    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Cemeteries
    2. I just found the death certificate for my great grand mother Lubitha Tennie Chilcutt. She married William B. Chilcutt. Her obit states her name as Mrs. Tennessee Shipley. On the death certificate he states that she is buried at the Liberty Cemetery in Hazel Ky, which is in Calloway Co. Does anyone know or have access to finding out who else is buried there. I am hoping that William B. Chilcutt, according to Tennie's obit, he died 17 years before her. She died in 1945 which would of made his dealth date about 1928. I would really would love to find out the full date of his birth and death. Any help would be appreciated. Robbie

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Calloway County - KY Cases at Law - JP Region - McGee vs. Anderson
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am sending along the second item in the new series on KY Cases at Law, which is concerned with appeals from decisions made in the circuit courts of the counties in the JP, as well as in some other KY counties when the surname is connected with one or more in the JP region, or when the case is particularly instructive in the KY legal system's handling of estates or other genealogically important subject areas. The synopsis of the case we are reviewing today is shown below. This is one of the cases reported in which the given names of the plaintiff and defendant are not given. However, the case is interesting, as it involves KY tax laws, and we may have McGee or Anderson descendants on the JP or Calloway lists. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can receive images of the pages from the original Reporter in which this case was contained by sending a request to me. However, the requests will have to go into the queue with the Graves County Order Book G page image requests, until I receive the return of my main computer, which is, as you know, in the shop for repairs. I appreciate very much the kind wishes of many who sent private messages about my wife and her fractured rib following a fall. While still very painful, I think we are slowly recovering. Some 2-4 weeks will be needed to get over this injury. As is now customary, there will be no data posts tomorrow or ont he weekend. Since it appears that I will not have my main machine back in service until early next week, there will very likely be no file offerings, either, as those are contained on that machine. I will drop by with perhaps an item of interest for us JP researchers. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++ Calloway County - KY Cases At Law - McGee vs. Anderson Synopsis of Case: KY Court of Appeals Spring Term, 1841 Plaintiff: ------- McGee Defendant: ---------- Anderson (Sheriff) Type of action: Trepass Attorney: J.T.Morehead for Plaintiff Narrative: McGee charged Anderson with stealing and converting a mare. Anderson claimed that he was justified in doing so, working under an order of execution to seize the mare and subsequently sell her. The defendant posed that, at that time, he was a bona-fide housekeeper with a family and hadonly two horses. He elected to keep the mare levied upon under the statutory tax exemption ofone work beast, and had tendered the other mare to Anderson, the Sheriff, on the day of the sale, to be sold in place of the mare seized, as he desired to keep the seized mare. The defendant claimed that the Plaintiff also had a yoke of oxen, and thereby had more than 2 work animals. McGee failed to make answer to this allegation and a summary judgement at bar was made against him, which he appealed to the KY Court of Appeals. Decision: Affirmed. The Court held that the Sheriff was not guilty of trepass and that McGee, under the law, and assuming by his failure to answer the defendant's allegations concerning his having more than 2 work animals in his possession, was not entitled to exchange mares, even on the day of the sale. The General Execution Law of 1828 was cited as source law for the decision. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] More About Fidelity - Calloway County
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - A number of our subscribers have sent notes to me, asking that I talk a bit more about the Fidelity community in Calloway County and about Professor Wilson's book, "Fidelity Folks". In lieu of the delayed terminology posting that was set for today's JP List, I will review some things about Fidelity. Fidelity was a community located in the south-southeast part of Calloway County, on the Blood River, and somewhat east of New Concord. Brandon's Mill was northeast of Fidelity(and Professor Wilson has a chapter in the book on Brandon's Mill). Professor Wilson provided two excellent graphics inside the covers of his book. One is a map of the area of the County where Fidelity was situated, and includes such landmarks as the locations of Fort Henry, Shiloh Landing, Buffalo Landing, "Mill Jimmy's Mill", Sulphur Springs Church, "Marse Peter's[Rowlett] Tobacco Factory" and other such buildings, with roads, creeks and rivers shows, as well. The other drawing is entitled, "Fidelity - 1888-1906", and shows houses, the school house, the dentist's home, the "graveyard", Union Church, the tobacco factory, general store, Fidelity Hotel, and other buildings on the street or two that ran through Fidelity. These are really useful and remarkable drawings. I have scanned them and plan to put them up on the Jackson Purchase Images website for a time. I cannot do so today, because RootsWeb, on whose server the Images web site is held, is doing routine maintenance on their servers and I cannot get access to ftp the images up to the server. However, those of you that are interested in these drawings, and would like to see them at once can send a private e-mail to me, and I will send the image files directly to you. Fidelity had, by 1900, almost disappeared. My late grandmother, who was born in 1883, remembered passing through in a buggy, numerous times, what was still called Fidelity in the 1893-1898 time frame, when she was a child, but, even then, it was only a vestige of its former self. Professor Wilson was well remembered by his former students as a man who was an excellent instructor, who was somewhat eccentric, and who had a fabulous, infectious "giggle" that he often employed in his teaching technique. In reading over the book again, he uses some literary license, I think, that tends to build upon, and enhance, his remembrances, but may not be absolutely factual relative to the actual events. The book was written in 1946, and his style and remembrances, for example, reflect the general regional thinking, even as late as 1946, about the African-American residents of Fidelity. He is complimentary in all respects, but, for example, he titles one chapter, "Our Uncle Remus", which, in today's society, might not always be universally well received. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating, and now a rare, book, and I hope to bring more selections from it to the JP and Calloway lists as we go along. There will be no data posts per se over the weekend, as we head into the July 4th festivities next week, but I hope to return with a file offering of some type at some point. -B =========================================================================

    1. [KYCALLOWAY] Calloway County - "Fidelity Folks"
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I had planned for us to move on to McCracken County for our data post today, but, in continuing to unpack from the 122 boxes which contain genealogy materials from our former residence, I was reacquainted with Professor Gordon Wilson's fascinating 1946 book entitled,"Fidelity Folks - A Visit to a Self-Sufficient Kentucky Village". Professor Wilson was born in Calloway County in the little community of Fidelity, in the late 1870's time frame. He was, for many years, an instructor at WKU. He wrote several interesting books, among which is the one which is the subject of this posting. In this particular book, Professor Gordon has a number of delightful sketches of people who lived in or around Fidelity. In some cases, he gives their names, while, in others, he does not. In this post, I am going to list some of the names I have found in the book, as I know that some of our subscribers are descended from, or related to, these people. I cannot post the sketches themselves(which would be far too long for our limited space, in any event), due to copyright considerations, but if you see one of your ancestors in this list, and you would like the full text of the sketch itself, send a message to me by private e-mail, and I will send image files of the pages from the book itself. The book, of course, has been out of print since about 1947, and Professor Gordon died many years ago. Here are some of the names found in his work: Joseph & Mary Maddox (came from NC in a covered wagon - sketch is about Mary) Jesse Maddox ( son of Joseph & Mary above) "Bud" Smith (Blacksmith) John Hawkins Bill Warren "Mill Jimmy" (no surname given, but this man was well know by this name, as he was associated with a mill at Devil's Point on the Blood River - some of our subscribers may know who this man is, and can advise me) Peter Rowlett (this sketch is primarily about the African-Americans associated with the Rowlett family, and there is an entire chapter on the African Americans in and around Fidelity, although few names are shown, and never any surnames) Sulphur Springs Church - this is a chapter on this Church and its influence on Professor Wilson. ~~~~~~~ There may be a few requests that some of you have pending with me that may carry over to tomorrow, as there was a large response(as is always the case with Graves County posts)to last night's message. Those requests will be completed before the end of the day tomorrow. -B ============================================================================

    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am kicking off this new week with something a little out of the ordinary. Rather than having a data posting today, I am going to offer image files of some of the early photos which I have collected over the past 30 years. This group represents some from Calloway County(unless otherwise noted). These are photos which are identified in some fashion. Most are in quite god condition, although one or two have faded. Obviously, I cannot post an identifier for the many photos I have which are unidentified. I do plan, however, at some future time, to establish a web site which will carry about 5-10 such unknown images, changing each month, with the hope that someone can identify the people in such unknown photographs. Subscribers to the JP List will be invited to submit their early photos(by "early", I mean generally pre-1920) for inclusion on the page. Subscribers to the JP & Calloway lists can request an image file(in JPG format)for a photo listed below by sending a message directly to me(not to the List, please). Because of the size of these image files, I would ask that no more than 3 images be requested. As always, your assistance in not resending this message back to me with the request continues to be appreciated. There will be no data post tomorrow, as I will be out of town most of the day. I'll stop by and confirm that at some point tomorrow evening, however. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Photo Images - JP Group # 1 Marshall, Miss Edna - 1908 (Photographed in Paducah) Ryan, Henry (ca.1895) Lester, Richard & Mark (sons of James Lester) - young children Hay, Ruth "Michaux Children" Hamlin, Miss Millie (ca. 1910) "Mrs.Amerine & Family" (ca.1905) Holland, Fred (baby - ca 1906) Vance, Miss Nettie (ca 1895) "Mrs.Berkley" (tintype - ca. 1870) Brandon, Washington & Wife (ca 1900) Hay, Virginia & Frances (children - ca 1915) Diuguid, Annie (baby - ca 1908) Coleman, ------ (ca 1900) Malugin, Ruth (ca 1912 - child) Skaggs, Charles Harden & Wife Charity Michaux (ca 1895) "Bertha Futrell's Children" (ca 1913) Flack, S.A. & | Flack, "Mrs." | Tupelo, MS (ca 1907) (3 Images) Flack, Orville (Child) | ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I will stop by tomorrow with another bio in this series.                                                 -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - "History of Calloway County" - Thomas W. In 1914, he engaged in the grocery and hardware business, which line he has continued to handle all these years, making him, in point of service, one of the oldest grocerymen in the City of Murray. On October 9, 1890, he was married to Miss Laura J.Johnson, and they are the parents of five children, as follows: G.C.Fain, Brownsville, Tennessee, D.E. at Lynn Grove; Mrs. Vera Hale, Murray; Miss Lottie, at Jackson, Tenn., and Mrs. Nova Overby, Murray. 2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Here is another biography from the publication entitled, "History of Calloway County, 1931", as published originall by the Murray Ledger. Our subject today is Charles Hill Bradley. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Charles Hill Bradley "Mr. Charles Hill Bradley, merchant and owners of Eggner's Ferry on the Tennessee, was born Aprilo 16, 1867 at Woodville, in Ballard County, the son of Dr. Eddie Bradley and Mrs. Nannie Ryan Bradley, deceased. Doctor Bradley died while Charles was a mere infant, but his mother died in 1926 at an advanced age. At an early age, with his widowed mother, they removed to Murray where the subject obtained and education from Mrray Male & Female Institute, in the meantime devoting all his spare time to clerking in the store of his uncle, Mr. Nat [Nathaniel Hill] Ryan, Sr. Charles Hill Bradley has been a worker all his life. He never finds time to stop, except for a minute, to shake hands. For 29 years, he was a grocery salesman onthe road, being connected with, and owning interests in, the wholesale grocery concerns of Noble & Overby, and later with Covington Brothers of Paducah. After 29 years of service, he resigned his psition and purchased an interest in Eggner's Ferry and the store down there, making daily trips back to his home. In 1894, Mr. Badley was united in marriage to Miss Susie Crews, and to this union four children have been born, as follows: Charlie Crews Bradley, who died January 19, 1919; Rob Bradley, distract manager for Foodtown Kitchens, Inc.; Miss Frances Bradley, a teacher in the Rogers Clark School of Paducah; and Edward, a member of the firm of Houston-Bradley, doing a general insurance business in Murray. Their only grandchild, Rob Tilghman Bradley, lives with them and attends the Murray High School. They live in an elegant home on West College Street in Murray. Mr. Bradley is a Methodist, a Mason and a Democrat. He has been a member of the Murray School Board, but never asked for elective office. Charles Hill Bradley is perhaps the best known traveling salesman in Western Kentucky. For nearly thirty years he has made his territory over the roads in bugies and otherwise, and quit his job just about the time our highways were ordered built. But the roads were never too bad for him tomake his regular trips. Mr.Bradley is one of Calloway's most prominent and successful businessmen, a worthy and progressive citizen and a kind, loving and devoted father." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++

    3. Hi Mary, Found these two records on the LDS 1880 census disk. I looked up the original page on Ancestry, and it does look like it says "R.T.", not R.J. I can send you the image on your e-mail if you like. The other info you mentioned seems to fit. There is also a Henry Clark, age 24, a few houses away from the Todd family.
