    3. Regarding the Butler Co, KY Phelps, you might want to take a look also at the Phelps Family Research Blog... check the archives there http://phelpsresearch.blogspot.com/ Also a new Phelps site that is just now gearing up and may have KY info soon. http://pages.suddenlink.net/phelpsdna/Southern_Phelps_Research/index.htm Also there are a number of Butler Phelps named at the Phelps DNA Project. http://pages.suddenlink.net/phelpsdna/DNA_Project/index.htm Regards, Doug Phelps ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2007 8:54 AM Subject: Re: [KYBUTLER] Phelps descendants Here is an idea for you. I'm transcribing some old news papers from Butler Co., KY were there are a lot of Phelps. Would you like to help out. I've all ready done the names indexes, now starting to do the papers so the can be searched online. If you think you'd be interested I'll send you the site. It took me awhile to digest your brainstorming, but I appreciate all of it. I have not did any research on the Phelps connection. The information I have is from a cousin that is deep into genealogy. I will try to respond to some of the questions you have ask the best I can. First, I am not sure that Patsy's parents were John & unknown Phelps. I do have documentation supporting the marriage between Patsy and William dated Sept 21, 1817. Service was performed by a William Anderson in Grayson County. Secondly, I have conflicting birthplaces on Patsy. One source shows Patsy born in Madison Co, KY, while another source shows she was born in Indiania. One source shows she died in Spencer Co, In before the 1850 Census. The 1850 census on Spencer Co did not show Patsy with William. He was a farmer and 53 years old and had his three youngest children living with him. He remarried 3 years later to a Amy Bysum in Clark County. (she is buried at the Baird-Barr cemetery) Julius Chancellor (Jules Chanclor) was William's Father. He was born in 1764 in Goochland VA and married Alvina Sneed in 1792 in Albemarle Co. VA. They had four children: John Chancellor (Chansley) born May 16, 1793, I have his wife as Rebecca C. Abney?? They were married Aug 5, 1812 in Bulter Co. Ky. William & Sally Chancellor (Chansley) were twins and born Jan. 04, 1795. And finally Julius Thomas Chancellor (Chansley) was born June 6, 1799. I show William in Spencer Co. IN when the 1850 Census was Conducted I show William in Warrick Co. IN on the 1840 Census, also there was a William on the Knox Co. Census. He I think he was a little younger. Next, the 1830 Census shows both William and John Chancellor in Knox Co. IN. and I have land records showing John owning land in Clark Co. IL in 1831 and later. The 1820 Census shows William & John in Morgantown, Butler Co. Ky. You ask if William & Patsy lived in Spencer Co, IN and one of my souces show 3 of his children were born in Spencer Co., IN. One last comment: I have found Chancellor spelled as Chansley, Chanclour, Chancler, Chansler, Chanclor, its only in the eyes of the census taker on the spelling. Mary, now I have rambled on long enough so I will sign off for now. 1. Re: [KYBUTLER] Phelps descendants
    2. Rick, you are probably aware that it's hard to sort out all of the Phelpses. I can't identify her in "my" Butler Co. & Ohio Co., KY line. But that doesn't mean she "couldn't be" from that line. She could and I just don't know about her (haven't found evidence of her). Do you have evidence that Patsy's parents were John & unknown Phelps? Several things are going through my mind. Please allow me to brain storm and hopefully something might help. First, ... Madison Co., KY gives me a clue. There was a different unrelated Phelps line (to mine) in Madison Co., KY. They were mainly descendants of Thomas Phelps who died in Albemarle Co., VA in 1751. (see below) 1789: Record in Kentucky - PHELPSes from the Thomas Phelps, d:1751 in Albemarle Co., VA line: Phelps listed, the year and county Anthony 7/14/1789 Jefferson Co. Carey 3/17/1789 Madison Co. Carey 4/17/1789 Madison Co. John, Jr. 1789 Madison Co. John, Sr. 1789 Madison Co. Thomas 7/19/1789 Jefferson Co. The Thomas above, is actually Thomas, Jr. He died in Bullit Co,. KY in 1800. His son, Anthony, and his family generally went on the Hardin and then LaRue Counties. Another son, Josiah, (not listed above) was in Madison Co., KY from at least 1780 until 1835 when he died there. Madison Co. possibilities. Tom, Jr., also had sons named Edwin and Guy, but I have no information for them. The John, Sr., listed in the above 1789 record, was a brother of Thomas, Jr., and a son of Thomas who died in 1751 in Albemarle. He had 12 children, a John, Jr., (also listed above) and a Patsy. But Patsy is too old to be your Patsy. Although her brothers might have named one of their daughters after her (their sister). John, Jr., died in Madison Co., KY in 1798. (see the following record.) Madison Co., KY Tax List for 1792: PHELPS, Cary PHELPS, John, Jr. PHELPS, John, Sr. Secondly, because you have them married in Grayson Co..... we know that some of the Butler Co. Phelps line was in Grayson Co., KY. John Phelps, son of "my" "Old William", was living in Grayson Co., in 1815 until his death after 1838. But, at the time of your Patsy's birth, 7 Aug 1798, John was living in Warren Co., KY, not Madison Co. (see proof below) 1798 - Abstracted from Warren Co., KY Court Orders, 1797-1801, volume 1.: Friday, 6 Apr 1798, same judges present. John KING vs John PHELPS. Jury called: John ANDERSON, John RAY, Danl WALKER, Sneed DAVIS, David WALLACE, Geo MARTIN, John STEEL, John LOGSDON, Robt KELLY, Will WINKFIELD, Rollins ROGERS & Geo CHAPMAN. Perhaps your birth place for her is incorrect, or....perhaps her mother could have been visiting her family (whoever she was) in Madison Co., KY and Patsy happened to be born there during her visit. It did happen to some woman like that. ??? There are inconsistencies but also commonalties. Thirdly, the CHANCELLOR name. David Chancellor married Margaret Phelps, daughter of "Old William in Green Co., KY on 14 Nov 1793. I know of a son for them named John. Was William also one of their sons? (The Spencer Co., IN connection.) Their son, John, married one of his first cousins, Rebecca K. Abney. William could have also married one of his first cousins, a daughter of his Uncle John who was living in the same county, Grayson. I just haven't found any information for John having any children. The 1815 Grayson Co., Tax List won't help because they don't list children. Have you found a marriage bond or license for them in Grayson Co? Did it list her father as John? If so, that is probably enough proof of her. We need to check the 1810 Census carefully and see if John had a daughter that age. David CHANCELLOR lived in Spencer Co, IN in the 1820 Census. Did William and Patsy as well? Well, it looks like I've just talked myself full circle... and taken up a lot of time. Sorry. I shouldn't think on line. :>) Please tell me what your thoughts are. And, maybe someone else will join in the chat with more information. You mentioned a Felix. You probably already know this....but, there was a Butler Co., William PHELPS, who moved to Warrick Co., IN. Also a Felix Phelps in Warrick Co. records: Warrick County Marriage Records, Prior to 1900, P ~ Q: Phelp, Phillip F. to Tennison, Elizabeth Jul 3, 1835 Phelps, Stephen to Wood, Peggy Nov 21, 1836 no return Phelps, William to Leewright, Rugha May 31, 1846 Phelps, Felix to Dukes, Elizabeth Apr 22, 1847 Mary In a message dated 1/29/2007 1:19:48 AM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > Message: 1 > Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2007 10:11:06 EST > From: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [KYBUTLER] Phelps descendants > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" > > Mary, maybe you can provide me some information regarding Patsy Phelps, who > is the daughter of John & unknown Phelps. > As I have it, Patsy was born on 7 Aug 1798 in Madison Co, KY and died > sometime before 1850 in Spencer Co, IN. > She married William Chancellor ( Chancelor) in 21 Sept 1817 in Grayson Co. > Service was performed by a William Anderson. > I am looking for a complete list of siblings between William & Patsy. > I found the 1850 US Census (Spencer, IN) that showed three children, > Margaret, Wilson, & Nancy but not sure if this is the same William and if > so, maybe > other children has grown up and left the family. > One of my cousins suspect William & Patsy had a son in 1818 (July) named > Felix. > Can you assist with Patsy's past? > > Thanks > > Rick Chancellor >

    1. Re: [KYBUTLER] Phelps descendants
    2. Mary, maybe you can provide me some information regarding Patsy Phelps, who is the daughter of John & unknown Phelps. As I have it, Patsy was born on 7 Aug 1798 in Madison Co, KY and died sometime before 1850 in Spencer Co, IN. She married William Chancellor ( Chancelor) in 21 Sept 1817 in Grayson Co. Service was performed by a William Anderson. I am looking for a complete list of siblings between William & Patsy. I found the 1850 US Census (Spencer, IN) that showed three children, Margaret, Wilson, & Nancy but not sure if this is the same William and if so, maybe other children has grown up and left the family. One of my cousins suspect William & Patsy had a son in 1818 (July) named Felix. Can you assist with Patsy's past? Thanks Rick Chancellor

I am also awaiting a reply to a letter sent to the paper in Morgantown to see if I may put the more recent issues (after 1923) online as well. There are many issues that are available before the copyright deadlines however, so I am looking for indexing and transcribing help. Indexing will consist of listing every name mentioned on each page, including in advertisements. National political figures may be left off the index, although the goal is to completely transcribe the articles, at which time the political figures would be mentioned. Transcribing is writing word for word what is in each article. My scans are pdfs right now, although since I have Acrobat Pro I can save them from pdf to whatever image format is most widely desired. Again, I'm looking for volunteers to help transcribe and make it possible for these issues to then be searchable, as well as announcing that I am doing this. I have the images from the first four issues scanned, and more will follow over the coming days as time permits.
