    1. Question about the 1850 census of Campbell County

    3. Where was the second district of Campbell County? I think my ancestor, Jacob Berst, was enumerated twice. The first time was on page 51, in the City of Newport, on 21 August as residence 827, household 859. He and his 3-year-old daughter, Catherine, were enumerated here with the Leininger family (misspelled Lonigar) to whom he was related. He is 33. The second time was on page 141. The date was 19 September. At the top of the page it says (I think) "The 2nd District." Here he is enumerated as Jacob Barst without his daughter. He is 33. The other family with whom he is living, is headed by a Henry Barst. This Henry is the correct age to have been Jacob's brother. Where was the Second District of Campbell County? Thanks, Buffy

    3. Campbell County was divided into 2 areas in the 1850 census. Newport and District 2 which is everything outside of Newport district. I can't say for certain but I suspect the Newport section probably includes areas near Newport but not actually in the city limits. There may be a map somewhere showing what area is covered in each district but I have not seen it. Finding someone twice in the census is not that unusual. I have what appears to be the same person twice in the 1870 census. They just happened to be caught in different areas on different days while traveling. What bugs me is all the relatives that missed getting counted even once. I am missing a lot of people in the 1880 census for some reason which makes the missing 1890 census a double tragedy.
