    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Jackson Purchase Vignettes - # 21 - Calloway County - John R. Schroader
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today's post is another in the JP Vignettes series. Our subject is from Calloway County - John R. Schroader. As is now customary, there will be no data post on Friday or on the weekend, but I do hope to return at some point with a file offering, as well as doing some additional work on the Master Index of the Graves County Order Book G. So if you are looking around in cyberspace, drop by and check in. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 21 - Calloway County - John R. Schroader "John R. Schroader was born in this county, July 29, 1853. his father, Obadiah A. Schroader, was born near Bowling Green, this State, January 22, 1829, a son of John G and Spicey (Amos) Schroader. John G. was a native of Maryland, a farmer by occupation, and came to Kentucky when a boy. O.A. Schroader was reared on a farm, and only permitted to attend school during the worst winter weather. At 18 years of age, he began farming for himself, and at 20 began learning the blacksmith trade; in1849 he came to Murray and opened a shop, and after extended his work to the manufacture of wagons, in which he has continued to the present time, now having a well established reputation and trade in that line, and employing a number of hands. In a financial way he has been very successful, having a farm of 300 acres, aside from his business interest, which is the result of his personal industry and good management. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and takes an interest in the temperance cause. his wife was Miss Susan C. Poole, a native of Murray, Ky; she is a member in good standing of the Methodist Church. They have been blessed with 11 children, 5 of whom survive. Their son, subject of this sketch, was given a good literary education, and in1874 began the study of law, and was admitted to practice a year later. he is at present county examiner, a position he has filled since 1875. In the temperance cause, he is devoting his voice and influence for its success." -History of KY Illustrated, Edition 1 Todd/Perrin/Kniffen Louisville: F.A.Battery Pub. 2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are moving down to Calloway County to add another installment to our series on Early Newspaper Snippets. This group is in the 1900-1915 time frame. As I have mentioned in earlier posts in this subject area, these snippets may contain nothing more than a mention that someone is in some town visiting someone else(but often that someone else is a relative). They may contain birth, marriage or death notices, or comments on the fact that someone is ill. Occasionally, we will see a discussion of a criminal matter or trial. So we never know what we will get, but these little items do give us a bit of insight into the flavor of the times. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full text of the snippets related to an individual shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. As always, your assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request continues to be appreciated. Because some of these snippets can be lengthy, I would ask that no more than three (3) snippets be requested. Tomorrow, we will have another in the JP Vignettes series. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Part 7 Carter, I.A. 1. [KYCALLOWAY] look up for Geo.W. Bridges in Callaway county.
    2. Patricia Moore
    3. Does anyone have a cemetery book for Callaway county that can check for a George W.Bridges or a Sarah Bridges for me? I have last found them in Callaway county in 1870, and at this time George is 67 yrs old. He then has just disappeared after that along with wife Sara and children. Most of the children are girls except for one son named Thomas, and another named George W. Jr Bridges. I guess the girls are married, but cant figure out what happened to the men folk. Maybe mom and dad died? If someone has a cemetery book on this county, I sure would appreciate a look up. Much thanks to S.K.S. Patty pmoorep66@hotmail.com

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Miscellaneous Files - Calloway County - Locust Grove Cemetery
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am stopping by today to let everyone know that I have converted another item from the old 5" floppy collection which I have mentioned here from time to time, and it is now ready for distribution. This items contains the known burials in the Locust Grove Cemetery in Calloway County, up to about 1968. This Cemetery is located in the south central part of the County, near the little town of Locust Grove. The earliest birth year which I found was 1794, and the burials in this Cemetery appear to have begun in the early 1870's. Specifically, the surnames for this Cemetery include: Wymores, Albritten, Matheny, Burton, Cannon, Cathcart, Dodd, Edmonds, Elliott, Wright, Farris, Jackson, Kuykendall, Linn, Williams, Wilcox, McBride, Osborn, Perry, Robertson, Todd, Rose, Smith, and Todd. Subscribers to the lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please request *Locust Grove File*. The file is available in both Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF formats. The file will be sent as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF is specified. If attachments are not workable, the file can also be sent in the body of an e-mail message, although this approach will often skew the columnar alignments. If this type is required, please specify that you need the file as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data on individual burials. -B ==============================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Burton & Elliott
    2. Hello, I'm hoping someone out there may be able to help identify who these children belong to. I think they may be the children of Mary BURTON, born appx. 1844 but I'm not for sure. Does anyone know of them or who their father may be? Am I correct in believing that they are Mary's children? On the 1880 Census for the Liberty dist. #3, family 239 I've located Elizabeth BURTON ALDERSON and family, listed with them is a niece, Victori ELLIOTT age 10. and on the same page of this census is Elizabeth's BURTON family, (census family 243) Morris G. BURTON and Martha OVERBY BURTON, they have a Josephine E. Ellioth, age 14 listed as grand-daughter, Jas R. ELLIOTT age 10, grand son, and Geo B. ELLIOTT age 6, grandson,. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you all, Karen ksb1974@aol.com

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] New JP Land Grants Text File Now Available - R Surnames (Part) - File LG-864
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have another segment in our continuing series of JP land grants files ready for distribution. This file is one from which I have offered individual parts in the past, but I have reworked it to include some surnames that were missed originally. This file covers more of the surnames which begin with the letter "R". Specifically, the surnames included in this file are: Rowland, Rowlett, Roberts, Robinson, Ross, Roberson, Roper and Rogers. As I have said before, we have reached the stage in this series that all that remains are various small pockets of grants which have not heretofore been offered, and I have been working on those recently. Subscribers to the JP List and the county lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please specify *File LG-864*. The file is available in both Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF format. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF is requested. If attachments are not workable, the file can also be transmitted in the body of an e-mail message, although this will often skew the columnar alignments. If this form of transmission is required, please specify that you need the file as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data about individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be filled only if time permits. On another matter, the Graves County Order Book G page segments which were abandoned by several of the indexing volunteers have been reassigned to other volunteers who have graciously offered to handle an additional segment to help us complete the indexing. Those segments will go out on Monday, and we expect to have them back within two weeks, at which time I will begin work on merging the segments and getting the master index on-line. Many thanks to these folks who were willing to help us out. -B ==============================================================================
