    1. [KYCARROL] KYGENWEB Project
    2. The KYGenWeb Project is very proud to announce the latest addition to our "Special Collections" of research references for those with Kentucky roots, the Kentucky Vital Records Project. (http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kvrp) What began as a "dream" of 3 of us involved with the KYGenWeb Project and the KYGenWeb Archives, a centralized collection of Kentucky birth, marriage and death records, is now available in the first stages for Kentucky researchers. Currently, the browsable index lists all of the deaths in the KY Death Index (1911-1999). We are in the process of adding digital images and transcriptions of actual death certificates. These digital images and transcriptions will be linked to the browsable index as they are added to the collection. Records for this project will be a combination of researcher-contributed records and a coordinated extraction program so we can get them up as quickly as possible. We will begin adding birth records about 15 April 2004 and marriage records about 1 June 2004. As these records are added, they will also be linked to the index. (NOTE: Birth records will only be added for persons born before the year 1854, unless proof of death is provided. We want to ensure that the privacy and safety of living individuals is not compromised.) The browsable index will be a great help to KY researchers by itself, as you'll be able to search for those "creative" spellings that all of us have been blessed (or cursed) with. Tens of thousands of corrections have already been made to the original index. Corrections from site visitors are encouraged. As corrected or additional information is received on any of the records, it will be incorporated into the index for the benefit of future site visitors. In addition to the browsable index, be sure to check out the site search engine, as it will pick up additional information in the transcriptions (most importantly, parents' and spouse's names, if given). We invite everyone to stop in and check out this newest addition. Our hope is that you'll find some "treasures" here and that you'll then share your collections so that others can find theirs too. Feel free to forward this message to other mail lists.

    1. [KYCARROL] Carroll County KY Marriage Records
    2. Bill Davis
    3. --=======31A95CCD======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-B5F5C7E; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit This is an updated version of information about Carroll County Marriage Records that I send when I receive a marriage-related inquiry: --------------------- Carroll County Marriage FAQ -------------------------- My online gedcom is devoted to Carroll County, Kentucky families and history. Margaret Samland copied the Carroll County marriage index, 1838 - 1938, shared it with me and I was able to convert it into a gedcom and intergrated it into my genealogy program before I ever had any thought of putting the information online. Thousands of entries in my data consist solely of references to a marriage, unconnected to either parents or children. Because of the same person's name appearing in different sources, it is common for the same person to appear more than once. Grooms who remarried in the county will appear as separate individuals in my data. Brides who remarried usually appear again under the surname of their previous husband. If you go back and search from the website where my gedcom is: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=wmadavis Entries derived from the marriage index will show the book and page number at the bottom of the page. "5-047" would mean Book 5, page 47. "5-047C" would mean it was indexed as a "colored" marriage. If you send them the book and page reference, the Carroll County Clerk promises to send out within three days a copy of the page from the marriage books, some of which were recopied after being damaged in the 1937 Floods ( I believe the damaged originals can be viewed on microfilm at the Carroll County Public Library; the recopied records give references to the original book and page numbers). I don't know if it makes any difference, but you should probably tell them if it was a "colored" marriage; they may not recognize the ending-with-C as meaning a "colored" marriage, because that was my indexing convention, not theirs. There is no guarantee about what information will be there, but typically it may give the wedding date, the ages, residence, where born, occupation, marital status and parents' names. Sometimes there is very little additional information. In some periods extensive family information was recorded. The cost for a photocopy is only $0.25 per page, and marriage book entries are single-page entries. You could send them a check for whichever copy you want, adding the amount of postage. If you send a stamped self-addressed envelope you wouldn't need to add the postage to the check. If you want a copy that's certified, they charge $5.00. The address is: Carroll County Clerk 440 Main Street Carrollton, KY 41008-1099 Telephone: (502) 732-7005 You can also call them and ask them to read the record to you, but sometimes they don't read all the relevant data from the record without a lot of prompting. If you are looking for a marriage in Carroll County between 1838 and 1850, you might find the full date in one of these two online files: For Groom's surnames between A and L: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/carroll/vitals/marr/A-L.txt For Groom's surnames between M and Z: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/carroll/vitals/marr/M-Z.txt My GEDCOM is posted for sharing and gathering information on any Carroll County, Kentucky family. It doesn't just represent my personal genealogy. Feel free to use the Post-It fuction to add additional notes, queries, comments, and corrections to my on-line gedcom. You can add your name and address and e-mail address as a contact person interested in this entry, if you like. I do try to work additions into the regular gedcom, but I've gotten behind in making these additions. ------------------ end --------------------- --=======31A95CCD=======--

    1. [KYCARROL] Sharon Baptist Church Records, Carroll County, KY
    2. Bill Davis
    3. I have been amazed to discover that the records of Sharon Baptist Church, a Carroll County church that has been defunct for about 140 years, have turned up in a Southern Baptist Archive in Nashville, Tennessee. This church was located on Sharon Road in what is now Carroll County, and was made up largely of members who had transferred from the Ghent Baptist Church. It was part of Gallatin County when the church was first formed. These records should through a little light on a controversy involving Rev. John Scott, who was also prominent in Owen County. It had something to do with the status of a previous marriage of Scott's second wife, Mary Bailey Whitehead Waller, and whether she was properly divorced from her former husband, Samuel Waller. The microfilm of the records costs $10.00 plus P & H, and can be ordered at this site, under "Kentucky" and "Gallatin County:" http://sbhla.org/churchrecords.asp Bill Davis Bill Davis wmadavis@iglou.com

    2. Hi Everyone, I finally had a break this week and received the death certificate of Magruder Martin, my gg-grandfather. Born May 31, 1850, Decatur Co., Indiana, died June 22, 1925 Dover, Mason Co., Kentucky. Son of Moses Martin and Susanna Martin. He lived most of his life in Carroll Co., KY. My question, is there a book or written list of names for the cemeteries in Carroll Co.? His wife Nancy Catherine Wilson Martin is buried at Gap Hill according to her death certificate, but is Magruder buried there too? Thanks for any help. Jan Loomer

    1. [KYCARROL] Brinley Family
    2. In looking at the Brinley families in the 1929 KY census in preparation for the Brinley family reunion in Louisville next week, I came across several Brinley families in Carroll County. There was a Frank L. Brinley, 45, and his family consisting of his wife and four children and his brother Scott, 44. There was John W. Brinley 46, and his family. It would appear that these Brinley's are all brothers. I would like to contact anyone from these families and also, to invite them to the reunion in Louisville, July 25, 26 and 27. We are doing DNA testing in order to determine the relationships between the various Brinley families. I am looking forward to hearing from someone related to these families. 2. James Coleman
    3. Some of you folks have made a mistake on the Casey Co., Ky. Daniel Coleman & the Henry Co., Ky. Daniel Coleman. You MIGHT want to change your Coleman file and correct your books that have been published. Daniel Coleman of Casey Co., Ky. Father: Samuel Coleman. I haven't proven it yet, but Sam was married 3 times. Mother: Millie Coffey born: 1794 in Va. or possibly in Lincoln Co., Ky., now Casey Co. death: abt. April 1, 1853 in Casey Co., Ky. married: Polly Durham Dec. 24, 1822 in Casey Co. Polly born: 1800 Polly's death: Shortly after the August 1850 census was taken. Daniel & Polly had 8 children Daniel & Polly were first cousins Both are buried on Knob Lick Creek Casey Co., Ky. A barn has been built over their grave along with 14 other people's graves. The Gab Wall, that settled the Daniel Coleman estate is buried there , he still has a stone, which is a miracle. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think I'm wrong, Daniel's cabin is still standing there on the creek. This cabin may have been his fathers before he and most of his family moved to Todd Co., Ky. Daniel Coleman of Henry Co., Ky. Father: Stephen Coleman Mother: Mary Ann Foree born: July 26, 1794 Prince Edward Co., Va. death: June 10, 1853 Married: Mary Jeffries 1818 in Shelby Co., Ky. 6 miles from his farm. Mary Jeffries born Dec. 24, 1796 Shelby Co., Ky. death:June 14, 1850 Henry Co., Ky. Daniel & Mary had no children, but Daniel's second wife gave him a son James Daniel, James was born 1851 in Henry Co., Ky. Both are buried next to their home, 2 miles off any road, at route 421 & Beasley Lane. Their house was lived in till 1940 when it burned. The foundation is still in tact & the well has water in it also. I got pictures of the stones and area, it is beautiful place for a home. Daniel & Mary loved 16 miles from Stephen & Mary Coleman, Daniel's parents. Stephen & Mary's house is still lived in as of this date. My brothers & 2 cousins rebuilt the Stephen Coleman cemetery last summer. Daniel lived 10 miles from his cousin, William Lawson Coleman. The William Lawson Coleman house & cemetery is one of the most beautiful places one could visit. The spindle that William L. was hung on during the Civil War by Union troops, was finally replaced last summer. My brothers, Earl "Dickie" Coleman, Harvey Dennis Coleman, and I have spent two and a half years, 50,000 miles plus, over 2000 dollars, and a lot of time, on the research on the two Daniel Coleman's and that is our findings. You folks can do what ever with your Coleman History File, that is our conclusion. The land of Samuel & Daniel, there's 300 acres still being farmed on today in the Casey Co., by their gggg-grand-daughter. James "Sonny" Coleman 9209 Link Rd.
