Regarding some posts last month discussing Stewart County migrations to Hood County Texas, be aware cable channel HGTV (Home & Garden TV) has a special at 9 PM (CDT) to-nite (4/30) filmed at Davy Crockett's widow's ranch in Hood County. Elizabeth moved to Texas about 1875 to settle on a land grant given her by the State of Texas, and there might be outdoor scenes which would show some of the terrain similarities and differences with Stewart County; her original house is supposedly still standing. I am not sure if Elizabeth Crockett is at rest in Hood County, but know that her son is buried there. ___________________________________________________ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com
My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have another segment in our continuing series on Jackson Purchase Land Grants ready for distribution. This segment contains more surnames which begin with the letter "B". Specifically, the surnames contained in this file are: Burpoe, Brummell, Burkeen, Bulsford, Byrne(many), Bryant, Byrd, Bynum, Bryers and Byerly. Subscribers to the lists which I host can request a copy of this file by sending a message directly to me(not to the List, please) with that request. Please specify *File LG-796*. The file is available in both Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF format. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF is specified. The complete file will be sent, as time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data on individual surnames. If you cannot accept attachments, I can send the file in the body of an e-mail. If this is the desired method of transmission, please specify that you need the file as a *straight e-mail message*. Using this form of transmission will often badly skew the columnar alignments. Just as a reminder, the web site which shows the currently available JP land grants files is located here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm Non-subscriber/PML requests will be honored only if time permits. -B ==================================================================

She was the mother of four children, last one born 1865. Theophilus then married again in 1872. Trying to narrow the field. Thanks for any info you can send me about her death date.
My friends - It is has been brought to my attention that much time can be saved by using the search function of the new JP Surnames database site. There is a box in the upper right corner which has a "Find" button pointing to it. If you enter the surname you are wishing to view, it will bring the data for that surname up in a fraction of the time it takes to load the full database. Also, if your surnames are not already in the database, please DO NOT add new records to the database in which all of the surnames you wish to post are placed in just that one record. A SEPARATE "New Record" screen needs to be used for EACH surname you wish to add. If we do not enter these surnames in this individual fashion, it will severely affect the alphabetizing scheme. While the search feature would probably bring up the surnames, even if in the same field, we still need each surname in its own, separate field in order to peruse the entire database in alphabetical order, and to allow the maximum number of people to post their addresses without starting another field for that surname. Thanks - we've had over 800 entries so far today - really phenomenal. I have been contacted by a number of folks who tell me that they have already contacted - or been contacted by - others on the site who are researching the same family surname(s). It appears it is working well for the purposes we had in mind. -B =================================================================
My friends - On checking my in box this morning, I found 597 e-mails awaiting me, of which 431 were additions to the new JP Surnames website. So you were busy overnight<g>. A few additional thoughts and guidelines: 1) PLEASE DO NOT USE THE *DELETE* BUTTON ON THE RECORD ADDITION PAGE. If you click on it, it will delete the ENTIRE RECORD, including ALL e-mail addresses, not just yours. If you make a mistake in typing your e-mail address into the box, simply move your cursor to the left of the first letter of the address, and use the Delete key ON YOUR KEYBOARD to remove the incorrect address, then re-enter it. 2) Please do not duplicate surnames - if a surname is already in the database, please do not enter a "new" record for the same surname. 3) Surnames which were inadvertently omitted by me in the original database can easily be added. You can do it yourself by adding a "New Record", or send them to me and I will add them. 4) This site is FREE - it does not cost anyone anything. 5) I have had a few folks who have expressed concern about the e-mail addresses that are being posted, and the potential for their being used for commercial purposes, such as the sending of junk e-mail. This is a common problem with *any* web site which contains e-mail addresses. Even if I had posted a private site, web crawlers would have discovered it at some point and those addresses could be harvested and used to send junk e-mail. There is no easy solution to this, and about the only suggestion I can make in this area is that if your concern about that potential is greater than the need to post your surnames, don't use the site. None of us wants to get any more junk mail than we already receive, but anytime e-mail addresses appear on a site, the potential does exist for them to be harvested. 6) Finally, I have received perhaps a dozen private messages from folks criticizing the setup of the website, the use of a "commercial" site, the slow loading time(which I mentioned in my announcement last night), and a few other complaints, including one which expressed dislike of the colors displayed on the site. About the only response that I will give to these concerns is this: I have spent many - very many - hours on this project. The Quickbase site allowed me to get this project up and running quickly so that all of us could have a place to try to make contacts. No site, or arrangement of the table therein, or other aspects of it, will be satisfactory to all of us. If the site is not satisfactory to some, I suggest that they not use it. I am always open to constructive suggestions about anything that I do, but areas over which I have no control are outside my ability to affect. Thanks for your interest and involvement in this project. -B ================================================================
My friends - Thanks to our good friend Pam Ingle, who contacted me and suggested that I explore a fairly new self-service database web site, put up by the Intuit Corporation, I am happy to be able to tell you that we have a web home now for posting the surnames in the Jackson Purchase region which we are researching. As most of you know, I had been laboriously inputting data for the past two-and a half months into a spreadsheet which I planned to place on the web, and which would contain the surnames which had been supplied to me by all of you, along with a mailto link for each subscribers' address who was researching that name within the 8 counties of the JP region. This turned into a very labor intensive task, and I was not progressing as rapidly as I would have liked, due to all of the other genealogical tasks which I also handle on a daily basis. This database site solves all of that. I have uploaded the surname portion of the spreadsheet data to the web site, and have created fields which will hold up to 4 e-mail addresses of those who are researching each surname. In the cases of common surnames(such as Smith, Jones, etc.), the surname is shown on two consecutive lines, thereby doubling the number of e-mail addresses which can be entered. The beauty of this site is that each of you will be able to go to the site, register and log in, and then go to the database and find your surname. When you find it, you can click on the little tab to the left of the surname which says "edit". When that page comes up, you enter your e-mail address and send that back to the program, and it will then appear as a mailto link in one of the e-mail address fields that correspond to that surname. Someone visiting the site can simply click on the mailto link and he/she will be automatically sent to a mail window in whatever mail program they may be using, from which the person can send a message to the other individual. This was exactly how I had planned for the spreadsheet design to work, but this site allows each of you to input your own e-mail addresses, thereby saving me untold hours of work. If there is a downside to it, it is perhaps the fact that you will have to register first in order to get access, but that is a one-time effort. After registering, when you go to the main site, all you need to do is click on the "Log In" button. The database is also somewhat slow in loading, but much of that will depend on the speed of your modem. If you have a DSL line or a cable modem, it will load in a matter of a few seconds. With an analog modem, it may require up to 30 seconds to load, as it is a large database. The URL to the site is: www.quickbase.com - when you arrive there, you will see the main page of Quickbase. On the right is a "Register" button. You will need to complete registration, after which the program will send back to your e-mail address(almost instantaneously) a link to click on for you to complete registration. Once that is done, you can then proceed to the database, the name of which is simply Jackson Purchase. You will find a Search box on the left side of the page when you return, into which you place the words Jackson Purchase and send it. This will bring up the opening page of the Jackson Purchase Database. On the left, click on the choice which says, "View All Surnames". This will then bring up the table with the surnames shown, in alphabetical order. From there, you can scroll down to your research surname(s) and click on the "edit" button on the left, which will take you to a page where you can enter your e-mail address and send it. That will place your e-mail address into the table. This may seem a bit cumbersome, but I think it is worthwhile that there are some steps to take to get to the database itself, in order to discourage "cyber vandals" from "messing with" these databases. I will place a link to quickbase in some strategic locations, and will also perhaps create an "Instruction Page" website to allow new folks who join us to have somewhere to go to know how to add their addresses and surnames to the database. This is really a "trial" for awhile, to see how well this works, and if we have problems. It seems simple enough, but we never know for sure until it gets used. Let me know if you have problems with it. Please be patient with it also, as it apparently gets many hits throughout the day, and response time can be slower at some points than at others. I can't really complain, however, since Intuit is providing this service, at this level, without charge. The site awaits your e-mail addresses....... -B =================================================================

She died at 38, so I never met her in person, but she lived through my grandmothers stories. I really want to learn more about this wonderful family. Thanks in advance. Leah Hoins

Posted on: Calloway County, Ky Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ky/Calloway/10695 Surname: DICK, Luter, Boyd, WYLIE ------------------------- Concerning the cemetery near Boydsville...I was just in the Graves/Calloway Cos. this past weekend. I think that possibly the cemetery you are looking for may be the Story's Chapel Cemetery. I went to both that one and Beech Grove. I have a listing of who is in Beech Grove and your names aren't listed. I would try Story's Chapel. Good Luck.
My friends - As we begin another week of data posting, we are returning to a series which began about two years ago, but which has been dormant since that time. Early Calloway County Wills covers the time frame of about 1838 to 1870. Will Book A has disappeared over the years. It was sent to the KY Archives, but the Archives has indicated that they did not receive it. As a result, our will and estate records in Calloway begin with Will Book B. Subscribers to the lists which I host can obtain an abstract of the will of a person in the listing below by sending a request to me for that abstract. Because some of these can be quite lengthy, even in abstract form, I will ask that requests not exceed two (2) names. As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is greatly appreciated. Just as a side note - the films of the Graves County Order Books have not yet arrived, although, if they were shipped on the date indicated by the Archives, they should have been here by now. I will shortly be making inquiries as to when those films were actually shipped. I will continue to keep you abreast of the situation. Tomorrow, we will return to Hickman County. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Wills - Part 3 Churchill, A[rmistead] G[utherie] Metcalf, Thomas Bogard, Joseph Thompson, Mary Chandler, James Sr. Law, John C. Below is a copy of my E-mail that might be interesting to researchers of the family names mentioned; wwaynen@aol.com is the person to contact for further info.... Cuz'n Wayne Guerin, Got your package this week with more GUERIN/GEURIN info and was pleasantly surprised (again); what's this about Grandpa CHILCUTT (father of Jabez GUERIN's wife Rebecca CHILCUTT) and his heirs getting a settlement from the City of Baltimore at the expiration of a 100-year lease on the lands that part of downtown Baltimore is centered on ? Baltimore isn't what it used to be, but back when these were written, it was still quite a commercial center. It was also interesting to see that the attorney being consulted in Tenn. was named RICE; do you have any further info on his full name ? Combined with your documentation of Thomas GUERIN donating use of his land to George Washington's troops over the winter of 1779-80 at Jockey Hollow in Morristown NJ and that land being the first National Historic Park, you are batting 1,000 ! I have included Anne STAMPS above as a cc: since Anne confirmed that the John B. STAMPS who married Elisabeth B. GUERIN (daughter of Benjamin Conger GUERIN, who was brother to our Sarah Rebecca GUERIN and were children of Jabez and Rebecca CHILCUTT Guerin) was a second cousin to William B. STAMPS who married Jefferson DAVIS' sister. The STAMPS line produced William Stamps FARISH, one of the founders of Humble Oil (Exxon) who was chairman of Standard Oil in the '30-40s....W.S. FARISH III (his grand-son) is currently president of Churchill Downs and has been nominated as ambassador to England. I am hopeful we can get more info from Anne regarding the relationship between these old families. I am perusing the Civil War letters from the Stewart County WHITFORD's you kindly sent, and will photo-copy and return them (would like to digitally scan them someday); I would very much like to see any other correspondence which mentions GG-grandfather John Randolph CHERRY, who was husband to Mary Jane SYKES/SIKES, daughter of William Howell SYKES/SIKES and Sarah Rebecca GUERIN Sykes/Sikes. As you know, John Randolph CHERRY was captured by Union forces at the Battle of Fort Donelson and sent to Chicago as a P.O.W. before marrying Mary Jane SYKES/SIKES and moving to Hood County Texas after the Civil War, so the mentioning of him in WHITFORD's letters is interesting. very best regards, Bob :) ___________________________________________________ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com
