Yes, I still have some genealogy research to do in Carroll County. My great grandfather, James McDonald, and my great grandmother, Sarah (Herron) McDonald, are first recorded in the county in the 1880 census. At that time they had had 9 of their 11 children. I have been told they were married in 1865, but I don't know where. The federal veteran pension records show that James fought in the Civil War in the 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, so he was probably in Kentucky that whole time, but I don't know where. Plus, he fought in the Mexican War in 1846-1848 - maybe he was in Kentucky then also. I don't know, but he was born in Ireland in 1814. Any leads would be appreciated, as would any photos of the 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. The Carrollton newspapers were largely wiped out by the '37 flood. I think it was losses such as these that helped inspire the subsequent microfilming. Losses in Carrollton depended on which book of old papers were above and below the water line. Some years ago a fellow named Allan Watts indexed vital data out of some surviving newspapers. I have a book which indexes 1884. 1885, 1889, 1890, 1894, 1895, and 1898. He also indexed a short lived GHENT TIMES from 1899-1901. Watts did not have access to two years that have only been microfilmed recently, which I believe were 1883 and 1878. The only Mary Baker that I see in Ghent Cemetery died in 1890, and she is not mentioned in these indexes. CLEVELAND GEORGE ANN 1848 1883 4 10 1 BAKER MARY 1824 1890 4 10 3 BRUCE MARY 1852 1903 4 10 5 STAFFORD MATTIE 4 10 6 STAFFORD JASPER 4 10 7 MASTERSON PEARL 1868 1902 4 10 13 ELLIS JAMES 1818 1894 4 10 14 ELLIS JULIA 1819 1882 4 10 15 ELLIS LILY 1885 1887 4 10 16 ELLIS H.B. 1840 1867 4 10 17 The Warsaw Independent in Warsaw, Gallatin County, Kentucky picked up news items from Carroll County, including some obituaries, so you could look there. The closer the decedent was to Gallatin County, the better chance you have of finding a mention. Ghent is close to the Gallatin County line. Across the river from Ghent is Vevay, and they have old newspapers online here: http://www.switzerland.k12.in.us/hs_vevaynewspapers.php And you might even find a mention down the river in newspapers from Madison, Indiana. The Madison newspaper covers Carroll County news even to the present day. Hi Betty, If you find those newspapers, please let me know. I am searching for mid to late 1880's Carroll County newspapers. I hope to find news of Howards or Barretts. I talked to Kathryn Salyers, Carroll County's history expert, and she says that the old Poor House and the County Infirmary were the same thing. No "County Infirmary" at the foot of Gap Hill. Maybe I saw a reference to the Infirmary "at Gap Hill" or maybe I didn't, but either way it was referring to the Poor House. There is a monument on the site of the Poor House that names some of the people who are supposed to be buried there. I can recall the house, I think it was torn down about 15-20 years ago. Bill Davis The current County Park has a monument marking the site of the old Poor House, including names of a few that are supposed to be buried there. The monument is at 38.669694 -85.131148 according to Google Earth. "The County Poor House" appears there on the 1883 map. I seem to recall there was something called the County Infirmary nearby, at the foot of Gap Hill, where the old city cemetery is. The cemetery is at 38.674993 -85.146651. Indigents were buried there and I assume unclaimed deaths from the infirmary would be in the city cemetery as well. I had a call from John English, who lives in Louisville. He was interested in the English family that the town of English in Carroll County was named for. Rennick's Kentucky Place Names indicates that the town was named for James Wharton English, who married a Demint and is buried in the neglected Demint Cemetery on Green Bottom Road in Carroll County. John English says that James Wharton English was the son of Elijah English and Sarah Wharton, who settled near Bedford and had 14 children, including his ancestor Samuel, and John B. English, the ancestor of a lady in Hawaii he had been corresponding with. If anyone on the list has an interest in the English family you might contact johnenglish@insightbb.com. He also has an interest in the condition of the Demint Cemetery. Bill Davis

Kathryn is greatly improved in the last week or so. She can move her wheelchair around the corridors of Green Valley in Carrollton, and has improved quite a bit in her ability to communicate. It is still very difficult for her to talk, but when she concentrates and the listener is patient she can often convey what she wants to say. She is getting both speech and physical therapy, and has been doing some walking around with a walker.
