Chalk level, according to THE DAWSON SPRINGS PROGRESS July 25, 1974 Centennial Edition VILLAGE FIRST CALLED CHALKLEVEL Dawson Springs History Has a Colorful Past As in the case of most locations in this country, Indians were the first inhabitants of the area which is now Dawson Springs. The earliest reference to a settlement where the city now stands is given in the first edition of Collin's History of Kentucky. The settlement is described as being located 18 miles southwest of Madisonville and four miles southwest of Charlestown. The village was called CHALKLEVEL, It is now Dawson Springs, Hopkins Co, Ky. Located on the Hopkins-Caldwell Co. line..
