    1. KGS Series VI Digital JP Maps Now Available

    3. My friends - I have spent most of this week putting the finishing touches on the KGS Series VI JP Maps in the digital version. All of it seems now to be ready, so they are now available. As a recap, these are digital JPG files of maps of each of the JP counties created in the 1920-1929 time frame by the Kentucky Geological Service. The original maps vary in size from 24" x 24" up to as large as 36" x 48". They show the landmarks(towns, rivers, streams, etc.), as well as schools, churches, roads and other such locations, a fair number of which have disappeared over the years. One of the interesting aspects of these maps is that the KGS did not attempt to update the little towns that had disappeared many years before, and they still appear on the maps. In one case, I noticed a town shown in one county that has been gone since about 1860. In addition, for those in Marshall and Calloway County, they give us a pre-Kentucky Dam view of the counties before the Dam changed the landscape on the eastern sides of the counties so drastically. As such, they are valuable to us. One area which is somewhat disappointing is that few cemeteries are shown. Many churches appear, but cemeteries were not often marked on these maps. I have calculated the costs of the digitization work, plus the costs associated with duplicating(the CD, the mini-jewel case, the labeling, the CD mailer, the cost of First Class postage, etc.). It appears that $13.00 will be the cost for the CD, which includes the postage and mailer. Since the hard copies of these maps were individually available by county for the same amount(and will continue to be, for those who prefer working with hard copy), the CD, for those who prefer digital or can use them in that format, will be a cost saver. I am not attempting to profit from this offering, but I do want to cover my costs, if possible. For those who would like to obtain one of these CD's, remittance can be sent to me at PO Box 51796, Amarillo, TX, or PayPal can be used with my e-mail address above. If this seems to be a popular item, I will continue to have the KGS Series VI maps digitized, continuing the project first across the Tennessee River to the counties just east of the JP region, and then moving further eastward by regions. I have originals of almost all of the KY county maps(which I luckily obtained in an estate sale several years ago), so things can proceed if there is sufficient interest. I hope everyone who celebrates Easter will have a pleasant one. -B =================================================================
