman and Rodana Manis visit our web sites: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/4348 http://www.members.tripod.com/srmanis Sign up to receive gospel tracts via e-mail at: http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/gospeltracts In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Carter and Greenup Researchers, Several researchers from the Rattlesnake Ridge Genealogy Group have compiled a transcribed, annotated and indexed version of the 1870 Carter County, KY Census. I ordered a copy a month ago and I'm pleased to announce a quality publication with lots of tidbits such as marriage dates, maiden names, birth dates, etc. If you're interested in purchasing a copy of the book, send $25.00 (+$3.00 S/H) to: Rattlesnake Ridge Genealogy Group c/o Vicki Gilbert, Tres. 8028 Grahn Road Olive Hill, KY 41164 Thanks, Darrell Smith darrell@pulpgen.com
Folks, I just had an interesting problem pop up. Being an IBM-compatible user, I neglected to consider the Mac users. If you need a Cemetery CD for a Mac, hold off & let me check into it. I'll let you know as soon as I find something out. Thanks (and I'm sorry), John BTW, IBM-compatibles can go ahead & order - I've got y'all covered.
I just sent an email to everyone who showed interest last month in purchasing a Carter Co cemetery CD. We are just about ready to go. I need to enter a few more cemeteries, but a rough count looks like about 75-80 cemeteries on the disk. Proceeds from this will go toward the purchase of a GPS unit for locating and marking all the cemeteries indexed thus far and in the future. Any extra will be donated to the Carter Co Historical & Genealogical Society on behalf of our online "community". The cemeteries will be in Adobe Acrobat format (.pdf). This seems to be the easiest to use. If you don't have a copy of Acrobat Reader on your computer already, don't worry; I will have a copy on the CD for your convenience. Also, at Brian Litteral's suggestion, I will add the Carter Co photo album to the CD. (I think it all will fit...vbg). This will be a wonderful addition to any genealogy library(& also will make a pretty neat gift for all those "un-wired" genealogists out there). The price will be $10 US plus $3.20 for USPS Priority Mail. If you are interested & haven't already contacted me about ordering one, let me know & I'll get you the gory details. BTW, if anyone wants to see how the .pdf format looks, check out the Clay cemetery on the Carter Co page. Thanks, John Rucker Carter Co KYGenWeb coordinator

Sorry to ask this but I've lost an e-mail sent to me -- it had information on cemetrys in Carter County. I found mny of my ancestors in that cemetry and can't figure out how to get back to it. It was in OliveHill -- can anyone help me. This time I'll bookmark it.
Thanks to all. The consensus is Star Furnace as the place where Dr. Logan attended Lydia Wood in her dying moments. Clyde
I am trying to zero in on my gg grandmother LYDIA WOOD. She married JOHN BEAR (or variation thereof) in Carter Co. KY around 1870. She was John's second wife. She died c1879. I have an affidavit concerning her death in which the place of death is hard to read. One researcher has interpretted the place to be Sky Furnace, KY. To me it appears to be s.t.e.e.r. followed by some gobly-goop and KY. The affidavit was filed by Dr. J.M. Logan of Kilgore, KY Carter Co. Has anyone out there ever heard of a SKY FURNACE, KY? How about a STEER (gobly-goop) KY? Is anyone familiar with Dr. J.M. Logan? Is anyone familiar with any WOODs/BEARs living in the Carter/Boyd/Lawrence Co area? Clyde
I plan to travel to Carter County this fall to seek information on my Morgan family who may still live in the county. I am looking for the ancestors of John Valentine, John C, Virginia, Mary, Nathan and David P. Morgan. The family lived on Cabin Creek waterway in the county in the from 1850 through 1860 at least. Can anyone give me advice as to how to best utilize my time in this county.? Derald Morgan

Other counties are contributing toward having the 1900 and 1920 census printed. I have just joined the group in Pike County. Johnson County is trying to do the same thing. Would there be someone willing to take on the responsibility to collect the money and place the order. Most of my dad's people were born in Carter County. Has this been done in book form? It would take about 20 people to pull the price down to $20-$25. I will send the info from what one of the other counties is doing, if someone is interested. I would like to know more about the Kitchens and Sextons, in particular. Robert Kitchen, son of Moses Kitchen, son of Wm. Henry Kitchen, son of John Franklin Kitchen
John, would the CD be compatible with Win98? Also, is there yet a Limestone Cemetery in the southwest part of the county, and would it be included? I believe it a few relatives of mine might be there. Thanks Teola Constance tconsta@kcnet.com
