    1. Another Follow Up - Digital KGS Maps
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I apologize for again adding to your mail load today. I have received a number of inquiries about the difference between the digital CD version of the JP KGS maps and the hard copy(paper) version. I should have explained that in more detail in my original posting. Several years ago, I bought a collection of original printings of the KGS Series VI maps of KY counties. I had duplication masters created for each of the JP counties. From those, I have made available archival *paper* copies of individual counties which had a cost of $13.00 for *each* county, and I still have those for folks who would rather work with a paper map, than with a digital image of the map. Some of these paper maps are as large as 36" x 48". The CD version, now available, contains JPG images of *all* of the KGS Series VI maps for all counties of the JP region. In other words, there are 8 images on the CD, with each image holding a map of a different county. These are all on the CD, which is also $13.00, which is a boon, from a dollar cost standpoint, to those who can work with the maps in a digital format, right on the computer. The images can be enlarged via the software's zoom capabilities, to the point that one can almost get right down to ground level, parts of each map can be printed(or all of a county can be printed, if the zoom ratio is such that the entire map will fit on a standard letter size sheet - it will be very small though, since the originals are very large). I hope the above helps to clarify the differences. -B =================================================================

    1. KGS Series VI Digital JP Maps Now Available
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I have spent most of this week putting the finishing touches on the KGS Series VI JP Maps in the digital version. All of it seems now to be ready, so they are now available. As a recap, these are digital JPG files of maps of each of the JP counties created in the 1920-1929 time frame by the Kentucky Geological Service. The original maps vary in size from 24" x 24" up to as large as 36" x 48". They show the landmarks(towns, rivers, streams, etc.), as well as schools, churches, roads and other such locations, a fair number of which have disappeared over the years. One of the interesting aspects of these maps is that the KGS did not attempt to update the little towns that had disappeared many years before, and they still appear on the maps. In one case, I noticed a town shown in one county that has been gone since about 1860. In addition, for those in Marshall and Calloway County, they give us a pre-Kentucky Dam view of the counties before the Dam changed the landscape on the eastern sides of the counties so drastically. As such, they are valuable to us. One area which is somewhat disappointing is that few cemeteries are shown. Many churches appear, but cemeteries were not often marked on these maps. I have calculated the costs of the digitization work, plus the costs associated with duplicating(the CD, the mini-jewel case, the labeling, the CD mailer, the cost of First Class postage, etc.). It appears that $13.00 will be the cost for the CD, which includes the postage and mailer. Since the hard copies of these maps were individually available by county for the same amount(and will continue to be, for those who prefer working with hard copy), the CD, for those who prefer digital or can use them in that format, will be a cost saver. I am not attempting to profit from this offering, but I do want to cover my costs, if possible. For those who would like to obtain one of these CD's, remittance can be sent to me at PO Box 51796, Amarillo, TX, or PayPal can be used with my e-mail address above. If this seems to be a popular item, I will continue to have the KGS Series VI maps digitized, continuing the project first across the Tennessee River to the counties just east of the JP region, and then moving further eastward by regions. I have originals of almost all of the KY county maps(which I luckily obtained in an estate sale several years ago), so things can proceed if there is sufficient interest. I hope everyone who celebrates Easter will have a pleasant one. -B =================================================================

    1. Results of Beta Testing & Photo Web Site Help
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am glad to be able to report that all of our beta testers have reported in with their findings concerning the KGS Series VI Digital Maps of the JP region in CD format. The results were uniformly good, including the tests performed with Mac's, with all programs used found to be workable and able to open the images, excepting only one, which is not a mainstream photographic software item. Based on these results, I believe we can proceed to the next step. I am preparing the necessary CD label design, which I hope to have finished in the next few days, after which the item will become available. Many thanks to our beta testers who took the time to check this out for us. Recently, I asked if we might have someone on any of the JP lists which I host who might be willing to help one of our subscribers get a workable website set up on which old photos and other memorabilia could be displayed. I noted that I had obtained unlimited RootsWeb space for this use. Quite a number of people sent messages to me, pointing out that our good friend Don Howell had just such a site over at Yahoo. No one has yet offered to assist in the site setup. I had refrained from mentioning that it is Don who needs our help. He has given permission for me to explain that his Yahoo space ran out some months ago, and that he now needs to get the images at Yahoo over to the RootsWeb site, plus adding more, as they become available. Don has done, and continues to do, a great service in making these early family photos and other items available for our viewing. He has logged many miles going to antique dealers, estate sales, and other places in the JP, and has freely made the results available to all of us. So I am asking again if we might have someone who could work with Don for a short period of time to get the site up and running at the RootsWeb location. It will not be a full-time situation, as Don will handle everything after the initial setup is completed and the process for uploading is established. I would do it myself but for the time constraints which I currently have, and will continue to have for several more months. If we have some folks who would be willing to help Don out, please contact me by private e-mail and I will fill you in on the details and put you in touch with Don. I have had several inquiries about when I might be posting the short histories of the JP Masonic lodges, which I had indicated I would do earlier in the year. I have completed about a third of them(in hard copy), but my source for the information has gone away for the moment. But don't give up on that subject. It is still coming. I apologize for the delay. On another note, our very good friend, Sandi Gorin, whom many of you know as the host of the South-Central-KY List, as well as the State's resident expert on her area of KY, will shortly be having surgery on both of her eyes. I ask that we will all remember her during this time, and keep the hope and prayer that all will be well after these procedures are completed. -B ====================================================================

    1. KGS Digital Map Beta Testing and Tornadoes
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - A note to tell you that beta testing has been virtually completed(I am still awaiting the results from one tester)on the KGS Series VI JP Area Digital Maps beta CD. All of the results so far have been consistently good, including those testers who use a MAC. In all cases but one(a rather obscure program of which I have not seen or heard about), the images could be opened, enlarged, reduced, and otherwise manipulated as the testers saw fit. Unless the final tester has problems, I will be ready to start offering these in a short time. I will, of course, keep the lists posted in this. We have had a much easier time with this testing than we did with the CD on which the Graves County Circuit Court Order Book G page images were held, since we had an index to consider, as well as links to each page in which items in the index appeared. Those were overcome with the invaluable assistance of two of our list subscribers. As most of you are aware, western TN suffered a surge of tornadoes yesterday, with an extremely severe one touching down and doing heavy damage in Dyer Co., TN. Dyer County is just south of Obion County, TN which lies adjacent to Fulton Co., KY. There was loss of life and much property damage from this tornado(the news is saying that as many as 60 funnels were spotted at various times and places in this huge storm). We send our hopes and prayers to the people in that area, and our sympathies to those who may have lost loved ones in this event. -B ====================================================================

    1. Beta Tester Group Complete
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I had said that I would wait 48 hours before moving forward on the selection of the beta testing group for the KGS Series VI digitial JP maps. However, there has been such a good response that I have been able to go ahead and put the testing group together. I raised the number from 5 to 10 to allow for the inclusion of some addition programs. We now have folks who can check 21 different viewing programs, which should give us a well rounded look at whether all is well with this effort. I have been in touch with most of the testers already, and I will keep the lists apprised of the results of the testing. I will, as I have said earlier, be in Seattle at the end of this week, presenting a seminar, but I hope to get these CD's to our testers before I depart. Many thanks to all who volunteered. More to follow...... -B ===================================================================

    1. William Boyd Short and Caroline Wariner or Warren
    2. Charlotte E Flock
    3. Rae and others, When Rae ask me where was my Short family came from, so the marriage record of William Boyd Short and his wife Caroline Wariner or Warren, could be found. I though I wish it could be that easy. But maybe someone out there might have a suggestion. So here it goes. There one child Charles McPherson Short b. 1872 in Massac Co. IL. This information came off of Charles McPherson Short's death certificate. The family story says that his mother Caroline had died a few years after Charles McPherson Short's birth sometime in 1873 -4. And his father William Boyd Short was to have died sometime before the 1880 census. I have been able to locate Charles McPherson Short in the Oklahoma Census. And this is the information I have found 1900 Charles McPherson Short 's Birth Fathers Mothers IL KY KY 1920 IL KY MO 1930 IL IL IL As you see here, I have his father born in tow different states and his mother in three different states. Charles was to have gone and lived with a uncle after his father had passed away. So he would of only been around 8 years old. So when the census takers came by in 1900, all he could remember was KY, or did other members of the family gave out the information incorrectly. I don't know who this family member was, that was to have raised Charles, I understand that Charles left the family when he was around 14 years old, and work on the cattle drive here in OK. So I only have his death certificate to go by, and the family stories. Charlotte

    1. Marriage Lookup Short and Wariner or Warren
    2. Charlotte E Flock
    3. I'm looking for a marriage record of William Boyd Short, married to Caroline Wariner or Warren. Their only child, Charles McPherson Short. On Charles death certificate it mentions his parents names.. The closest that I can figure out that William probably got married in the late 60's but no later then 1872, because that's when Charles McPherson Short was born. I have not been able to place William Boyd Short on the 1870 census. So I want to think that he was married after 1870 but no later then 1872. Remember Charles was born in 1872. But he could of been married before 1870, and I just can't find him on the census. If you happen to have a marriage record book on hand could you please check the index. for William Boyd Short and Caroline Wariner or Warren. Charlotte

    1. Re: LOOKING FOR GIBSON/GIPSON FAMILIES IN THE AREA
    2. I do not have any direct information about Gipson/Gibson families in Calloway Co., KY, but I have come across the name Gipson twice in researching my families in Calloway Co. I am not aware of any famous Gipsons who could be used as name sources, so probably the use of the name would have been from related families. That assumption led me to progress in researching my Wells family. The brother of my GG-Grandfather Wells was Julius Gipson Wells. Searching for the name Julius Gipson led me to Mercer County, KY Gibsons and eventually to Green Co., KY. It turns out that the grandmother of Julius Gipson Wells was Anny Gibson who married Alexander Carson. I am not aware that any of those Gibsons/Gipsons moved to Calloway as did my Wells ancestors. The other occurrence of Gipson was in my Holland family. Emanuel Gipson Holland was the brother of my Great Grandmother Rebecca Holland. They were the children of Josiah Holland and Malinda Miller. Josiah Holland was the son of Daniel Holland and Rebecca Skinner and was born in Robertson Co. in middle Tennessee. Daniel Holland was born in Edgecombe Co., NC. Those two counties might be a good place to search for your Gibsons/Gipsons. Hope this helps. > Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2006 17:24:10 -0600 > From: "holt" <holt@vci.net> > Looking for any information on the Gibson families in this area, and for the > individual below. 1. Early Newspapers - Calloway & Graves Counties
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today we are going to look at the names and owners of early newspapers in Calloway and Graves counties and, in later posts, at the other counties in the JP region. First, however, some housekeeping. As many of you may know, RootsWeb did some moving around last week with some of their mail servers, which caused some UP addresses to change. These addresses had been "whitelisted" by ISP's all over the country so that spam filters would not stop the delivery of RootsWeb messages. There were some notable problems, even after the ISP's were notified, in getting the new IP addresses whitelisted. This seems to have affected AOL users more severely than with some other ISP's. I understand that RootsWeb and AOL are working on getting all of that resolved, and hopefully, such will occur soon. I mention this here not to encourage any discussion of it, but just as a notification in case any of our AOL subscribers were unaware of it. Most AOL based mail seems now to be going through, and hopefully, it will all be flowing again without problems. This JP List, and the other county lists which I host in the JP region, have been relatively quiet over the past week, which may be good, since our AOL subscribers would not, as a result, have to explore the JP List Archives to see what messages had been posted. In the 1960's Victor Portmann did a considerable amount of research on 19th century and early 20th century newspapers in KY. We are going to look at what he found, insofar as the JP region is concerned. Shown below are those newspapers which he found for Calloway and Graves counties. Some of these lasted no more than a few years, while others endured. In looking at these different newspapers, we need to remember that, in many - probably most cases - there is little or nothing available in the way of copies of their issues, until very late in the 19th century and on into the 20th century. Just as an aside - I have not forgotten about the brief histories of the various Masonic lodges in the JP which I indicated I would be posting. I am working on those. They will be coming along in the near future. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Newspapers with Names of Publisher/Editor Murray Gazette - 1874 - Dr. E.S.Gaillard. 3. Hello and thank you so much for your information. It always helps and provides clues for other areas in which to search for them. Quite a few of the Gibsons were also next door to you in Henry County TN and then all the other surrounding counties here in Western Ky as well. I see you mentioned Robertson county TN and Edgecombe County NC, our Trevathan line came from both those areas as well. They married into the both the Gibson and Haggard families. Making all three of my lines related to each other through the numerous marriages. Thanks so much for your email and have a wonderful week.
