    3. The legal age to marry in 1817 was 21. The bond should be signed by the prospective bridegroom and his bondsman (or surety). Perhaps the bondsman was his father, but that does not mean that the bridegroom was under age 21. Usually there is a consent note signed by a parent or guardian if the person was under age or there will be a written notation on the bond that the parent or guardian was present and gave consent.     3. When my great-grandmother, Josie Hancock Virgin, married the 2nd time to W. H. Williams, she gave herself permission to wed since she was over 2lyears of age. There was also a Bond and Joel Trice signed as Surety.
