    1. [KYCALLOWAY] New JP Land Grants File Now Available - "E" Surnames - Part - File LG-814-B
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am stopping by today to let everyone know that I now have another segment in our continuing series on Jackson Purchase Land Grants ready for distribution. As I have mentioned recently, I am now in the process of "cleaning up" the collection - finding those little groups of grants here and there that have not yet found their way here. This is one of those groups. The specific surnames contained in this file are: Evans, Everett,Ewell, Efland, Ezell, Eaton, Elston, Elrod, Eastwood, Ellison, Evers, Entreken, Eley, Eldridge and Emerson. Subscribers to the lists which I host can request a copy of this file by sending a message directly to me(not to the List, please). Please request *File LG-814-B*. The file is available on either plain text format or Adobe Acrobat PDF. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless Adobe PDF is specified. If attachments are not workable, the file can be sent in the body of a regular e-mail message, although this will usually badly skew the columnar alignments. If this form is needed, please specify that you would like the file as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data on individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be honored only if time permits. -B ==============================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Jackson Purchase Vignettes - # 11 - Nathan L. Chester - Calloway County
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are looking at the Chester family of Calloway County in this week's JP Vignette. I know we have some subscribers working on the Chester clan, and this bio was found in an Illinois "mug book", published in 1893. This one is particularly interesting, because it also mentions the Rushing, Holland, Frizzell and Harrell families, all originally of Calloway County. These vignettes are taken from various early publications, such as the Todd/Perrin/Kniffen History of Kentucky Illustrated, and other such works of the 19th century, as well as from 19th century newspapers, when such sketches are found in their pages. As is customary, there will be no data post on Friday, or on the weekend, but I expect to have another file offering of some type during this period, so drop by if you are in the neighborhood. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes - # 11 - Nathan L. Chester - Calloway County "Nathan L. Chester, a successful agriculturist of Burnside Township, Johnson County [IL], was born in Calloway County, Ky., February 4, 1844. His father, John Chester, was born in Christian County,Ky., September 17, 1816, to William Chester, a native of the Carolinas, who died in Calloway County, aged about seventy years. John Chester had by his first wife, who was a Miss Elizabeth Frizzell of Calloway County, Ky., four sons and five daughters. She died in Johnson County in 1871, aged fifty-two years, leaving four children, Nancy Jane, widow of John Rushing, now residing on her farm in Burnside Township; Nathan L.; Rebecca, widow of Thomas C. Cole, of Burnside Township; and James M., a farmer in Kansas. John Chester was married to his second wife in 1873, and she died in 1880. He is still living and resides with N.L.Chester. John Chester's mother died in Calloway County, Ky., in 1891, at the age of ninety-five years. The parents of Nathan L. Chester came to Illinois in the fall of 1850 by team, and drive stock. They bought a small farm and deeded eighty acres,to which they added eighty acres more, making one hundred and sixty acres, to the whole of which Mr.Chester has a deed from the government. He had but limited opportunities for securing and education in his youth, but by application to his books, he made seven terms. Failing health, however, compelled him to desist, and he has never since been a strong man, being able to do but little hard labor. He was married March 2, 1865, in Williamson County, this State to Sarah M. Holland, of Kentucky, daughter of Bryant Holland and his wife Nancy Harrell, both of Kentucky, who came to Illinois in the Spring of 1860, and died in Arkansas. Mr. and Mrs. Chester have buried two daughters and two sons, all of whom died in early childhood. They now have three sons and five daughters, viz: Rilda B., wife of Joseph Lay, a farmer of Pope County, and who has two sons living; Lizzie, a young lady of twenty-one years, who is teaching her second term of school; J. Walter, a young man of nineteen; Mary S., sixteen; Roxie, fourteen; Arthur L., twelve; Emma C., seven, and John R. five, all of whom are still under the parental roof and attending school. Mr. Chester has a farm of 137 acres on Section 26, Burnside Township, on which he has resided for 25 years, and has been a general farmer, though he raised some tobacco in former years. he has been School Trustee six years and Justice of the Peace three years. In politics, he has always been a Democrat, and both he and his wife are regular church-goers, attending the Baptist Church, of which they are influential members." -"Biographical Review of Johnson, Massac, Pope & Hardin Counties, Illinois" Biographical Publishing Co., 1893 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I hope that everyone is getting off to a restful start on this Memorial Day weekend. I am dropping by today to let you know that I have another item now converted from the old 5" floppies. Using the "new" conversion system, it goes much faster and easier now, and that will hopefully allow me to do more of these on a more frequent basis than in the past. Today's file contains the burials on North Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Calloway County, up to about 1979-80. Specifically, the surnames contains in this cemetery are Gingles, Gibbs, Ezell, Baker, Boyd, Broach, Bucy, Cain, Collie, Crawford, Edmonds, Dunn, Deason, Davis, Dale, Cunningham, Glasgow, Gordon, Graham, Harris, Heath,Hurt, Jones, Ward, Thornton, Kemp, Swift, Sutherlen, Ross, Robinson, Knouff, Mallory, Magness, Marshall, Mitchell, Morris, Pace, Robinson, Roark, Workman, Wilson and Watkins. Subscribers to the lists which I host can request a copy of this file by sending a message directly to me(not to the List, please). Please request the *North Pleasant Grove File* The file is available in both plain text format and Adobe Acrobat PDF. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF is specified. The data can also be sent in the body of a regular e-mail message if attachments are not workable. If the data is needed in that format, please request it as a *straight e-mail message*, using the file name above. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not allow me to go into the file and extract data on individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be filled only if time permits. -B ===============================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] New JP Land Grants Text File Now Available - "W" Surnames (Part) - File LG-887-8
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today for two reasons - first to thank all of you who reviewed the PDF test page from Graves County Order Book K. The resulting feedback revealed a high level of satisfaction with the image itself and its clarity. Some good suggestions have been made to try to compress the size of the image, and those will be attempted, although the difficulty lies in trying to maintain the pdf attributes, especially in the area of zooming in, if another format such as JPG is used. The solution there may be found in the scaling of the original image, and I will continue to work on this concept and will keep you posted. I also want to pass along the fact that I now have another file ready in our continuing series on Jackson Purchase Land Grants. As most of you know, we are just about complete in our review of nearly 10,000 grants offered in the JP region, and I am now doing some "clean-up" work in putting together surnames which, due to fragmentation and other causes, have not yet appeared. The file offered today has only two surnames contained in it: Wilcox and Wilkins. But there are many grants shown to each surname, including a number to the heirs of these people(the heirs are not mentioned, however, in this index - the original land grant case file would need to be ordered to see if they appear there). Subscribers to the lists which I host can request a copy of this file by sending a message to me(not to the lists, please), asking for *File LG-887-8*. The file is available in both plain text format and Adobe Acrobat PDF. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless PDF is requested. The file can also be sent in the body of a plain e-mail message, although this will often skew the columnar alignments. If this approach is needed, please specify that the file is needed as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the files and extract data about individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be honored only if time permits. -B ===============================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Black Family History in Murray< Howard/Palmer families
    2. David T. Beito
    3. I am looking for any and all information about the family background and early life of T.R.M. Howard, a black doctor who was born in Murray, Kentucky on March 4, 1908. During the 1950s, Howard became an important civil rights leader in Mississippi. Howard's full name at the time of his birth was Theodore Roosevelt Howard (he changed it to Theodore Roosevelt Mason in honor of Dr. William Mason in the 1920s). According to the 1910 census, Howard's parents were Arthur Howard (age 20, born in Tennessee) and Mary Chandler Howard (age 18, born in Kentucky). Their occupations were laborers in a tobacco factory. His parents were later divorced. By the 1920 census, Mary was divorced and re-married to Maurice. Palmer (age 32), who was also born in Tennessee. In addition to Theodore, they had two small children (Mable, age 5 and Henry, age 1). Howard may have had some white ancestors (though I don't know the details) including, according to one account, a "full-blooded Irish grandfather." As a boy, Howard seems to have attended the black AME Methodist church in Murray (now apparently defunct). Does anyone know whether an AME church cemetery (or other black cemetery) exists in Murray for the late nineteenth and early twentieth century? David T. Beito

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] New JP Land Grants Text File Now Avalable - "W" Surnames(Part) - File LG-885
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am stopping by today to let everyone know that I have another segment in our continuing series on the Jackson Purchase Land Grants ready for distribution. We now have available data on over 9000 of the 9800 or so grants that were made in the JP region. Most of the few files which are left to do to complete this series will be rather short ones, with fewer surnames in them, as they are generally "bits and pieces" that I have not picked up in some of the earlier file offerings, for one reason or another. The offering today contains more of the "W" surnames. Specifically, the surnames in this file are: Wheeler, Weatherspoon, Webb, Welding, Weakly, Westray, Weatherford and Weaver. Subscribers to the lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please request *File LG-885*. The file is available in plain text format or Adobe Acrobat PDF. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless PDF is specified. The contents of the file can also be sent as test in an e-mail message, if attachments cannot be used. Using this method will usually badly skew the columnar alignments. If e-mail text is required, please specify that you need to have the file sent as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do no allow me to go into these files and extract data about individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be filled only if time permits. -B =================================================================

    3. Posted on: Calloway County, Ky Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ky/Calloway/10714 Surname: BIGGS, BRIM, BRIMM, SMITH ------------------------- I am still looking for anyone researching the above family names. Here is a listing of names found in Calloway Co., KY (mostly Dist 2. and than Murray) during 1830-1870 census. Joseph BRIMM believe his wife's name was Mary BRIMM. Cicero BRIMM lives with Mary BRIMM in 1850 age 17. Lives with OUTLANDS 1860 census, than 1870 lives with Frances, Mary (27), another Mary E., and Elizabeth. Cicero maybe his middle name not his first. My Greatgrandfather Elias Cicero, went by Cicero. E. L. BRIMM (first name may have been Alexander though) lives with Mary BRIMM on 1850 census. Frances (female) lives with Mary on 1850, unfound on 1860, than w/ Cicero on 1870, not found on any later census as of yet. Mary and Mary E., these are two different women and may have two different father's, both living with Mary BRIMM (40)on 1850 census. Unable to find the first Mary on 1860 but Mary E. age 13 is living with my GreatGreatgrandparents James Richard BRIMM and Mary A F SMITH. On the 1870 census she is livng with Cicero BRIMM. MARY E. BRIMM could be a daughter of a previous marriage of my Greatgrandfather James Richard BRIMM, who I just found out married Cynthia BRUNSON 26 Feb 1846. Or she could be the daughter of NATHANIEL BRIMM (unable to find him on any census or land record) who married Louisa COCKE 2 Feb 1843. Both of these marriages are listed in records as BRINN but they s/b listed as BRIMM or BRIM. Any and all informtion on James Richard BRIMM (my GGreatgrandfather)and any of the BRIMM/BRIM names list above would be greatly appreciated. My GGreatgrandfather James R. (who may have gone by his middle name Richard, alot) married Mary A F(rances) SMITH abt 1850, she was the daughter of Elias W(illiam?)SMITH and Piety BIGGS. I have alot of information about my SMITH line and would love to exchange information on any of the above family Surname List lines Thank you for taking time to read this and responding. Claudia in Seattle.
