    1. HB 523
    2. Kenneth E. Gilkey
    3. Hi Listers, Received this letter this Monday Morn. Would like to share with all.. I wrote to all 38 Ky. Senators over the weekend and so far this is the only reply.. Ken G. ********************************************************************* Kenneth, Thank you for your e-mail regarding House Bill 523. I, too, oppose this piece of legislation for the reason you mentioned. This would be devastating to the people that are trying to trace there ancestors. This would be wrong for Kentucky to pass a law of this nature. Thank you for your concerns. If I can be of assistance to you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me. Joey -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, March 10, 2002 12:09 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Data posted to form 1 of http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/Mailform/pendleto.htm ********************************************************************** ****** *** prefix: Mr First: Kenneth Last: Gilkey street: 409 Hillcrest street2: city: Newburgh state: In zip: 47630 email: [email protected] phone: Submit: Submit Information message: Dear Sir, I am writing in regards to HB523. I am a genealogist. I am originally from Princeton, Ky. and travel a lot back "Down Home" as most genealogists do. Doesnt this translate to a lot of Tourism dollars? Kentucky is a gateway state to the opening of the midwest and west, therefore, her records are very, very important to a lot of genealogist. I am very disturbed about the contents of this bill, HB523, restricting the flow of public records to the extent it is approaching the definition of a police state, with records in the "Top Secret" category. Birth records are a public record, even as in most smaller locations they are published in the daily or weekly newspaper, listing a lot more info than we can get from websites on line. Death records are being published every day in every newspaper in the free world. Yet this bill aims to restrict that piece of information also. I would appreciate your help in defeating this piece of legislation. Very Sincerely Yours, Ken Gilkey

    3. Group, I recently started doing some picture perserving of my family lines with our 'Microsoft Picture It!' program and then yesterday received this tip from Sandi about that same subject. I promise not to send all of Sandi's tips to the list, but if you have any interest in getting those precious pictures organized and saved, as usual Sandi adds some great tips on how to do that. Her basic tips are at the bottom, if you just want to scroll down to that part, but she also starts with a good story we can all probably relate to. 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- Think and Write Globally By Kevin Sheppard [email protected] I am very fond of RootsWeb and the services it offers. I can't help feel though that despite its international reach through the Internet, it remains very USA-centric. Stories in the latest Rootsweb Review begin like: "The 1930 federal census will be released 1 April by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)." .... no they won't -- our (Australian) federal census data is never released. Could you please encourage RootsWeb submitters IN GENERAL to mention the country that they are talking about. Similarly, I constantly encounter surname message board postings such as "John W. Smith m. Mary Jones 1878 KY" -- I am left totally perplexed by the KY. Please don't bother telling me where to find decodes -- rather, please encourage your submitters to think globally. Your American readers would be similarly perplexed if I was to mention "John W. Smith m. Mary Jones 1878 WA" and would be just as disinterested in having to learn the abbreviations (minus country) for the states of Australia. My family originated from the UK [United Kingdom] and appears to have traveled and settled widely during the 19th century. So researchers who limit their requests to something like KY are unlikely to ring any bells for me, whereas if they mention the full city name, state name and country name, they might strike a chord with some old family story. Your Message Boards could assist "the rest of us" by offering a drop- down list of countries that must be clicked before submission, and including a country or country-code in the subject line. Please encourage your readers to think globally, and discourage them from assuming we are all in the same country, and from using two- letter state or county abbreviations. * * * Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 5, No. 9, 27 February 2002 and written by Kevin Sheppard [email protected] ********************************************************************** \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ----oOOo-(_)-oOOo----McGillekehr ********************************************************************** *****Your kygenweb homepages are***** CALDWELL http://home.hiwaay.net/~woliver/caldwell.html LYON http://home.hiwaay.net/~woliver/lyon.html TRIGG http://www.kyseeker.com/trigg/index.html **********************************************************************

Robb, Aaron Williamson KY CSA pension states he served in "16th KY Cavalry". Official number of Sypert's Cavalry was Sixteen. However, Chenoweth's Cavalry was more commonly referred to by men as "16th KY Cavalry" during war. Spaulding, J. B. Captain, Resident of Union Co., KY? ?Thomas, R. B. Enlisted 6 January 1863. Resident of Graves Co., KY. Wallace, J. T. Paroled at Caseyville, KY as a member of the 8th & 13th KY Cavalry. NOTE: Men with question marks beside name stated in KY CSA pension application that they served in Company B, 13th Kentucky Cavalry commanded by Colonel James K. Huey, Captain Ross. This may be a different unit from Sypert's Cavalry. James K. Huey was original Captain of Company K, 1st (Helm's) Kentucky Cavalry which escaped with Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest from Ft. Donelson, TN. NOTE: No muster rolls exist for Sypert's or Chenoweth's Cavalry regiments. The Kentucky Adjutant General's Report lists some of the officers, one company from Sypert's and one company from Chenoweth's Kentucky Cavalry. This list is in addition to and independent of the Report. Therefore, one should reference that book for additional names. A few of the names on this list are also listed in the Report. However, most of the names do not correspond to the company listed in the book. Additionally, the Officers and company designations in the Report do not correspond to prison documents. The one exception was George Wilkerson Sellers who is listed in POW documents and the Adjutant General's Report as the Captain of Company D. In February or March of 1865, Sypert's and Chenoweth's Cavalry units, due to dwindling numbers, were consolidated with the 3rd, 7th, 8th and 12th Kentucky Cavalry units. The 3rd, 7th, and 8th were originally infantry units from Western Kentucky that were mounted in 1864 to serve in Forrest's Cavalry Corp. These units were not a part of the original 3rd, 7th, and 8th Kentucky Cavalry regiments. For the few men that parole records still exist, most are listed as serving in the "8th & 12th Kentucky Cavalry." Needless to say, keeping track of unit designations is extremely confusing and I have doubts as to whether the men even knew for certain. I have seen a Kentucky pension application for a soldier who served under Sypert but listed his unit as the "8th Kentucky Cavalry." SOURCES: 1.
