I did a search on your Reuben Martin Wells. I know this might be a stretch, but the only one that was a slight match is below. You probably already know that the 1850 census for Calloway was by initials only. There have been many frustrating moments for me because of this, but I'll take anything I can get. Many of my Calloway ancestors moved a lot, have you tried Arkansas? That was a popular destination for my Bazzell family in that time period. There were a few Reuben Wells in Arkansas, 1850, also a few Martin Wells. One thing I have learned, my ancestors liked to go by both names alternately, One census would be the first name, then the next they would be going by their middle. Good Luck! Beryl Reid Wells, R. M. If someone has access to a print index to the 1850 Census for Calloway Co, KY, I would much appreciate your help. I'm trying to find Reuben Martin Wells. He isn't to be found in the index for the Ancestry images, and I have scanned every image at Ancestry that I can think of to scan searching for Reuben Martin Wells and his family in the 1850 census in Tennessee or Kentucky. He was in Anderson Co, KY, in 1830; he was in Williamson Co, TN, in 1840, where his father, Reuben Sr., remains in 1850. Reuben Martin moved his family to Calloway Co and should be there by 1850. I can't find him in 1850 or 1860. I do have land records placing him in Calloway Co at least between 1854 and 1865. He died there in 1868. Again, I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks. My friends - Today, we are resuming our review of the 1878 Vital Statistics birth records for Calloway County. Before moving to that, however, I want to update the List on the Graves County Order Book G page digitization process, as I know there is a lot of interest in that project. I am within about a week of completing the rework of the Index, which has proven to be more challenging than had been expected. When that is completed, I will then go back and check each page image to insure that all are present(with one or two exceptions, where the original page itself was missing or impossible to scan) and that the image quality is the best that can be achieved. Once that is completed, I will be ready to ask for several beta testers to assist me in assuring that the CD that will come out of all of this will be readable and workable. Please don't volunteer to be a tester yet, however - I will advise the List when we reach that point. But progress *is* being made, and I am still holding to the goal of having it completed by the end of this month. I worked on that project over this past weekend, which resulted in having no time to prepare and distribute a miscellaneous file, as had been my plan. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets usually include the gender of the child, if not obvious, the date of birth and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother, and the place of birth of each parent. Your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is appreciated. My friends - As we move into regular data posts again, we are returning today to our review of the 1878 Calloway County Vital Statistics birth records. These records are from the year 1878 and were not included in the earlier series that I presented on the Calloway VS records in the 1870's. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets generally contain the date of birth, gender of the child if not obvious, the name of the father and maiden name of the mother and the place of birth of each. As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is appreciated. I will be out of town tomorrow, and there will probably not be a data post as a result, but I will drop by and confirm that if such is the case. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Vital Statistics Records - Births - Supplemental - 1878 (M)=Male (F)=Female (GNG)=Gender Not Given Spencer, James L. Hello, Has anyone had any luck finding records from Woodmen of the World? My gr-grandfather died in 1918 and has one of the "treestump" stones. I was wondering if there are records or pictures available in this area. I will sure appreciate any advice! Thanks! Lisa Kirk-Komnick
I'm new to the Calloway list and am doing research on the Wood/Brown family. In particular, I am looking for information on Feriby/Fernby/Ferobe Wood, nicknamed "Puss" who married Thomas Benton Brown. They were married 10 January 1875 in Weakley County, TN. In the 1900 Calloway Census, Thomas B. Brown and wife "Heriba" and daughter Mary T. were living in the Hazel District. From family stories there were 2 boys also. Puss was the daughter of Miles Wood and Francis Atkins. Puss was the sister of my ggrandfather, Miles Lafayette Wood. I would really appreciate any help with this brick wall! The new "Calloway County Pictorial History Book" has a picture on page 133 of the Falwell reunion. The write up indicates the picture was made in 1910 on the grounds of the Friendship Church of Christ. I have two questions regarding the picture. First, where is the Friendship Church of Christ located, and second, would anyone on the list know who submitted the picture? I am researching the Falwell family and I'm at a standstill. I was very excited when I saw my gg grandmother Lizzie Falwell Williams in the picture along with some of her children. Parthena Elizabeth (Lizzie) Falwell married John H. Williams. He died in 1907 so he was not in the picture. Several of their children were in the picture. One of their daughters Mary Frances married Thomas Garland. Their daughter Mary Katharine married Jasper Maupin. After lots of research I am almost convinced that Lizzie's father was Joseph Falwell. When I received the book, the article mentioned a Joseph Falwell, so maybe I am on the right track. Can anyone on this list shed any light on the Falwell family? I know that there are still Falwells, Garlands and Maupins in Calloway County. I would be great full for any information. Pat in Florida

My friends - I am glad to report that no more "incidents" occurred today, and I have now been able to catch up with requests so that we can move forward with more data. We are moving back over to Calloway County today, to resume our review of the supplemental Vital Statistics birth records for that County for 1878. I should mention again that when I use the word "Supplemental", this does not refer to any official terminology associated with the original records - this merely denotes that we had finished the original VS series for the 1874-1877 time frame, and I discovered later that I had transcribed the remaining year(1878) and that is what is being presented here. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets generally include the date of birth, the gender of the child(if not obvious), the name of the father and maiden name of the mother, and the birth place of each. Would anyone have knowledge of a town in Calloway County by the name of Bolden? I can't find it on the map but I have been told that supposedly my great-grandmother came from that area. If there is not a town by that name, could there be another town that might sound like Bolden? Thank you for any help you can provide. Can anyone tell me where this township was in the mid to late 1800s? Is it near Murray? Also, is there a way to identify where a house in a census record actually was located if there is no street address? Thanks. Sylvia Nash
My friends - I am stopping by to pass along the sad news that our good friend in genealogy, Peggy Brown Chapman, died on November 8th in Lubbock, Texas, which was her home. She had been diagnosed earlier this year with a rare form of liver cancer. Peggy was our resident expert on the Baker, Martin, Gordon and Grayson lines of Western Kentucky, including the Jackson Purchase counties of Calloway and Marshall. Her book, "Bakers of Western Kentucky", is a wealth of information about these families, which will remain as a legacy to all descendants everywhere. She was a valued member of both the JP and Calloway lists, and was always ready to help and anxious to learn more about these families about which she knew so much and loved so well. She will be sorely missed. In September, I purchased the rights to Peggy's book about the Baker, Martin, Gordon and Grayson families of Western Kentucky(mentioned above). She was anxious that her data be preserved and its availability be continued, and I am honored to fill that role. If you wish to read a bit more on Peggy and she her photograph, Kay Martin has placed it on a web site, located here: http://home.att.net/~sunimaze/ I will return later today with a file offering. -B ==========================================================================

My friends - Today we return to Calloway County to resume our review of the additional Vital Statistics birth records for the year 1878. It is probably time for me to mention again that these early VS records are woefully incomplete and inaccurate. Only about 40% of the actual births, marriages and deaths which occurred in the 1852-1859 and 1874-1878 time frame ever found their way into these records, and those that did are often riddled with errors. As a result, they should be used with caution, and carefully compared to any other existing records(Bible, etc.)to form an opinion as to their accuracy. Subscribers of the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets usually include the date of birth, gender of the child, if not obvious, the name of the father and maiden name of the mother and where each was born. My friends - I am stopping by today to pass along an offering for another item from the "Miscellaneous Files" which I have contained on the several hundred old 5 inch floppies that I have from "the early days" of computers, when we had to insert a floppy disk to even boot up the system. This one was particularly stubborn to convert, and required about 3 hours of work, but it finally came out in workable form. Today's item is one for which I have had a number of requests over the past few years - Temple Hill Cemetery in Calloway County. This is a large cemetery with several hundred burials. The earliest known burials are in the 1850's, but the cemetery very likely dates back further, well into the 1840's. The surnames included in the known burials at Temple Hill include Allen, Anderson, Bailey, Barnett, Bates, Baucom, Beale, Biffle, Bishop, Bland, Crisp, Colson, Calhoun, Byars, Cain, Burkeen, Burchett, Brandon, Bowerman, Cullen, Curd, Dixon, Dodd, Futrell, Douglas, Drennon, Duncan, Dunn, Edwards, Eldridge, Elliott, Emmerson, Falwell, Fulcher, Hill, Hicks, Herndon, Galloway, Goodwin, Gordon, Greer, Griffin, Grogan, Hamlin, Hampton, Hardin, Harris, Hartsfield, Holland, Holden, Hopkins, Imes, Jackson, Jones, Lamb, Keel, Keys, Lee, Love, Mahan, Madding, Marshall, Mathis, McCall, McCulley, McDaniel, McKinnie/McKinney, Morris, Miller, Nanny, O'hern, Peeler, Peters, Phillips, Powell, Pryor, Rogers, Ray, Rayburn, Robertson, Ryan, Schroader, Taylor, Tarry, Swindell, Shoemaker, Smith, Stalls, Stroud, Todd, Tolly, Trice, Trevathan, Tubbs, Vaughn, Wade, Wells, Waldrop, Wallace, Washburn, Weatherford, Williams, Woodall, Whitlock and Wolfe. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me, asking for the "Temple Hill File". The file is available in both Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF formats. Plain Text will be supplied unless PDF is requested. The file will be sent as an attachment to an e-mail message. It can be sent in the body of an e-mail message if attachments are not workable, but doing so will often badly skew the alignment of the contents. If the file must be sent in that fashion, please specify that the file is needed as a "Straight E-Mail Message". I should point out, too, that this file contains burials up to about 1966. As a result, there will be some death dates missing, inasmuch as some people born in the late 1870's and onward were still living in 1966. The advantage to having an earlier "reading" of any cemetery is that stones that may have been only marginally legible(but still readable)in the early 1960's might be completely illegible by the time of the next reading, which is usually 20-40 years later, if it is ever done again at all. As a result, if I have to choose between an earlier or a later reading, I will go with the earlier one every time. I hope all have been enjoying a pleasant weekend. -B =========================================================================
My friends - Today we return to Calloway County to continue the review of the additional vital statistics birth records for the year 1878. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the data set for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. I am working through those as rapidly as I can, but completing those requests will probably require several more days, so please bear with me. I will be out of town for a portion of tomorrow, but still hope to bring a data posting to the JP List before the end of the day. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Some Additional Vital Statistics Birth Records - 1878 - Part 2S (M)=Male (F)=Female Smith, Lee Ishmael Carter, Mattie M.
