My friends - Today, we are returning to our series of Jackson Purchase Vignettes. Our subject for this posting is from Calloway County - Richard F. Hamlin. As is now customary, there will be no data post tomorrow or on the weekend, but if time permits, I will drop by with a file offering of some sort during this period, so stop in and check if you are in the neighborhood. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 19 - Calloway County - Richard F. Hamlin "Richard F. Hamlin of Calloway County was born in Rockingham Co., NC, November 15, 1835, a son of Peter S[tainback] and Virginia A[nn] (Michaux) Hamlin, both of whom are yet living. The mother is a descendant of Abraham Michaux, a Huguenot, whose wife, when a child, was shipped our of France as merchandise, in a hogshead, during the period of persecution of the Protestants in that country. The captain of the vessel, being friendly to the Hugenots, released her from confinement and landed her safely in Holland, where she met and married Abraham Michaux, who had preceded her as a refugee. The father of our subject is a Virginia by birth, removed at an early date to North Carolina, where he was married. In 1839, he came to Calloway County, Ky., when our subject was four years old. Richard F. worked on the farm and around his father's mill, and attended subscription schools until nineteen years of age, when, upon the proceeds of a small legacy derived from his grandfather, he attended school at Rockingham Court House(or Wentworth), N.C. Then, by the financial aid of his aunt, was enabled to attend Chapel Hill University in North Carolina and graduated in 1859. His career as a student is exemplary, holding the position of class orator, associate editor of the college paper, president of the literary society, and always a perfect grade in deportment. During his last year in college, he took a course of law in connection with his other studies. After leaving school he went to Todd County,Ky., where he was first tutor to a wealthy family at a liberal salary, then took under his instruction the children of several other families of the vicinity. During the fore part of the late War, he was Union in sentiment, but he was influenced by relations and friends to enter the Confederate service. He joined Company H, Third Kentucky Infantry, participating in the battle of Shiloh, and the numerous other engagements of the Southwest. In said command he staid until close of the War. Returning to Calloway County, he worked in his father's mill and taught school, was then president of a college in Ballard County two years. Then came to Murray, having previously invested in a stock of groceries, and continued in the same line nine months. He afterward taught school, and in 1882 was elected county clerk. Mr. Hamlin was married June 28, 1868 to Miss Laura Boggs. The union has given four children: Roberta, Virginia, Juliet K., and Richard F. Mr. and Mrs. Hamlin are members of the Christian Church. He is also a Mason and member of the Knights of Honor." -History of Kentucky Illustrated, Edition 1 Battle/Perrin/Kniffen Chicago:Battery Publishing Co, 1885
My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have another segment in our continuing series of JP land grants files ready for distribution. This file is another rather small one, and covers more of the surnames which begin with the letter "T". Specifically, the surnames included in this file are: Turnbow, Turner, Turk, Turpin, Tubbs and Tyler. As I have said before, we have reached the stage in this series that all that remains are various small pockets of grants which have not heretofore been offered, and I have been working on those recently. Subscribers to the JP List and the county lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please specify *File LG-881-A*. The file is available in both Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF format. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF is requested. If attachments are not workable, the file can also be transmitted in the body of an e-mail message, although this will often skew the columnar alignments. If this form of transmission is required, please specify that you need the file as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data about individual surnames. The descriptions of other land grants files which are available to our subscribers are shown on the JP Land Grants web site, located here: www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm Non-subscriber/PML requests will be filled only if time permits. -B ==============================================================================
My friends - I have just returned from a short trip out of town(which produced two 100 year old church pews which my wife will be reworking as antiques), and am dropping by to let you know that I have another segment in our continuing series of JP land grants files ready for distribution. This file is a rather small one, and covers all of the surnames which begin with the letter "I" (Eye). Specifically, the surnames included in this file are: Irvin, Irvine, Ingram, Isle, Isbell, Irby, Imes and Inman. As I have said before, we have reached the stage in this series that all that remains are various small pockets of grants which have not heretofore been offered, and I have been working on those recently. Subscribers to the JP List and the county lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please specify *File LG-833*. On another matter, and as an FYI - I have now received 15 additional mailing tubes for the Proctor and Calloway original grantee maps. I have about 24 order still outstanding, and I am told that I should be able to get the remaining tubes from my supplier on Monday. I will continue to send these map copies out just as rapidly as I can get mailing tubes. I apologize for the small delay in some cases, but I have apparently overpowered the ability of the suppliers here to keep these mailing tubes in stock. If I were to do it over, I would have ordered 100 tubes directly from a manufacturer and had them shipped straight to me. In this case, however, I underestimated the demand for these maps. I have had over 200 inquiries about them, with over 100 actual orders coming in. Maps are always popular with genealogists - especially older ones, or landowner/grantee maps - and this experience has certainly reinforced that basic fact. -B ==============================================================================
Good morning fellow researchers, Can anyone identify these people? Parents, siblings? The following information comes from the Kentucky Marriages database at Ancestry.com, and I think these folks are probably siblings to my DILL ancestor, but I need to verify this with someone who might have these people in their family trees. My direct connection to these families is: Susan DILL married Alexander G. GRUGETT on April 12, 1853 in Marshall Co. The other names that I found and am hoping someone can connect with are: 1. Emily DILL married Elijah C. ROACH on June 12, 1851 in Marshall Co., KY. 2. Mary F. DILL married Hampton B. WAID on March 24, 1855 in Marshall Co. I know that there was at least one other sister, Rosa A., who married Unk. BARNETT, and there was a brother, Andrew DILL who was a Dr., I think. The father of these children would have been (I think) Thomas DILL who came to America from Ireland or Scotland and marrried a Frances WYATT. I think that Thomas DILL was also a Dr., and I believe that Frances WYATT's father was a Dr. Johnathon WYATT. I don't know the name of Frances mother. I found a Thomas DILL and wife Frances on the 1850 Calloway Co., KY census with nine children listed, but they were all just listed with initials, no given names. Can anyone help me connect to the two marriages listed above? And, if so, can you also tell me where any of them are buried? I have not been able to find a buriel record for Susan E. DILL GRUGETT, or for any of the DILL or WYATT families. I have no death date for Susan or any of her family. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know where the DILL and WYATT families are buried. Thank you, Nancy
Looking for ancestors of a BRIDGES family first names GEORGE W. and SARA. and children last found in 1870 Callaway county. George W. Bridges born 1807 with a son named after him George W. Bridges Jr. (1846)and son Thomas W. sisters are, Mary 1845, Martilda 1847, Sara F. 1848, Martha 1850, and Margaret Ann born 1859. This BRIDGES family lived both in TN ;and KY. I find them last in 1870 Callaway county, and in 1880 they are all gone except my line Thomas W. who has moved to boot heel MO. I have NO idea what has happened to the whole family, but they are gone from Ky. I imagine the girls are finally married, and am assuming that George W. SR. and wife Sara have died. would love to know where these folks are at, or where they are buried. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated. pmoorep66@;hotmail.com
My friends - As we resume our data posts today, we are going to return to a series in Calloway County that has been dormant for awhile. I am referring to the Newspaper Snippets which I have posted from time to time in the period of 1875-1910. Many of these came from the Murray Gazette, while others were from other Calloway newspapers. These snippets run from the mundane to the fascinating, covering everything from the description of a fine hat worn by a stylish woman to lengthy death notices and marriage ceremony descriptions, as well as criminal and lunacy pieces - so you never know what you may get. Even if the snippet does not further the lineage, it is often a tiny window into the times in which our forbears lived. Subscribers to the lists which I host can obtain the full text of the snippet on an individual shown in the listing below by sending a request directly to me. Due to the length of some of these snippets, I will ask, as I have before, that no more than 3 snippets be requested from this list. Time constraints would prevent me from doing more than that. As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is greatly appreciated. As a follow-up to my FYI of yesterday on the Proctor and Calloway Grantee Map orders - I went in to see my person at Office Depot today concerning the mailing tubes, and, of their order for 100, they had received 10. She had held all of them for me, and the warehouse has informed the that the remaining 90 will arrive Wednesday or Thursday. As a result, I will be sending out 10 maps or map sets tomorrow. I now have about 30 orders in hand, adding those which arrived today. I will get the remainder of them out just as rapidly as those mailing tubes arrive. Tomorrow, we will move back to Graves County. -B ============================================================================== Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Part 6 Douglass, J. My great grandmother on the Clark side was Fannie May Todd Clark. Her parents are listed on her death certificate as James R. Todd (Barren Co) and Nancy Elkins (Calloway Co). Fannie's birthdate is May 17 1880 and she was born in Calloway Co. She is buried in South Pleasant Grove Cemetery. She was married to Carrol Witt Clark (son of Malcolm and Permelia Cooper Clark). Any information on Fannie May Todd would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! ~ Mary (Clark) Young ~ Mary (Clark) Young ________________________________________________ PeoplePC: It's for people. Hello, I realize that there was a courthouse fire in 1886. What records survived? I am interested in wills. Thanks! Lisa Kirk-Hutchinson
My friends - After having talked about the JP 1880 Proctor Map over the past few days(and I have had requests for more than 70 of them and the requests are still coming in), I now have the good fortune to be able to offer yet another map connected with the JP region. Those of you who attended the JP Homecoming last October will remember that our good friend Don Simmons showed us some maps on which he had been working for many years. His goal was to have maps of each county in the JP, showing the name of the original grantee for each quarter section. His first effort was Calloway County, and it is complete, except for just a few quarter sections on which no record seems to exist which shows the original grantee. Don indicated that he had donated a copy of the large finished map to the Kentucky Historical Society. There are some segments of the Calloway map on the JP Images web site, as well. Now, however, several copies of the large 3 foot by 3 foot full map of Calloway County have been retrieved and I have them on hand. If there are those who would be interested in having a copy of this original grantee map of Calloway County, please contact me by private e-mail for further details. It is a fascinating map, and we owe Don a great debt for all the years of work that he has put into this project, and, with his blessing, we are now able to have it available for those who need a copy. It can be an excellent tool for reconstructing early neighborhoods, and determining who owned lands adjacent to one another, etc. So if you are interested in this particular map, contact me privately. -B ==============================================================================
My friends - I am stopping by today to say that I have another segment in our series on JP Land Grants ready for distribution. As I have said in past posts, I have just about completed the conversion of the nearly 10,000 grants offered in the JP region. What is coming along now are those grants which were omitted, due to some technical glitch or oversight. This file contains more of the surnames beginning with the letter "G". Specifically, the surnames contained in this file are: Green, Gregory, Greer, Gresham, Gerill, Greenwood, George, Geet and Gibson. Subscribers to the lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a message directly to me (not the List, please). Please request *File LG-820*. The file is available in both Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Plain Text will be used unless PDF is specified. The file can also be sent in the body of an e-mail message, if attachments are not workable, although this form of transfer will usually skew the columnar alignments. If this method is required, please state that the file is needed as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data about individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be honored only if time permits. I will be back momentarily with another posting for the JP and Calloway lists only, concerning another map offering. -B ==============================================================================
