My friends - I have had so many requests for the snippet concerning Pleasant "Ples" Warf, which was recently offered in the Calloway County Early Newspaper Snippets series that I have decided to post it to the lists today. Mr. Warf claimed to be 121 years old. He lived in Marshall County, although the snippet appeared in the Murray Ledger newspaper. Mr. Warf claimed to have been born in 1781, and that his father was a Revolutionary War soldier. Here is the snippet: Murray Ledger 28 Aug 1902 "As little as has been said about it, no doubt Marshall County has living within her bounds one of the oldest men, if not the very oldest in the whole country. Old 'Uncle Ples Warf', who now lives at the county poor house at Glade, claims that he will be 121 years old next October. He says his father was in the siege of Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781, which battles closed the Revolutionary War. 'Uncle' Ples claims his parents always told him he was born on the day the Battle of Yorktown was fought, October 19, 1781, which makes him 120 years and ten months old. Mr. Warf moved to this country from Virginia 40 years ago and lived for many years in the Magness section of the County until 5 years ago, when he became unable to work, and was sent to the county poor house, where he could be cared for. His wife died and year or so before he went to the poor house, thus leaving him, 'old, lonely and in the way', as he has no relative in this country. He has been an honest, hardworking, and quiet citizen, having never made any pretensions religiously until right recently, he having been baptized and brought out. Mr. Warf is a good old-time citizen and possesses good intellectual facilities, but was educationally limited. He has two sons, one of whom is now living, but not near here. We have heard him tell how he and his wife Gennie, 'took up together'. Indeed, 'Uncle Ples' is a wonderful man. He is small in stature but possessed of a strong constitution, but has a club hand, it having been burned and drawn so that he has but little use of it." My late grandmother met Pleasant Warf in 1901, when she and my grandfather were first married. He(Warf) was selling off some farm items and they went up to Marshall Co. to look at them. I don't know if they bought anything, but Grandmother told me several times that my grandfather told her that Mr. Warf was born during the American Revolution. Grandmother said that, at the time, she thought Grandfather was just joking, but apparently, if Mr. Warf was correct about his age, there was truth to it. It is too bad that a biographer did not interview him - I can just imagine what a couple of hours with him would reap. I will return tomorrow with another in the KY Appeals Court cases series. -B ================================================================================

My friends - I am going to bring another segment of the Jackson Purchase Vignettes series to the lists today. I had planned to and this piece over the weekend, but time did not permit. Beyond that, I have been inundated with requests for page images from the latest offering from Graves County Order Book G, and filling all of those will require another 48 hours. It requires a great deal of time to get all of those pages uploaded and on their way, and, as a result, I have not been able to prepare a data posting. Hence, the vignette. Our subject is from Calloway County and is Dr. James Glen Hart, a well known physician. He was the father of Pocahontas "Hontas" Hart, who was shown on the last Calloway County Newspaper Snippets segment, and for whose snippet I had many requests. Tomorrow, we will get back down to business on data from McCracken County. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes - Calloway County - Dr. James Glen Hart "James G[len] Hart, MD, Calloway County, is a son of James M and Dolly (Marsh) Hart. He was born July 5, 1849, in Henry County, Tennessee, and was brought when a year old to this County by his parents. He was reared on a farm and received what education was afforded by the common schools. At twenty years of age, he began the study of medicine under the instruction of Dr. E[arly] B[rent] Curd of this County, and a year later attended the Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio, from which institution he graduated in 1873. Returning to Calloway County, he began the practice of his profession, locating in the town of Murray in 1880, and has rapidly attained a leading position, enjoying an extensive, lucrative practice, as well as the esteem of the community. Educational matters receive from him a hearty support, as well as the temperance cause. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and with his wife a member of the Christian Church. He married May 15, 1873 to Miss Sarah E[lizabeth] Thompson, daughter of Abraham Thompson of this County, which union has been blessed with four children: Abraham B[rent], Pocahontas, Prince A[lbert] and Fannie." -History of Kentucky, Illustrated - Edition I Todd/Perrin/Kniffen Louisville: F.A.Battey Publishing Co, 1885 [NOTE: Dr. Hart and his wife had several other children beyond those shown in this sketch] ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My friends - Today, we are moving over to Calloway County to continue our review of some of the early newspaper snippets from that County. These snippets cover primarily the 1900 - 1906 time frame. Subscribers can obtain the full text of a snippet in the listing below by sending a request to me. Given the lengthy nature of some of these snippets, I must request that no more than 3 items be requested. These snippets can cover just about anything from arrests for "bootleg whiskey" to death announcements, obituaries, births, visiting relatives and friends - and just about any other subject area. They may be valuable as a genealogical source of information, or they may simply give us an insight into life in the JP in another time and era. As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is appreciated. My friends - In looking at some of my transcribed records, I came across some Calloway County Vital Statistics birth records for the year 1878 which I have not yet posted here. So we are beginning this week with the first of several posts that will be necessary to cover all of these. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth record shown below by sending a request to me. The datasets for these records usually show the date of birth, gender of the child, if not obvious and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother, as well as the birth state for each parent. My friends - I am stopping by today to say that I have converted another item from one of the several hundred old 5" floppy "miscellaneous files" that I have from back in the "olden days", and it is now ready for distribution. This file is the Forrester Cemetery in Calloway County. This Cemetery contains the following known surnames: Alexander, Haley, Callahan, Cruce. Cohoon, Falwell, Farris/Farries/Faris, Witherspoon, Hart, Tutt, Smith, P'Pool, Osborn, Outland. Phillips, Payne, Patterson, Houston, Hunt, Lewis, Miller and Mitchell. The cemetery is not a large one, with perhaps 60-70 known burials. The earliest birth year which I noted was 1788. The earliest death year was 1831, so it is an old one. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the List please). Ask for the "Forrester Cemetery File". The file is available in either plain text or Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File(PDF) format. I will send the file in plain text, unless PDF is requested. The file will be sent as an attachment to an e-mail message. Should this be unworkable, the file can also be sent in the body of an e-mail message, although this may result in the skewing of the columnar alignments. If this mode is needed, please specify that the file should be sent as a *straight e-mail message*. -B ============================================================================== ===
Many thanks to those who sent me information about the Ivy Cemetery near Murray, Calloway Co, KY. I went this past weekend and found even more than I expected to find! Robert C. Ivie's grave is right next to the graves of John Ivie & Elizabeth E. (Wells) Ivie and their daughter Julia Ivie. The proximity adds credence to the probability that Robert C. is a son of John & Elizabeth. We have recently discovered that Robert is my g-g-grandfather and the father of my g-grandfather William A. Ivie. I knew these four graves were supposed to be there, but in looking at the headstones nearby, I discovered two more g-g-grandparents! William A. Ivie's wife was Nancy E. Wells, and we knew from her death certificate that her parents were R. M. & Nancy (Thomas) Wells but that was absolutely all we knew about them. Well, right behind the Ivie graves were the graves of Rubin M. and Nancy Wells! I confess, tears came to my eyes! I suspect that this property was originally Ivie property. The four Ivie's and Rubin & Nancy Wells are the oldest graves there. The cemetery was very well kept, so maybe a descendant still owns the property. Would anyone know anything about this? I'll transcribe the dates I copied and post them later this week. I got home too late last night to do this. Also, there were a number of other families represented, some that we have seen in our own research. Again, thanks to all those who helped! Sylvia

My friends - Today, we are moving over to Calloway County to continue our series on early newspaper snippets. These snippets are in the 1890's time frame, and may contain anything from a notice of someone visiting in Calloway County to birth, marriage and death announcements or obituaries (there is a difference between the two - a death announcement generally gives few details - an obituary lists relatives, etc.), criminal proceedings, and many other subjects. A snippet may contain some real gems of information or be only an indication of the times in which our forebears lived. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full text of a snippet shown below by sending a request to me(not to the list, please). Given the length of some of the snippets, I will ask that requests be limited to no more than two (2) snippets. I'm looking for information on Robert C. Ivie, born early 1820s. Also, if anyone has access to a 1900 census index, I would appreciate it you could tell me if he is listed in Calloway Co. He could be listed under either Robert or Bob. Thanks. Sylvia
My friends - I am dropping by today to post another recapitulation of the "Miscellaneous Files" which are available for distribution. Since we do have a number of new subscribers to the JP List, as well as the other county lists which I host(plus having added the Fulton County List to the "family" of JP county lists which I host), I felt it was again time to do another recapitulation of these available miscellaneous files(which are those that I have so far converted from the several hundred old 5" floppies on which they were originally recorded). They will be shown below by county. More detailed information on the contents of the files can be found by entering the name of the file as a search item on the JP List Archives, located here: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=KYJacksonPurchase-L Subscribers to the lists which I host can obtain a copy of a file shown below by sending a request directly to me(not to the List, please). The file will be sent as a plain-text attachment to an e-mail message, although some are also available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. The plain-text format will be used unless PDF is specified(and if the file is not available in PDF yet, it will be sent as plain text). If attachments are not workable, the file can also be sent in the body of an e-mail message, although this approach will often badly skew columnar alignments, making the file very hard to decipher. Please do not resend this entire message back to me with a request. Please allow 48 hours before querying me about a file you have requested. My friends - Today, we are completing one of our longest running series - the Marshall County Vital Statistics birth records for the years 1852-1861. This is the 70th - and final - segment in that group. The Calloway County List is also included in this mailing as there is an announcement pertaining to that County later in this message. Subscribers to the JP and Marshall lists can obtain the full dataset for a marriage in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets usually contain the date of birth, the gender of the child if not obvious, and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother. Your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is greatly appreciated. I am now fully caught up on the requests for the Mayfield First Baptist Church centennial history. If I missed anyone, please let me know. The huge response to that offering leads me to believe more strongly that our subscribers are interested in the history of these institutions in the JP region and I will be particularly vigilant as we go along to try to bring these sorts of things to the lists I host. Our friend Kay Martin, who hosts one of the Martin lists, is engaging some of the Martin descendants in a DNA project, and she has asked me to post the URL for the website here for those descendants of the James Martin/Priscilla Davis line that we have as subscribers on the JP and Calloway lists. The URL is: http://www.geocities.com/henrymartin_dna/index.htm I should point out that I have no personal involvement, beyond that of a natural interest in this new technology, in this project or its entities or with the individuals who are sponsoring it. The mention of this project should not be construed, either, as an invitation to begin discussing the pros and cons of DNA testing relative to genealogy. There is an excellent, and very active, RootsWeb based mail list dedicated to those sorts of discussions. Tomorrow, we will move over to McCracken County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County - Vital Statistics Records - Births - 1852-1861 - Part 70 - Conclusion (M)= Male (F)=Female (AA)=African-American (ILL)= Illegitimate Johnson, Nancy R. My friends - Good news - I received the return of my main computer late today and all now seems to be well and working again. For those interested in what the problem may have been - it turned out that Windows XP is compatible with Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Firewall only if those programs are uninstalled from the previous operating system, and then reinstalled in XP. I had both of these under Windows ME, and did not get them uninstalled. I ended up with three firewalls, in effect, blocking access to my broadband connection, and, in fact, even to my analog dial-up. So, for those of you thinking of upgrading to XP - bear in mind that all firewall and anti-virus programs need to be uninstalled before upgrading to XP, and then re-installed again. With the return of my machine, I am beginning to fill the large backlog of image requests from Graves County Order Book G. With more than 100 of them, it will take a few days. I also still have a number of requests from the Marshall County VS birth records that are still in queue. Please bear with me over the next few days, as I work through this backlog. Once I have gone through all of the requests that I have, I will post that fact to the JP List, and anyone who did not receive a response can request the items again. I was unable to post last night due to an outage of my broadband ISP altogether, so today's posting covers the one that was going to go out yesterday. This post is another in our series of early newspaper snippets of Calloway County. This group is primarily in the 1909-1910 time frame. These snippets cover everything from insignificant items such as visitation notices to death notices and obituaries, criminal acts, mental aberrations and many other subjects. One never knows what may be contained in these snippets. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full text of these snippets by sending a request to me. Due to the length of some of these items, I would ask that no more than 3 snippets be requested.
