    3. It was revolt by tobacco farmers in Western Kentucky and Tennessee between the years of 1904 and 1909 against James B. Duke of North Carolina and his tobacco empire.......Dr. Amos was a country doctor who led a organized "secret fraternity" of farmers from Kentucky and Tennessee in a "war" against the too low buying prices set by the "Duke Trust" for the tobacco raised by the farmers. Duke set prices so low on what he would pay, that they couldn't make a profit on which to live or enough money to replant their tobacco crops. The "Night Riders" wanted all the farmers to stand together and not sell their tobacco for those low prices, hoping to make Duke have to raise the prices, and when a farmer didn't go along, the "Night Riders" would raid and destroy their crops. Bill Cunningham wrote a book titled "On Bended Knees" that tells all about the "wars" and the trial that followed.
