Well, I've added Households 51-100 for the 1850 census (Thanks Sherry). I've also added about 10 new newspaper articles (Thanks again Sherry...vbg). I listed some more books for sale. Added a few obits to the archives, will be putting them on the Obit Board as well. Other little aesthetic updates done as well - probably won't really notice them, which is the point anyway... heh heh heh. I'm working on standardized extraction forms for birth/death/marriage records, I hope to have something right on the page that a potential submitter can download & fill out & send back. I still have a LOT of stuff to add, but I'm getting there. John
Ok, I'm doing it. I am catching up on all the updates that have been sitting around waiting for me.... funny how they do that ..LOL. Anyway, I have updated the Reunions page (If you know of any Carter Co-related reunions that you'd like to see posted, please give me a shout.) I've added directions to a few new cemeteries & am working on a couple of cemeteries that have been submitted recently. Whoever sent me the data on the Arms Cemetery, please let me know - I lost the original email (still have the scan of the list though) and I want to give the submitter proper credit. Also, I am always looking for more volunteers to index some more of these cemeteries, so go ahead & jump right in... Sherry has finished households #51-100 of the 1950 census & they're gonna be up very soon. I have some abstracts from the 1900 & 1910 census that I'm going to be adding soon. I've already added some from 1920. If you have any census info, I'd love to have it to add too. It looks like the Photo Album is on temporary hiatus; I just sent Brian an email, so should have some word soon. Brian, you out there? In the meantime, if you want to see pics added, you can send them to me & I'll try to follow Brian's excellent lead. I also added a button to the front page that brings up a .pdf document for subscribing to the Grayson or Olive Hill newspaper. I have a bunch more old newspaper articles from Sherry (thanks a million, Sherry, don't know where we'd be without you) Lowe. Those should be up fairly soon. I also plan to add a list of Carter Co newspaper microfilm available from UK to the newspaper site so that people can order it directly from them. I have a few vital records to add - I am trying to develop a common format for submitting these records (i.e., abstracting death certificates, birth certificates, marriage licenses, etc) & would welcome any suggestions. Additionally, I have a list of Carter Co-related microfilms available from Frankfort that I am currently transcribing. That should be up early next week (After tax day, that is <VBG>) In the archives, I've linked a LOT of past Elliott Co News articles that pertain to area deaths of Carter Co people. My eventual goal is to get most of the records on the main site also added to the Archive site. As always, I welcome any and all comments & suggestions on how to improve the site both aesthetically & content-wise. I am also always open to any kind of data submissions. If anyone wants to submit their GEDCOMS, go ahead & I'll get a site set up for them (some kind of FTP server or something). That's about it for now. If you have any questions/comments/suggestions, feel free to holler - I'm here, just a little slow sometimes.... Happy hunting, John Rucker Carter Co KYGenWeb coordinator

Attn: Shirley, We have Nolens: Stephen son of William and Mary Ann Cockrell. Stephen md Nancy Reynolds 22 Jan 1820 in Floyd Co, KY. Their first child was William who married Malinda Henderson 27 Sep 1845 presumably in Carter Co. All the children were born in Floyd until Solomon in 1843 who was born in Lewis. Two sons and a daughter I have no names for only a place in the family held by the earlier census record. I would be most happy to share all that I have on this family back to Pierce Noland from Ireland via snail mail. There is a book by Edward J. Ronsheim Sr. It leaves some at loose ends. However, he does a pretty good job of documenting most of it. There is also a lot of names that he has listed with little or no connection of Nolen/Nolands in the areas of documented ones that would leave one to believe there may be a family connection. It seems to be all we have to help us along the way so I am most grateful for the record he has made for us. There is a film in the Salt Lake genealogy library of this book and can be ordered from any LDS Regional library for using in the library for about $3 for two or three weeks. There was another book on Peirce Noland and descendants but I did not find it until I near ready to leave, so only had time to copy a few pages that did not give the name of the author. I have been sorry ever since that I did not take the time to copy the whole thing. So, for what ever it is worth, I will be happy to share with you. 'Borrowed' from another list. My 'favorite' is JOHN - "WHERE THE *)%@& DID YOU COME FROM AND WHERE DID YOU GO, GGGGgrand JOHN?" ============= THE TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR NAMES: (1). Thou shalt name your male children: James, John, Joseph, Josiah, Abel, Richard, Thomas, William (2) Thou shalt name your female children: Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Maria, Sarah, Ida, Virginia, May (3) Thou shalt leave NO trace of your female children. (4) Thou shalt, after naming your children from the above lists, call them by strange nicknames such as: Ike, Eli, Polly, Dolly, Sukey.---making them difficult to trace. (5) Thou shalt NOT use any middle names on any legal documents or census reports, and only where necessary, you may use only initials on legal documents. (6)Thou shalt learn to sign all documents illegibly so that your surname can be spelled, or misspelled, in various ways: Hicks, Hicks, Hix, Hixe, Hucks, Kicks (7) Thou shalt, after no more then 3 generations, make sure that all family records are lost, misplaced, burned in a court house fire, or buried so that NO future trace of them can be found. (8) Thou shalt propagate misleading legends, rumors, & vague innuendo regarding your place origination (A) you may have come from : England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales....or Iran. (B) you may have American Indian ancestry of the______tribe...... (C) You may have descended from one of three brothers that came over from______ (9) Thou shalt leave NO cemetery records, or headstones with legible names. (10) Thou shalt leave NO family Bible with records of birth, marriages, or deaths. (11) Thou shalt ALWAYS flip thy name around. If born James Albert, thou must make all the rest of thy records in the names of Albert, AJ, JA, AL, Bert, Bart, or Alfred. (12) Thou must also flip thy parent's names when making reference to them, although "Unknown" or a blank line is an acceptable alternative. And my own personal addition: Thou shalt name at least 5 generations of males, and dozens of their cousins with identical names in order to totally confuse researchers. And don't forget to change you surname all together. 'Now I dare them to find me.'
The Carter Co. web page is lucky enough to have a self-submit obituary format, but it hasn't been used by most of you. If there's one thing that every genealogist collects, it's obituaries. Why, because they are a great tool for our research. Why not dig out a few of those dusty obits and submit them to the page to share and preserve your older obits. It won't take ten minutes and you'll be contributing instead of just gleaning. You may be surprised at how many contacts you receive from these postings. But remember to read the submittal guidelines and no queries please. Please place all queries on the Query Page! Just click on the following address and make a contribution! http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/CarterObits

I am looking for the parents of John MORGAN who may have been born in VA or KY. He may have been born in Lexington as this is what his obituary states except that in the census when he was 14 his mother or grandmother Mary states he was born in VA. He was born in December of 1845 and lived in Mason Cnty, KY in 1850 and later lived his life in Adams Cnty, OH on Johnson Run Blue Creek area. I need any help I can get as I have not found a viable lead for 30 years. Derald Morgan
Who are the parents of these Nolens in eastern Kentucky? Looking to tie up some loose ends - well, actually, quite a few loose ends. Greenup County Kentucky I have not seen the actual record for this birth but it is my understanding that it does exist. James Nolen - born July 16, 1853 Greenup Co. Ky. Parents: Moses Nolen and Sarah Stumbo (Stumbough) Does anyone know who Moses Nolen might belong to? Carter County Kentucky I have not seen the actual record for this marriage - I hope it does exist. Moses Nolen married Artemisy Welch on August 15, 1859. Artemisy Welch Nolen is listed on the 1860 Carter Co. census but there is no Moses with her. She is also on the Carter Co. Tax list in 1860 and 1862. Might this Moses Nolen be the same Moses Nolen that was married to Sarah Stumbo in Greenup Co. Ky.? Lawrence County Kentucky Jackson Oxier (Auxier) married Nancy Nolin on June 24, 1841 Does anyone know who Nancy Nolin might belong to? This family is listed on the 1850 Lawrence Co. Ky. census. Jackson Auxier 32 born in Ky. Nancy Auxier 31 born in Ky. Elsy Auxier (M) 14 born in Ky. John Auxier 7 born in Ky. James Rose 14 born in Ky. Carter County Kentucky Cemetery Records James Richard Nolen born March 10, 1833 died 1887 buried in the Nolen cemetery. Does anyone know who his parents were? Union Army - 14th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry - Organized in October of 1861 at Louisa in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Men from Lawrence, Johnson, Floyd, and Pike Counties. Company B Richard Nolen Company F James Minnix Lewis Minnix William Minnix Company H James R. Noland Leonard Noland James M. Thornbury Levi Thornbury Walter Thornbury Company I Noah Minix Charles W. Minix Anyone out there researching any of these lines? All of these families at one time or another have married into a Nolen/Noland family - trying to get some of them connected. This is conjecture on my part but I believe that these Nolens are grandsons of William Noland and Mary Ann Cockrell of Fairfield South Carolina who moved into Russell County Virginia around 1796-1797 and then into Floyd County Kentucky around 1815 or thereabouts. Any help, suggestions, ideas, or divine inspiration from on high will be most welcomed. At this point in time I'll take anything I can get - and I have more unconnected Nolands waiting in the wings when I get these lined out. Shirley J. Reynolds Liberty County Texas
The following article from Grayson's "E. Ky. Journal", ran in the "Ashland Daily Independent" on July 2, 1922: LARGE STILL IS CAPTURED Aged Woman Disclaims Knowledge of It Last week Sheriff W. A. Burchett and Deputy Sheriff Ed Ratcliff made a raid on Davy's Run in the southern section of the county, and brought in the biggest still that has been taken in this section beyond the recollection of the oldest inhabitant. It is of copper and of sixty gallons capacity. The worm taken along with it is a large one and is also of copper. The implements from which the fire water was made was found at the home of Aunt Ellen Adkins, who is 89 years old. The still was found in her kitchen under a table draped on all four sides. The aged lady disclaimed any knowledge of it being in the house. The woman along with James Adkins and John Chafens, were brought to Grayson and appeared before County Judge Andrew Kiser. The men were placed under bond for their appearance at Carter Circuit Court, while the old lady was recognized as a witness.

Hello, I tried to get a interlibrary loan from Boyd County Library and could not - can someone help me, if they are in the library? I'm looking for a article named "The Big Contractors" dated about 1957 . The article is about my brother Johnny Withrow trying to make a few bucks. I'm trying to do something special for his birthday and am trying to get a copy of that article. Thanks Betty
I have received a request for a picture of the "Lower Trough Camp School" located in the southern part of Carter Co., from a lady in NY. She's trying to put together a history for her mother's birthday. I've searched through everything and can't find a picture of this school. Can anyone help? Please! Sherry J. Lowe
