My friends - I have completed converting another of the items on the several hundred 5" floppies which I refer to as my "miscellaneous files". The file that is now ready for distribution is the 1860 Calloway County Mortality Schedule. The Mortality Schedules were a part of the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census process, and cover deaths that occurred within the 12 month period preceding the census date. The covered period for this file is 1 June 1859-1 June 1860. The information contained for each death includes the name of the deceased, the month of death(no exact day is shown), the age of the individual, where the individual was born, the gender of the deceased and his/her occupation if employed. Surnames included in this file are: Acree, Adams, Allbritton, Barbor, Barnett, Barton, Booker, Bourland, Boyd, Brandon, Bizzell, Carett, Clanton, Cox, Cranfield, Cresta, Elik, Enoch, Epps, Evans, Faucet(t), Fennell, Goodin, Green, Groghan, Groves, Hanneline, Handy, Hankins, Harding, Hart, Henry, Hill, Howard, Jones, Kelly, Kennedy, Kimbro, King, Lasitter, Lawson, Lovier, Marsh, Marshall, Martin, Matherson, McCarty, McDaniel, Meadows, Moore, Morgan, Morris, Neal, O'Neil, O'Reid, Outland, Palmer, Plummer, Portess, Ray, Ross, Schrader, Shadawick, Shearpels, Skinner, Stephenson, Story, Stubblefield, Taylor, Terry, Wrather, Walston, Warneck/Warnick, Wells, Whitnell and Williams. There are also a number of African-American slaves listed, as well. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me(not to the lists, please), These files are available in rich text format and Adobe PDF format. Because of some formatting attributes that need to be maintained, the file will not be available in plain text format. The file will be sent as a rich text attachment to an e-mail message, unless PDF is specified. The entire file will be sent, as time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data on individuals contained within it. Your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is appreciated. -B ====================================================================
My friends - Today, we are beginning a new series of excerpts from the self-written memoirs of a man born in Calloway County. Some introductory material is in order. Joseph Oren Holland was born in Calloway County 17 July 1868 and died in Amarillo, Texas on 22 December 1952. He was the son of George Marion Holland(son of William Marion Holland and Mary Jane Miller) and Margaret Ann Nix(daughter of Riley Franklin Nix and Mary Ann Alexander). Oren Holland married Pearle Hays in 1893. I was acquainted, in a small way, with one of Oren Holland's sons, who operated a successful clothing store here for many years. In 1950, Oren Holland began writing his memoirs, from which the excerpts I will be posting come. A copy of these memoirs, entitled, "One Life" came to me years ago through the efforts of my late cousin, Mary Holland Lancaster, who performed much invaluable research on the Holland and Hay(along others) families, to which she and I both are related. As we go along, I will post excerpts from Oren Holland's remembrances from his time in Calloway County. While not as all-encompassing as Gordon Wilson's folksy narratives, Oren Holland's remembrances paint a good portrait of how life was in the last half of the 19th century. As is now customary, there will be no data posts per se tomorrow or on the weekend, although, if time permits, I may return with another miscellaneous file offering. I will be departing again, late next week, for the Jackson Purchase region, as my wife and I continue to slow process of preparing for our relocation to our acreage in Calloway County at some point next year. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "One Life" -Memoirs of Joseph Oren Holland "I was born in a double log house on the east side of Calloway County, Kentucky on the 17th day of July 1868. At the time my father was engaged in the mercantile business in partnership with my grandfather [Riley Franklin] Nix in the little village of Newburg onthe banks of the Tennessee River. He rode horses back a distance of about five or six miles to and from his place of business each day. When I was some three or four years old, my father built a two room 'box' house on the hill overlooking the log school house of 'Hickory Flat', and it was there that I first began to 'remember things'. Our new home was about a mile or a mile and a half from Father's place of business, but he left early in the mornings and usually returned late in the evenings. People in those days worked hard and lived harder. There were no eight hour days and five day weeks with time and a half for overtime. Neither did there exist any of the simple things as common with us now and luxuries were simply unheard of. Only the barest necessities were obtainable, and even these were few and far between. I remember one evening Father brought home some 'fresh beef' - round steak - and just enough for one meal as there was no way of keeping fresh meat in warm weather except by cooking it immediately. Mother cooked the steak for our evening meal and I stood and watched her, and the smell of that fresh cooking meat was most tantalizing.I had never had 'fresh' steak before and I have never had one since that tasted half so good. Occasionally Father would bring home a 'buffalo' fish from the river and I would watch him skin and clean it, and all the time my mouth would be 'watering'. I was so hungry for something fresh and different. Although Father was in business, we were poor. Everybody was poor and everybody economized to the limit. The commonest things we have today would have been luxury beyond comprehension in those days. May people still used 'tallow dips' for light - when they had a light - but we did have 'coal oil' lamps for the rare occasion when we had company, but for 'home use' we had 'star candles', which, at most, were dim and uncertain. We, also, being in business, enjoyed 'Alligator' matches which were sulphur matches and stunk when lit like the eternal lake of fire and brimstone." ~to be continued~ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My friends - Although we normally begin a new week of data posts on Mondays, I am going to slightly deviate from that schedule today to offer a couple of items from my "miscellaneous files" contained on the several hundred old 5" floppies that I mention from time to time. These files are somewhat different from the norm. There is always a lot of interest in early church minutes. I found that I had, years ago, saved some information from the original Church Book(which has subsequently been lost, as I understand it)from the original Antioch Church of Christ, which was located right on the Calloway/Graves county line and which was founded about 1836 by settlers who were primarily from North Carolina, some of whom had gone to Alabama and then on to the Jackson Purchase. This book of church minutes begins in 1838 and end in 1852. There are some missing pages, but the minutes consist of listings of new members, members who were dismissed, expelled, baptized, etc. The surnames contained in these minutes include Parkhill, Clapp, Jones, Turnbow, West, Nance, Williams, Armstrong, Simmons, Turner, Stroud, Price, Francis, Matheny, Chambers, Kelly, Hainline, Crider, Brush, Drown, Shutts, Lombard, Harris, Hale, Dalton, Thompson, Gray, Doom(s), Pogue and McAbee. Additionally, I have converted a file which contains the names of individuals who were on the federal pension rolls as of 1 January 1883 in Graves and Fulton counties. This file shows the name of the pensioner, the county and post office address for the pensioner, the cause for which the pension was allowed, the amount of the monthly pension and the date of the original allowance. This has many widows of War of 1812 soldiers, as well as some men who were wounded or otherwise disabled, and several "dependent mother" listings. The surnames contained in this file include Abernathy, Adair, Allison, Askew, Austin, Barton, Canter, Chappell, Cook, Davidson, Darrington, Emerson, Entrican, Farris, Heffin, Hunzaker/Hunsaker, Henry, Linder, Molohon, Myers, Nance, Newton, Owens, Peak, Plumbee, Rollins, Shetton, Simmons, Simpson, Smith, Wheeler, Winston and Youngblood. Subscribers to the JP, Calloway, Graves or Fulton lists can obtain a copy of either, or both files, by sending a request directly to me(not to the lists, please)Both of these files are available in rich text format or Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Because of the table attributes in one file and the general formatting in the other, it was necessary that rich text format be used. Any word processor will open an RTF file. Please specify either the "Antioch Church File" or the "Pensioners" file, or "Both Files" when sending a request. The file(s) will be sent as a rich text attachment to an e-mail message, unless PDF is specified. The entire file(s) will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the files and extract data on individuals. Your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is, as always, appreciated. Tomorrow, we will focus on Ballard County. -B =====================================================================

My friends - Our first data posting for this week will return us to our review of newspaper snippets from Calloway County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These snippets today are from the 1907-1910 time frame. These snippets may contain re[ports of anything from simple visitation notices to criminal activities, marriages, births, death notices and obituaries, and the occasional lengthy memorial to a deceased individual. The information of genealogical importance varies from snippet to snippet, but each one is a brief glimpse into an earlier time. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the texts of a snippet contained in the listing below by sending a request to me. Because of the length of some of the snippets, I do ask that no more than three (3) items be requested. Your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is very much appreciated. Tomorrow's posting will be one of my "Question and Answer" communications. I try to do this once or twice a year. I note questions which are asked of me through the year and, as tenured subscribers know, I pool those questions into a single posting, with the answers. That is coming tomorrow. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Continued Adams, Sallie (funeral) Keel, William (birthday party) Skinner, Zelma (death) Wilson, Boyd Meek | Swift, Myrtle B. |wedding Alexander, Rev. My friends - On this final evening of my visit to the JP region, our posting will come from the JP Vignettes series, drawn primarily from the biographies in the Battle/Perrin/Kniffen work, "History of Kentucky Illustrated". Our subject is Dr. Thomas H. Curd, born in Calloway Co. I spent several hours today at the Marshall County Courthouse, in the Archives area, which is coordinated by the Marshall County Genealogical & Historical Society. I visited with our good friend, Frances Farmer, who is President of that organization, and with several of her colleagues, and I was reminded again by my visit of what an outstanding archive of materials is contained in this collection. Many original documents from Marshall County are available(I found, quite by accident, an Equity Court case file of about 200 pages that had been eluding me for some time), as well as some hundreds of books and other materials on surrounding counties in KY and IL and other states, plus microfilm and many other types of records. Those who may visit the Marshall County Courthouse should not fail to see the archives, which are open from 9 to 3 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. As is now customary, there will be no data posts per se tomorrow or on the weekend. Since I will be travelling, there will be no miscellaneous files offered during this time. We will resume normal postings on Monday. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jackson Purchase Vignettes - Calloway County - Dr. Thomas H. Curd "Thomas H. Curd, MD, was born in Murray, Calloway Co., Ky., on January 3, 1849, and is the third in a family of eight children born to James H. and Elizabeth L. (Frazer) Curd, the former a native of Wadesboro, Calloway County, and the latter of Columbia, Adair County. They are of Irish and Scotch-Irish descent respectively. James H. Curd was married in Adair County and immediately returned to Calloway, where he followed tailoring until about 1861, with the exception of a few years he engaged in merchandising at Murray. During a part of the time he was also engaged in agricultural pursuits in connection with his other business, on a farm of 360 acres, which he inherited from his father and still owns. For several years also he was a jailer of Calloway County. In 1872 he moved to Adair County, where he bought another farm of 140 acres, one mile north of Columbia on the Campbellsville pike, upon which he now resides and is successfully cultivating. He belongs to no church or secret order, but Mrs. Curd has been from early life a devout member of the Old School Presbyterian Church. Dr. Curd received a good classical and scientific education in the schools of his native county and at the Columbia College. For the first two years after attaining his majority he was employed on the home farm, after which he was engaged as salesman in a drug store at Columbia for another two years. He was then elected marshal of the town of Columbia, and held that position for something over a year. He then commenced the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Melvin Rhoel, of Columbia, and in 1877 commenced his medical course at the medical department of the University of Louisville, graduating with distinguished honors in the spring of 1879. He has since practiced with success at Columbia, with the exception of fourteen months, when he was located at Camp Knox, Green County. Dr. Curd married December 17, 1884, Miss Mattie, daughter of William Moses, of Louisville, where she was born in 1680. The Doctor is a member of the Old School Presbyterian Church, and his wife of the Missionary Baptist Church; he is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is a Democrat." -History of Kentucky, Illustrated Battle/Perrin/Kniffen Louisville: Battey Publishing Co., 1886 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
My friends - Today, we move to Calloway County, where we will finish with the 1878 Vital Statistics birth records. Subscribers to the JP and Calloway lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets usually contain the date of birth, the gender of the child if not obvious, the name of the father and maiden name of the mother, and where each parent was born. As always, your assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request continues to be appreciated. This segment concludes all of the early Calloway County vital statistics, in the1852-1859 and 1874-1878 time frames. The earlier time period was covered in posts some 4 or 5 years ago and are available in the searchable JP List Archives.
