    3. My friends - I have come across several interesting early newspaper snippets concerning Calloway and Marshall counties, which I am passing along here. -B ================================================================= From The New Hampshire Patriot & State Gazette, Concord, New Hampshire, 15 September 1828: "Wadesboro, August 13, 1828 Sir: Upon examining the returns of the Judges and Clerk's office, I find that Wm T. Berry, one of the candidates for the office of Governor, got in this place 364 votes, in the Blood River Precinct, he got 90 votes, and in the Clarks' River Precinct, 64 votes, making in all 518 - and upon the calculations made by the sheriffs in comparing and adding up the votes taken at the different places, I find that they have made a mistake of 100 votes. They have only given Maj. Berry 418 - the calculation was made in the handwriting of E.Hardy, D.S.[Elisha Hardy, Deputy Sheriff], who is at this time on his way to Frankfort with a statement of the votes. I am very confident that the mistake is not an intentional one. The Sheriff and his deputies are all men of honorable character and standing in society, and two of them are in favor of Maj. Berry's election. I don't know in what was the mistake can be remedied at this time, unless the deputy(who will be in Frankfort when you receive this)can be convinced of the error,a nd the balance of the sheriffs and yourself can receive this test. You will find below a certificate of the sheriff of this county certifying the error. I am myself in favor of Gen. Metcalfe's election[Metcalfe did prevail by a slim majority]; but at the same time, I wish equal justice done to Maj. Berry. Very respectfully, yours, etc. Wm Curd" ~~~~~~~ From The Pittsfield Sun, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 29 July 1858: "In Marshall County, Kentucky, a tree on the farm of Thomas Reed was struck by lightning; two sons of Mr. Reed were instantly killed, and two others were severely injured, one of whom is not expected to recover. Two horses were also killed by the strike." ~~~~~~~ From The Watch-Tower, Cooperstown, NY, 23 April 1827: Frankford[sic] KY March 24 "The 'Focus' contains an advertisement offering a reward of two hundred dollars, for the apprehension of Lewis Hogan, charged with the murder of John Wallis of Calloway County, on the 25th of February last". +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
