Hi all, Does anyone know where the waterway or road, Shuff Branch would be located in Carter Co.? Would anyone happen to know how this "creek" or "road" got the name Shuff? Thanks! Lorna researching anything "Shuff"
I have just located the marriage bond for my granduncle, James Bradshaw(23) and Lucy Clark( no age given). Both were residing in Carter County, Kentucky at the time of the Bond. Clark H. Bradshaw, his brother served as surety for the bond. The marriage took place at George COLLEY's February 2 1883, and the witnesses were John Christian and George Colley. The service was performed by Jerry Collins. I am assuming this took place at a private residence. I have found people's names instead of churches in two other marriage bonds. I don't know if this indicates they weren't particularly religious, or if there wasn't a local church of their affiliation available. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I just found a marriage bond for my grandaunt, Minnia Bradshaw. The bond is between C. W. Keuper(was not literate, so the spelling may be inaccurate) and R. R. Bradsahaw. The bond is dated June 23, 1891.C. W. Keuper was a farmer and 21 years old. Minnia was 18. C. W. was from Owen County, KY and Minna was just listed Kentucky. From previous research, she was either born in Carter or Lewis County, Ky. The marriage was performed at C. M. Lee's as best as I can tell. If you have any information concerning these people, I would certaninly appreciate your help. Thanks in advance for your for your time and attention. Pat Muniz
Since Carter Co. is a neighboring county to Rowan and many of the cemeteries lie near the county line, I thought this announcement might be of interest to this list. The Rowan County, KY Historical Society is in its final stages of surveying nearly 300 cemeteries in our county. Publication is next with a possible 3-volume set of books or a CD in the works. Every cemetery will be listed along with specific directions in finding each. For most, a picture will be included as well as the GPS (Global Position) location along with the names of the surveyors. A special feature will be an all-name index to locate specific burials. Right now a list is being compiled for those wishing to place an order for either the book set or CD. No prices have been set yet so the order list is tentative until further details are described. For more information contact me or the historical society. Address: Rowan County Historical Society P.O. Box 60 Morehead, KY 40351 Thanks, Betty Sharp

I have a good bit of information on these lines and am always looking to fill in more of my blanks. The CONNS were originally out of Scott County, VA and moved into Morgan County, KY and branched out from there. The KEGLEYS were originally from Wythe County, VA and the HELDERBRANDS (spelled HILDEBRAND, HILTIBRAND, HELTERBRAND, HILDERBRAND, and many other ways and often with a 'T' on the end) originally came from PA through Adams County, Ohio perhaps? Any and all information is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Dianna Gilliam justpeachy@greenhills.net
Hi, Am looking for information about ancestors of Scott Roberts, late of Carter co. and his wife, Dorsey. (granny is still living at 101!) Any information you can provide will be appreciated!!
IN HONOR OF GRANDPARENT'S DAY: My paternal grandparents were Andrew Jackson Ball and Lenah Sofronie Isom. They both died before I was born so I never knew them personally but I enjoy doing research to learn more about them. Andrew Jackson Ball was born on August 10, 1886 in Pike county, Kentucky to John C Ball and Margaret "Betty" Jane (Blackburn) Ball. He was the oldest of 11 children. He had 5 brothers: Thomas, Frelan, Basil, Landon and Charles and 2 sisters: Nancy and Mary. He had 3 other siblings who died when young that I have not yet identified. Andrew was often called "A.J." or "Bud" by his family. When he was a teenager his father moved from the Pond Creek area of Pike County to Northfork in McDowell county, West Virginia. Around 1910 the family moved to Matewan in Mingo County, West Virginia and he started working in the coal mines there. Lena Sofronie Isom was born January 25, 1895 in Leon, Carter county, Kentucky to Melvin C Ison and Elizabeth "Eliza" Lyons. She was their only daughter. She had 9 brothers: Charles, Jerry, Bayless, George, Isom, Martin, Lee Roy, Robert Luther, and James. Lena was called "Fronie" or "Frone" by her family. I have not yet figured out how Fronie and A.J. met but I do know that both of their fathers were timbermen and used huge saws. I have also found out that some of Fronie's brothers were coal miners at Red Jacket #6 in Mingo County, West Virginia. It is possible that the families worked together. "Bud" and Fronie were married on September 27, 1913 in Matewan, Mingo County, West Virginia. They had 2 sons: Alfred and Lee Roy and 1 daughter: Hazel. Alfred and Hazel are still living. Fronie died on February 3, 1918 in Matewan, Mingo county, West Virginia of heart disease shortly after giving birth to Lee Roy (my father). Her father, Melvin Ison, died later that same year on July 14th in a sawmill accident. She and her father were buried in the Ison/Isom family cemetery in Fultz, Carter county, Kentucky. After Fronie's death, A.J. moved back in with his parents who helped him with the children. Fronie's mother and brothers appear in the 1920 census in Mingo County so they must have moved there sometime after the 1910 census. An older lady once told my dad that his grandma (Eliza) helped his mother (Fronie) when she was very sick and couldn't get out of bed to care for her own children. Perhaps that is when the Ison family moved to Matewan. Toward the end of 1920, John C Ball moved his family to Beckley in Raleigh County, West Virginia. A.J. and his children moved with him. Eliza Ison and her sons did not go to Raleigh County but at some point did return to the Fultz area of Carter county, Kentucky. A.J. was a coal miner. He broke his back while working in a coal mine at Skelton in Raleigh county, West Virginia. After that he was forced to retire and required a cane when walking. He considered the coal mines very dangerous and did not want his sons to work there. Against the wishes of his father, Lee Roy, convinced one of A.J.'s brothers to help him get a mining job. Although he never had any serious accidents in the coal mines, Lee died of black lung contracted from breathing the coal dust. A.J. died on January 6, 1948 near Beckley in Raleigh county, West Virginia of cancer. A.J. never spoke much about his wife or her family. Perhaps it was too painful for him. All my father ever knew was that his mother, Fronie Isom, died when he was a month and 3 days old and that she was buried in Carter County, Kentucky. He searched for her grave many times during his life but was never successful at finding it. Six months after his death, I found her grave and put some flowers and a note on it. Shortly thereafter I was contacted by some of her nephews. That summer, my family met some of my father's first-cousins that he never knew ! -- Submitted by Debbie Ullom, granddaughter of A.J. and Fronie (Isom) Ball on September 11, 2000.

Mary decends from Levi and Parthenia "Thaney" SUTHERLAND .. son James M. also lived in Carter and I decend through him .. trying to find his siblings and decendants .. Changed spelling of SUTHERLAND to SOUTHERLAND ... in KY .. Hello, Derre. Although it deals with a subject, ex-slaves, that neither of us should be proud of, you need to take a look at one of my documents. It mentions John WATSON and his son, Rolla, and takes the form of a Kentucky Court of Appeals case where a Dick WATSON is attempting to prove his heirship to an ex-slave of my gg-grandfather in order to inherit land. It documents travel from Perry County, KY to Carter County, KY, and Virginia. Go to my personal webpage, URL below, and click on Favorite Links then, in the left column, click on Walker Family Resources. This will take you to another webpage where you will click on Table of Contents and then on Misc. Click on the file named aawalkers.htm to read the document or aawalkers.rtf to download it. Good luck. The only MESSER family info I have is what I gleaned from Civil War pension papers of my gr grandfather, Jesse CONN of Carter, County KY. He had apparently married Eliza Jane MESSER in the spring of 1865 and she died sometime in 1869. The marriage seems to be close to the date he was mustered out of the Army. There is no reference given to there being any children. This affidavit was given by Josiah CONN (his cousin) and a Polly Ann MESSER who was 54 and lived in Wesleyville, Carter County, KY as of May 18, 1888, the date of the affidavit. This was a surprise to us as no one had been aware that he had been married before he married our gr gr grandmother and I hadn't yet gotten around to pursing it any further. Hope this may be of some help. I recently order the index of marriage records from the local FHC. I found a James Bradshaw marriage record to Lucy Clark 2/1/1883 in the index. There is another film that has other information I can order. What other information is in the second film for this time period? At this point, I can't say for sure that this is my James Bradshaw. Thanks for your time and attention. Regards, Pat Muniz Researching AMOS, ANGEL, BRADSHAW, BRYANT, HOWARD, SNYDER, UTTERBACK/OTTERBACH

I am interested in the William Nolen who served in the Revolutionary War and is going to have the dedication on Set 23, 2000 at the Nolen Cemetery outside Grayson in Carter Co, KY. Is there any more info on who he was and his descendants? Thanks Thelma
I received a note from a Noland researcher that a DAR Marker Dedication for William Noland, RW Soldier, has been set for September 23, 2000 at 1:00 pm at the Nolen Cemetery outside of Grayson there in Carter County. I haven't seen anything posted about this yet but I know that there are some that are planning to attend this dedication. For those of us that are descendants but are not able to attend - is there anyone out there who would be willing to videotape the dedication, the cemetery, and those Noland descendants that are able to be there? There are plenty of Noland researchers I know that would be more than happy to help cover the cost of making copies of a video tape. And a special thanks to Don Karr and Delores Sarpas for being instrumental in seeing that this Revolutionary War Soldier will finally receive his marker and the recognition from his descendants he so richly deserves. I recieved this in response about my inquiry about Star Furnace Hi Earl, Star Furnace is an area located between Grayson and Rush in Carter Co. Of course, there was a furnace located there. Star is still a community today. In fact, Star Elementary School is an integral part of the Carter County Education System. Samuel P. Williams was named Postmaster of Star Furnace on 24 Jan 1848. Other Post Masters were Robert W. Lampton and Samuel McCullough. The Star Post Office was discontinued 18 May 1868. Sherry J. Hello List, My grandfather Andrew Jackson Gray was born May 28, 1878 at Star Furnace, KY. I also would like information about this town. I believe that it was located near Olive Hill and many people lived and worked near the furnace in the late 1800's. Are there any records ANYWHERE with employees or company information about this furnace? Thanks, Linda
