    3. I originally responded to a query about the location of the cemetery that the cemetery was thought to be destroyed, but with further inquiries it turned out the cemetery is still there, on Lot 10 of a new subdivision that going there. I never meant to imply that the cemetery was endangered -- no more than any other farm cemetery, anyway. There is already a house built and occupied on Lot 10 -- the lot where the Barrett Cemetery is. The person who originally inquired about the cemetery has been offered the opportunity to visit it by the real estate agents. There was quite a fuss and legal wranglings here about seven years ago when someone bulldozed a Hanks cemetery on Dividing Ridge Road, it got a lot of attention and I don't think anyone wants to repeat the process. 3. If this is a family cemetery, there may be clause in the originating deed, when this family sold the property, that excludes the cemetery from the sale. If so, then the family should still own the cemetery. Barbara On 6/17/05, Bill Davis <wmadavis@iglou.com> wrote: > > Just a followup on the Barrett Cemetery. 3. Just a followup on the Barrett Cemetery. I posted before that it was probably obliterated. I took Kathryn Salyers out to the farm, which is now being developed as the Butler Woods subdivision, we took information from one of the real estate signs and sent it to Robert Brock, who is interested in the cemetery. He has made some calls and has been told that the cemetery has not been destroyed, at least not completely, and that it is located on lot 10 of this map: http://www.countrytyme.com/kentucky/inventory/butler.html Bill Davis -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. I called Kathryn Salyers in Carrollton and she says the cemetery is obliterated, so far as she knows. She said the old Barrett house was a fine house that stood in a farm northwest of the junction of Four Mile Road and Rt. 36. It is probably the house that appears as the Frank Bond residence on the 1883 map. She says the Barretts, Magruders, and Bonds were all related. She says the house was torn down by a Mr. Cook of the Kentuckiana Tobacco Warehouse and replaced with a modest two-story frame house, and that the walnut stair from the old house was used in the smaller house that replaced it. Cook's daughter married a man named Clinkscale and they were living in the house when Kathryn visited it and took the names out of the cemetery. They had a daughter who had a pony, and they were using the inclosure of the cemetery to keep the horse in. She said the cemetery was a short distance from the front (or south side) of the Clinkscale house that was there when she visited it, which was probably in the 60's or 70's. She says the house she visited has also been torn down, and that a new development is just going into that corner. There is at least one new house that has been built there, but it is not in the same location as the old one. Bill Davis -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Meredith ========================================= Meredith Thompson mere@augustmoondesign.com alternate e-mail: mere_thom@runbox.com Indiana Genealogical Society Newsletter editor & website manager http://www.indgensoc.org ========================================= Midwestern Roots 2005: Family History and Genealogy Conference Indianapolis - Some of the nation's leading genealogy professionals will present at Midwestern Roots 2005: Family History and Genealogy Conference, August 18-20 in Indianapolis. Midwestern Roots, co-sponsored by the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Genealogical Society, will feature over 30 presentations covering topics ranging from finding female ancestors, census substitutes, family food traditions and German SS records to baptismal records, preserving family papers, genetics and more. Optional pre-conference activities on Thursday, August 18, range from tours of the William Henry Smith Memorial Library, the Indiana State Library and the Indiana State Archives to writing workshops on preparing family histories for publication, computer labs on genealogy resources available on the internet and a workshop designed for library staff and volunteers who answer questions from genealogy patrons. The Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library and the Indiana History Center Smith Library also will stay open late for extended research hours. Other activities include a lively panel discussion bringing together genealogists and historians to answer the question, "History and Genealogy: Why Not Both?" The evening will begin with a dessert reception at the Indiana History Center followed by a discussion with nationally-renowned historical genealogists Elizabeth Shown Mills and Curt B. Witcher, Indiana historian James H. Madison and migration historian Marianne S. Wokeck, who will explore how these fields can enrich each other, from uncovering the slightest detail of one life to seeing human history more clearly because of that life. On Friday, August 19, the conference will begin with the opening session by Mills. Mills will explain the standards and processes all researchers need to apply when using family history and genealogical sources. Friday will conclude with a banquet and Mills will give a presentation that encourages taking what is learned about ancestors and conveying it to descendants. On Saturday morning, Madison will begin the day by considering the various migration streams that settled the Midwest and show how their origins, timing and cultural features helped make the region a distinctive part of the nation. Other notable national speakers include genealogists John S. Humphrey, Diane Gagel, Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, Tony Burroughs and Kandie Adkinson. The Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Genealogical Society will offer six scholarships for individuals to attend the conference. The scholarship application can be found at www.indianahistory.org/midwesternroots. Additional conference information, registration forms and exhibitor information can be found at www.indianahistory.org/midwesternroots or by calling (317) 232-1882. Hotel reservations can be made by calling the Indianapolis Marriott East at (317) 352-1231 or (800) 228-9290. Indicate association with Midwestern Roots 2005 upon making reservations to receive the special $92/night room rate. Room reservations must be made by August 1. 3. Hi everyone, I am looking for a Charles Howard or Edward Barrett born supposedly in Kentucky in 1885. This is my husband's grandfather. Here is what I know. He was in and out of prisons in Washington, Oregon and California from 1908 to 1928. He also used 6 names that I know of. In 1908 he was convicted of forgery in Pendleton Oregon, and was sent to Oregon State Penitentiary as Edward Barrett. When he married my husband's grandmother in Oregon in 1915 he was Charles Howard. They were divorced in 1916. He had stolen her father's horse, sold it as his own and taken off. His prison records are consistent, he was born in Kentucky in 1885. Family lore says he went back to Carrollton. So somehow I have to find a family with a Charles or Edward born in Kentucky 1885, that went to Oregon. So far no luck. I'd like to know about Carroll county in 1885. Were people moving in or out of the area? How did most people earn a living? Was anything interesting happening around this time in Carroll county? And of course if you have a Charles or Edward, Howards or Barretts in your line I'd love to talk with you. Thank you! Ronda Howard

    3. The Property Valuation Administrator at the courthouse keeps track of the current owners of properties in the county. He has maps with sections marked out on them, and each section is marked with a number that refers to records in filing cabinets there -- those give the names and mailing addresses of the current owner. Usually it will also have a reference to the most-recent deed, so that's where you would start tracing the title back if you ever had a mind to do that.
