    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 32 - Calloway County - Ben Grogan
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I trust that everyone passed a pleasant Christmas Day. All went well here, and we now face the coming of the new year shortly. Since the JP List has basically been "in recess" this week, I am dropping by today to post a short JP Vignette for Calloway County. Out subject is Ben Grogan, a banker of the early to mid 20th century. Although I will not be bringing any data posts to the List tomorrow or on the weekend, I do intend to drop by with the next offering of images from Graves County Order Book G at some point. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 32 - Calloway County - Ben Grogan "Ben Grogan is one of the best known men in Calloway County by reason of his activity in everything worthwhile. If a thing looks good for the City of Murray and the County of Calloway, Ben Grogan will be found at the head of the procession in putting those things across. Mr. Grogan is a descendant of the early settlers of this section. He was born in Calloway County, near Shiloh, June 24, 1888, and is a son of the late Dr. John T. and Mrs. Edna Grogan. His education was obtained from Murray High and the Southern Normal University of Huntington, Tenn. At any early age he became interested in bank work, accepting employment with the Bank of Murray in 1906,and has been continuously connected with that institution since that time, being at the present time its active Vice-President. On November 4, 1913, he was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Whitnell, daughter of Mr. William Whitnell. He is a member of the Methodist Church and a Democrat. A progressive citizen, a successful banker and a man who believes in doing things - that's Ben Grogan - active Vice-President of the Bank of Murray, and a good one." -History of Calloway County, Kentucky - 1931 Murray, KY: Murray Ledger & Times, 1931 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 31 - Calloway County - George N[eville] Cutchin
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I have just returned home from my two day visit to the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. Today, as promised, we are having another in the JP Vignettes Series. Our subject in this segment is George Neville Cutchin of Calloway County. As is now customary, there will be no data posts per se tomorrow or on the weekend. I may be able to get another 25 page segment from Graves County Order G prepared and if so, I will announce it on the JP and Graves lists. -B One small, additional personal note - I've spent a lot of years tracing down great-uncles and aunts, but the tables were turned at 6 PM today when my niece gave birth to her first child - a girl(and named for my wife) - my first *great* anything. A nice feeling - life replenishes itself and what we do in genealogy gives the new generations, we hope, a better understanding and appreciation of from whence they came. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 31 - Calloway County - George Neville Cutchin "Hon. George N[eville] Cutchin, present member of the State Legislature from Calloway County, of which he is a native, was born in 1851. His father, William H[uddleston] Cutchin, was born in North Carolina, removing to Calloway County in early life, where he engaged in general farming, with which he combined the honored and laborious work of pioneer school teacher. He died in this County in 1869. Catherine L[indsey] Martin Cutchin, who is still a resident of Calloway County, Ky., is the mother of our subject. She was born in Kentucky, and is a granddaughter of General William Green of Revolutionary fame. George N. Cutchin is the fifth of a family of nine children born to these parents, and reared on the farm, to which industry he still devotes his attention. He received the benefits of his father's teaching, supplemented by a course of study at the Murray Institute, obtaining thereby a good English education. In August 1883, he was elected by the people of Calloway County to represent them in the lower house of the State legislature, a position he now occupies with acceptance. In 1879[March 5], he married Miss Sallie B[uchanan], daughter of Joel H[awes] and Mary [Sarene Bailey] Curd, and to them have been born three children:Tommie[Lillian Thomas], Ethel G[reene] and Carlisle Cutchin." 1. [KYCALLOWAY] Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Continued
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are moving down to Calloway County and we will continue with our series on newspaper snippets taken from the Murray Ledger in the years 1907, 1908 and 1909. These snippets can be very short one-liners, saying little more than announcing the fact that someone is visiting someone else(and those can be useful, since those visits were most often to relatives)from out of town, or vice-versa, or they can be several paragraphs long, with an extended death notice or obituary with an extraordinary amount of valuable information in them. They can also be descriptions of criminal acts and announcements that individuals have been committed to the State Asylum in Hopkinsville. So we never know what one of these items may contain. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can request the full text of a snippet for an individual below by sending a request directly to me. As is the custom with snippets, I will ask that there be no more than 3 snippets requested, as some are very lengthy. And, as always, you continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is greatly appreciated. Tomorrow, we will move back into Graves County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Continued Osburn, Killus B. 3. My friends - Due to some events in the Internet world over the past few days, I am not making a data post today, but do need to mention some items that some of our subscribers may be having to deal with now, or in the near term future. First, many of you are undoubtedly aware that there was a large loss of Internet service as supplied by home.com over the weekend. Depending on the location and "local" carrier of the service, some home.com subscribers were affected, while others were not. In the case of the lists which I host for the JP region, I am currently receiving about 15 bounce messages from home.com addresses. There are about 60 subscribers(total, for all lists)who have home.com addresses, so, at this point, it appears that about 25% were affected. There are various changes being made to try to remedy the situation, especially in the case of those people who were connected to the Internet through the AT&T network. AT&T has been able to switch addresses for many people, which enabled them to get back on-line again. However, this causes problems for those folks who are subbed to mail lists under the old home.com address. I am getting a fair number of requests from subscribers to change e-mail addresses. This can be done by each individual, and here is the process by which it is done: Configure the e-mail program so that the "Reply-to" address is the old address. With that done, send a message to Listname-L-request@rootsweb.com(substituting the actual name of the list for the word Listname, such as KYJacksonPurchase-L-request@rootsweb.com), with nothing in the Subject header and only the word Unsubscribe in the message body area. The word "request" must be in the address string so that the RootsWeb server, which keys in on the Reply-to address, will recognize the message as a command. After that message has been sent, reconfigure the e-mail program to show the new e-mail address as the Reply-to address, and then send another message to the same address as the unsub message was sent, except, in this case, the word Subscribe is placed in the message body. This process will unsub the old address and subscribe the new one. This home.com situation has caused a considerable amount of disruption and has been the topic of much discussion on the lists to which the list hosts subscribe. It causes additional problems, because the bounce message that come back to us do not contain the abbreviated address which is the one under which the subscription was originally set up - the address is expanded to include things like ".....@excite.home.com, which does not register with the RootsWeb server, and therefore the server will not automatically unsub an address after a certain number of bounces - the addresses have to be unsubbed manually by each list host. Some list hosts have unsubbed all home.com addresses, but, because certain parts of the world were not affected by this situation, I have elected to wait until it appears that all of the home.com addresses that are now bouncing are legitimate non-working addresses, and not someone who simply has an over quota inbox or other problem. All of this will be transparent to the lists, but I did want to acknowledge the fact that I am aware of the situation and the problem and will deal with it accordingly. Anyone who is experiencing a problem in this area with the lists which I host can contact me by *private* e-mail(not through the lists, please), and I will try to be of assistance. I can also report, just as an FYI, that the proliferation of the new BadTrans worm seems to have been reversed. I have received only 3 messages today which were infected with this pesky nuisance. It has served as a good reminder to all of us to never open unexpected and unknown attachments, and to always have a good anti-virus program running and to keep it updated. In the world of genealogy as a whole, and as another FYI, RootsWeb/Ancestry has pulled down the on-line vital statistics birth databases for California and Texas, which were accessible through their home site. There has been a considerable uproar in California over the potential for identity theft through the use of such on-line records, and it appears that RootsWeb/Ancestry has decided to wait out the final result of all of that. This is not a topic for discussion on any of our JP based lists, but I did want to mention it in case anyone who may not be aware of the situation attempts to access those databases and find a "Permission Denied" screen appearing. We will resume data posts on the JP List tomorrow. I will complete sending out the Graves County Order Book G page images that have been requested by the end of the day today, and I can then proceed with digitizing the next 25 pages. As I have mentioned before, we are moving along at a much faster clip than I had anticipated, which is good news, since I will get to the pages with the higher numbers(which many of you are apparently awaiting, based on messages I have received)much sooner than I had anticipated. -B =============================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Time to Update & Run Your Anti-Virus Program
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am stopping by this morning to say that there is a new strain of the BadTrans worm/virus which is proliferating throughout the Internet. I have received 32 messages in the past 48 hours with the virus in them. Ordinarily, I do not bring virus information to the lists which I host. However, given the rapid spread of this strain, I want to urge you to update your virus definitions(this new strain just appeared a few days ago and if your AV program has not been updated, it may not catch the virus as it comes in), and then run a full scan of your system to insure that this virus is not lurking in your machine. One of the telltale signs that you have received a message with the virus in it is an underline mark at the start of the address, such as "_joesmith@anywhere.net". I have received messages from a number of people on the various lists which I host which were infected with this virus. If you have sent a message to me, and you get no response, it may be due to my AV program having quarantined the entire message, making it unavailable for me to respond to. Here are a couple of URL's with information on the current BadTrans strain and how to clean it: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html As usual, there is no need for any discussion on this topic on the lists. The Virus-L list is the proper location to discuss the ins and outs of this new strain. I will return later with today's data posting. -B ============================================================================ == ============================================================ The contents of this electronic message are confidential and may not be forwarded or copied without the consent of the author.

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Continued
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today we are going to move down to Calloway County and continue our review of some of the early newspaper snippets from the Murray Ledger. In keeping with my pledge, made about two years ago, to occasionally present material that reaches into the 20th century, these snippets will cover the period of about 1907 to about 1912. For those who may be new subscribers, these snippets are taken from the newspaper(s) of the era, and may contain anything from a simple notice that someone from out of town is visiting someone else, to marriage and death notices, and obituaries, and, occasionally, murder trials and stories - it can be just about anything. It harks back to a time when most people in an area knew everyone else, and even information about out of town visitors was of interest to the readers of these newspapers. Subscribers to the lists which I host who see a name in the listing below on which the full text of the snippet is desires can send a request directly to me for that information. I will ask, since some of these snippets can be quite lengthy, that no more than three (3) snippets from the listing below be requested. And, as always, your assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request continues to be greatly appreciated. 3. My friends - On my last night in Oklahoma, we are continuing we our Jackson Purchase Vignette series, with a focus on Calloway County. I am "borrowing" (with permission) from a posting of our good friend, Sandi Gorin, to the KYBIOGRAPHIES List, the bio on Charles William Milliken, who was born in Calloway County, but removed with his parents, back into "Old Kentucky" at an early age. Today's subject is Edwin Simpson Diuguid. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes # 25 - Calloway County Edwin Simpson Diuguid "A history of Calloway ad the men who helped to make it would be incomplete without a sketch of Mr. Edwin S. Diuguid, who is one of the main factors in making the city of Murray and Calloway County what they are today. Mr. Diuguid was born August 13, 1854, in Calloway County, being the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H.Diuguid, deceased. He was reared on a farm and attended the Murray Academy, the Utterback County School and the Murray Male and Female Institute, securing a good education from these well taught institutions of that day. Fifty-five years ago he accepted a position with one of the mercantile establishments of Murray, and three years later, in 1879, engaged in business for himself in Murray, and has since that time been actively and continuously at it, making him of the oldest, most successful and best known merchants in the State of Kentucky; and, lest you forget, he is still doing business and lots of it at the same old stand in Murray. So long has he been engaged in the furniture and hardware business in Murray that people can't help thinking of 'Diuguid' when they think of furnishing their home. In 1879, Mr. Diuguid was married to Miss Lottie C. Scott, and this union was blessed with the following children: Robert S., deceased; Mary E. Taylor, living in Little Rock, Ark.; Katherine Kirk, Murray; Herman O., deceased, and Ed S., who is engaged in business with his father in Murray. He is an elder of the Christian Church of Murray and has been for many years, and a Democrat. He has never held political office, but has been President of the Bank of Murray for thirty years and is the President of that institution at this time. ..." -History of Calloway County, Kentucky, 1931 (Murray: The Ledger & Times, 1931) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++

    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted the cemetery list for the CALLOWAY County Poor House, which was generously submitted by S. Leigh Gray. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on KENTUCKY on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on Cemeteries, you will see the entry (with a yellow NEW arrow). (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] New JP Land Grants Text File Now Available - "H" Surnames(Part) - File LG-826-B
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have another segment in our continuing series of JP land grants files ready for distribution. This file is another segment in the process of filling in some blanks that have been omitted from earlier files. This file covers more of the surnames which begin with the letter "H". Specifically, the surnames included in this file are: Haydock, Hays/Hayes, Hayden, Hawthorn, Hawkins, Haws, Happy, Hazlewood, Hatchett, Handlin, Hanberry, Harp, Hartsfield, Harpole, Haines, and Haley.. As I have said before, we have reached the stage in this series that all that remains are various small pockets of grants which have not heretofore been offered, and I have been working on those recently. Subscribers to the JP List and the county lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please specify *File LG-826-B*. The file is available in both Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF format. I will send the file as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF is requested. If attachments are not workable, the file can also be transmitted in the body of an e-mail message, although this will often badly skew the columnar alignments. If this form of transmission is required, please specify that you need the file as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data about individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be filled only if time permits. A brief update on the progress being made on the Master Index of Graves County Order Book G. All of the indexed segments have now been merged into the master index file. However, because of minute inconsistencies from one indexed segment to another, the merging process was not flawless, and I am now going back and consolidating duplicate individual listings with other, identical listings, with different page numbers, into a single listing for all of the pages on which the name appeared, rather than having 10 listings for the same name with different page numbers after each listing. That process is time consuming, but I am well underway with it, and hope to have it finished in the near future, so that I can get the Master Index on-line. I will keep the Graves and JP lists posted on progress. -B ===============================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] New Jackson Purchase Land Grants Text File Now Available - "Y" Surnames (All)
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have another segment in our continuing series of JP land grants files ready for distribution. This small file is another segment in the process of filling in some blanks that have been omitted from earlier files. This file covers all of the surnames which begin with the letter "Y". Specifically, the surnames included in this file are: Yandle/Yandel/Yandell, Yates, Yarbrough, Young, York and Youstler.. As I have said before, we have reached the stage in this series that all that remains are various small pockets of grants which have not heretofore been offered, and I have been working on those recently. Subscribers to the JP List and the county lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please specify *File LG-891*. I want to take a moment also to remind us about List guidelines and procedures. We do not review or advertise commercial genealogical products on the JP List, or any other list which I host. We also do not send lookup requests or the results from those requests back through the List. Offers to perform lookups are welcome, but requests for those services should go by private e-mail to the person offering the lookups, and the response to the request should go back via private e-mail. Any other approach can result in "flooding" the List with both requests for lookups and responses to those requests, which are usually of a very specific nature and not of general interest to a majority of our subscribers. Your assistance is these areas is, as always, very much appreciated. I am currently working on the Master Index for Graves County Order Book G, and I hope to have it ready to go on-line within the next few weeks. -B ===============================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Miscellaneous Files - Calloway County - Almo Cemetery
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am stopping by today to let the Lists know that I have now completed converting another of those files on the several hundred old 5" floppies that I have on hand. This file contains the burials in the Almo Cemetery in Calloway County, up to about 1975. It is a middle sized cemetery, with about 150-200 burials. The earliest birth year that I noticed was 1831, but there may be some earlier birth years that I did not see in my cursory review of the contents of this file. Specifically, the known surnames buried in this cemetery are: Wright, Roberts, Alexander, Beach, Beale, Belcher, Redden, Blakely, Brewer, Britton/Brittain, Burge, Calhoon, Clark, Cleaver, Clendenon, Cooper, Hendricks, Copeland(2), Crouch, Dailey, Fields, Duncan, Edwards, Fakes, Farmer, Hatcher, Geurin, Gream, Grunwald, Gurrent, Hargrove, Miller, Henson, Hicks, Hopkins, Hubbs, Hunt, Mayes, Hurt, Imes, Jackson, Jones, Joslin, Lee, Lewis, Manning, Parker, Rose, Trevathan, Shelby, Starks, Stephenson, Stroud, Swift, Taylor, Thompson and Tidwell. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). Please request *File Almo*. The file is available in either Plain Text or Adobe Acrobat PDF format. I will send the file as a Plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless PDF is specified. The file can also be sent in the body of a regular e-mail message, if attachments will not work, but this will very often skew the columnar alignments. If this form of transmission is required, request the file as a *straight e-mail message*. The complete file will be sent, as time constraints do not allow me to go into the file and extract data about individual surnames. Non-subscriber/PML requests will be filled only if time permits. -B =============================================================================
