Thanks for the help. I have found the boards somewhat confusing and I thought maybe it was just me, and lack of patience. I am reading "On Bended Knee" by Bill Cunningham, about the tobacco wars in Western Ky. and the Night Riders. It is very interesting. There is a list of names in the back of the book, of people mentioned. If anyone wants me to look up a name I'll be glad to. Excerpt from "The Leader", Princeton, Ky. Feb. 9, 1940 Editors Note-- The Leader is greatly indebted to Miss Quincy Mitchell, Durant, Okla., for some interesting data on early Caldwell County history that is self-explanatory. This data is authentic, and is well worth preserving, as it is a record of those brave pioneers, frm this, and what is now Lyon County (formerly a part of Caldwell County) who volunteered their service in the Mexican War, many of whose descendants reside in this vicinity. Attention is called to the similarity of the names of those former soldiers to those that are quite familiar to present day residents of this community. Editor of the Leader Princeton, Ky. Dear Mr. Catlett, I have been thinking for some time that it might be interesting to your readers to have a few facts and experiences relating to the Mexican War published in your paper. These facts were obtained from my uncle, James F. Mitchell, who was a member of the company of soldiers who enlisted from Princeton and the surrounding country. The enclosed roster fo the volunteers from Caldwell contains names of many who descendants are still living in Princeton and vicinity. As a war this conflict with Mexico was not one of the top ranking wars in the history of our country. Nevertheless many lives were sacrificed among the youngmanhood of the South. Some from battle casualties, but more from diseasesincident to the tropical climate and lack of proper food and medical care.Kentucky shared in this sacrifice, Princeton and Caldwell County contributedtheir portion as an offering upon the altar of Mars. I have heard my uncle tell of that day in the autumn of 1847 when the CaldwellCounty Volunteers assembled in Princeton to begin their long and wearisomejourney to Mexico. On that momentous day so long ago, a large crowd hadgathered to see the “boys” off to war. The soldiers were congregated on thelawn of the Court House (not the present Court House, but the one that wasburned later during the War Between the States). There they heard the usual plaudits and flights of oratory from speakers who expectedto remain at home. When the moment of departure arrived a three volley salute of musketry was fired. The soldiers marched around the Court House, then amidst cheers and farewellsnot unmixed with tears, set off afoot for Edyville, the nearest point where aboat could be taken to go down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. There an ocean going vessel was boarded that took them to Vera Cruz, Mexico. The crossing was rough and many of the soldiers suffered from sea sickness. Myuncle said his friend and neighbor, Erastus Pickering, was one of theseunfortunates and frequently declared that he wished he had stayed home and nottried to be a hero. The troops from Princeton never reached the battle front as the fighting waslargely over before they arrived at Mexico City. The they suffered otherhardships, tropical heat and illnesses which caused many deaths. The Caldwell Guards spent nearly a year before being sent back home. To while away the tedium of waiting to get back home the boys wrote long letters to theirrelatives and friends. Some of the company, my uncle, one of that number, owingto their limited skill in letter writing, detailed that undertaking to his friend,Patrick H. Lang, of eastern Caldwell County, who was quite a scholar for hisday and time and had a gift and skill in penmanship and letter writing. UncleJames said in later years Mr. Lang moved to Illinois, studied law, enteredpolitics, and became a man of considerable prominence. The Caldwell troops were sent home by a different route. I think it was across theIsthmus of Panama and around by New York. They were mustered out at Louisville,Ky. in 1848. This list of names of Caldwell Volunteers was copied from a muster roll belonging to my uncle who was a member of the company. The roster is dated October 23, 1847. Group, Since the team up of the RootsWeb boards and those sponsored by Ancestry.com I have been totally confused by just where they are or even how to use them. This morning I have spent some time trying to figure out how to bring up what you want and how to use them and I will share what I have found out about these boards. This is not all inclusive but is just what I have been able to determine so far. I believe you do now have to be a registered user. It is still free to those who wish to use the boards but usage does require a member name and password. Once you have become a registered member you are given the opportunity to login each time by clicking on your user name and if you click ON save my password this login process is much easier. The basis address that will fit into an E-mail for a quick link is: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam from this point you are given these options: Canada Mexico United States Click on the words United States New board comes up with these options: Special States Click on the word States New board comes up with 50 states Click on the word Kentucky New board comes up but this one is slightly different. Here you are given an option of the basic file of the counties or a quick link to other KY files. For example you will find a link to Sandi Gorin's Kentucky Biographies, Sandi Gorin's Kentucky Research Tips, Sellers' Western Kentucky Obituaries and others. Click Counties and a new board comes up with all the KY counties, Here click on whatever County you would like to research in and that County will come up. When the county comes up this is the spot where it is best to add that County to your favorities or bookmark it. If you do this on your computer you can quick link back to it directly. Ancestry.com also gives you this option of saving your favorities within the login of Ancestry.com. Now this is an important part of these County boards. You will see the words: View Message Type with a dropdown menu arrow. Click on the down arrow and you are given these options: All Bible Biography Birth Cemetery Census Death Deed Immigration Lookup Marriage Military Obituary Pension Queries Will This is important because here you select what type of board you wish to see displayed! You can not bookmark these catagories of the county and if you do not change this for each county you visit you will get the same board type each place you visit. If you have it set to Wills you will only get Wills for each county you visit. If you have it set to All you will get All of what was the most recently posted messages and you may have to go through a lot of obits or whatever to find basic queries or whatever you are looking for. This is also important because this was a plus feature. Places to add more data: such as Marriages, Births, LookUp Request and Offers etc. Also on the County Message Board you will find a circle spot with the words All Boards or Caldwell Board, if you click on Caldwell Board you will get a different type format of Caldwell Messages and I haven't figured out what these are....except older ones?? You will also find a place to post a new message, do an advanced search or visit the next page of whatever message type you have selected. Ken is still adding obituaries for Caldwell and Lyon and much other information in other counties is still being added also. It has become confusion during this merger of listings, but many people are still working hard to put information out there. I know some of you are well ahead of me on how to use these boards and I hope you will share with the group any helpful tips you may have as some of it is most confusing. Vicki
Hi Caldwell & Lyon Listers, The Obits are being posted again, I think we backed up 20 yards and punted, but we must live with what we have.... (Copy and paste into your address browser at top of page the two line addresses below in the following order) 1 Copy, then paste the top line into your address browser 2 then copy and paste the second line into your address browser 3 click go on your browser 4 NOTE: when you click, the first ancestry/rootsweb message board, you will be required to register..then it will take you to the obit page. 5 after you get to the obit page, add the address to your favorites or bookmarks.. 6 NOTE: the counties are named in each URL except in Trigg (the last address), you must add sellers instead of trigg.. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam. usa.states.kentucky.counties.caldwell http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam. usa.states.kentucky.counties.lyon http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam. usa.states.kentucky.counties.hopkins http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam. usa.states.kentucky.counties.webster http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam. usa.states.kentucky.counties.crittenden for West Ky. sellers (Trigg County Obits) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam. usa.states.kentucky.sellers Hope this helps, Ken G. \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ----oOOo-(_)-oOOo----McGillekehr ********************************************************************** *****Your kygenweb homepages are***** CALDWELL http://home.hiwaay.net/~woliver/caldwell.html LYON http://home.hiwaay.net/~woliver/lyon.html TRIGG http://www.kyseeker.com/trigg/index.html **********************************************************************

Would appreciate a lookup in the Caldwell County Cemetery Books on a Dabney P. Terry who died in Princeton, Kentucky about 1871. Any assistance will be appreciated as I only have one of the cemetery books which covers another part of the county. Thanks in advance. Hank
I'm trying to identify the family of my lineal ancestor Reuben Curry, born VA in January 1811. Reuben is first enumerated on the 1830 Bedford County TN Census. In 1850 (p127) he is still enumerated in Bedford County TN, 5th Civil District, as follows: Reuben 39 VA farmer Frances 37 NC [UNK maiden name] Sarah J. 10 TN Susan 7 TN Mary F. 5 TN James H. 3 TN Reuben is next enumerated on page 552 of the 1870 Caldwell County KY, Tennessee Precinct, as follows: Reuben 59 VA farmer F.T.S. (female - partially illegible) 57 NC Evidently Frances died, for in about 1878 Reuben married a widow named America Mitchell and together they are enumerated on page 105B of the 1900 Caldwell County Census (Bucksnort Precinct) as follows: Reuben b. VA Jan 1811 farmer [both parents born VA] America b. IN Mar 1824 [father b. KY; mother b. GA] As indicated by the following obituary American died in 1901: [Cadiz Record Jan 1901] AMERICA CURRY ~ One of Caldwell's Oldest And Most Beloved Women Died Last Friday. The death of Mrs America Curry removed one of Caldwell's oldest and most beloved women. Her death was due to the infirmities of old age. She was the wife of "Uncle" Reuben Curry, one of the oldest citizens of Caldwell county. Her death is greatly regretted by all of her acquaintances, especially those who lived near her and knew her best. She was a Christian lady and member of the Christian church at Cross Roads. Her funeral and burial took place at Mt. Hebron Saturday. She was the widow Mitchell at the time of her marriage to Mr Curry twenty-three years ago. Two children are left to mourn her death besides her aged husband, who is now in his ninety-fourth year. The children are, Edward Mitchell and Mrs Riz Claxton, of Denver, Col. I would appreciate any information or leads on Reuben Curry (and his first wife Frances) either in VA, TN or KY. In particular I would like to know when he died so that I might obtain a copy of his probate information or obituary so that I might find out something about him. One possible clue to his family might be the enumeration of a Henry Curry on page 26 of the 1850 McNairy County Census. Henry was also born in VA and has a son named Reuben. In 1850, Henry's family is enumerated as follows: Henry Curry 61 VA farmer Susan 48 VA Reuben 18 TN Brice 16 TN [male] Sarah 14 TN Mary 13 TN James 12 TN Susan 10 TN William 6 TN Allen 4 TN Thanks for any comments. I was given some pictures that came from either my grandmother's or my aunt's trunk. (they lived together) The people in many of them are unknown to me but one picture had something faintly written in pencil on the back. I scanned it into my computer, enhanced it and enlarged it and it reads: Bertha Baird Grandmother Hearn Grandfather Hearn The picture was taken someplace in KY - the city part was torn off of the label. All the other photos were taken in Fulton, KY or Paducah, KY or Paris, TN. I posted this on some TN lists and I received a request from Ann MOORE in Union City, TN for the photo. I enhanced it and repaired the scratches, etc. and emailed it to her. Yesterday I received a phone call from Ann and she said it was her great grandmother and great grandfather and she was so happy. Now we are trying to figure out how we would be connected. Is there anyone on this list that would have info in their databases on: Wilson A HEARN Sara "Sally" BAIRD HEARN Their daughter was Mary Jane HEARN who is believed to have married a BAIRD and had Bertha BAIRD - the girl in the picture. Wilson A. HEARN's will leaves $500 to Bertha BAIRD apart from what is left to his descendants and/or their descendants. And Bertha BAIRD lived with them at the time of Wilson's death. It was really a great feeling to find out I'd provided Ann with her great grandparents' picture. She said she nor any of her cousins had any photos of them. Now she has assigned me the project of finding out how we are related through the MOORE line. LOL So if anyone out there has a clue, please help me.
