My friends - I continue my stay here in Birmingham and my work at the National Institute of Genealogical & Historical Research. Today was an interesting one, in that we had a presentation about genetics and genealogy(DNA testing), and had a lively discussion on the Thomas Jefferson/Sally Hemings case. It was extremely interesting to be able to discuss this with an expert in the DNA field. Today, as we are doing throughout this week while I am here, another JP Vignette is coming your way. We have moved down to Calloway County, and our subject is Edwin Simpson Diuguid. Tomorrow, we will move over to Graves County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 13 Calloway County - Edwin Simpson Diuguid "Edwin S[impson] Diuguid, Murray, was born in Calloway County August 13, 1854. His father, William H. Diuguid, is a native of Virginia, and came to Calloway County with his parents in 1835; he is a cabinet maker by trade and carried on business a number of years in Murray, but has given his attention more of late years to agricultural pursuits. His wife, Catherine Churchill, is a native of this State. Their union has been blessed with nine children, of whom our subject is the fifth. The latter was reared on a farm, principally, and attended the district schools of the neighborhood, and after a year's course at the Murray Institute, taught school for a term of five months; for our ears following he was employed as salesman by J.D.A. Hale of Murray, two years. With the money thus earned, he was enabled to enter a business partnership with W.P.Gatlin. This firm continued four years up to 1884, since which date Mr. Diuguid has been alone. He carries a large line of groceries, hardware and general merchandise, and enjoys a flourishing trade. Mr. Diuguid is a deacon in the Christian Church, and is one of the trustees of the town. He married, December 9, 1879, Miss Lottie C. Scott, a native of Mississippi. They have two children, Robert S. and Mary E." -History of Kentucky Illustrated - Edition I Battle/Perrin/Kniffen Louisville:F.A.Battey Publishing, 1885 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++
