It's been a few years since I've been there, but the Court house folks were nice. You can find lots of information there. Also, you might want to stop in at the library, kind of kiddie corner from the Court house, if I remember correctly. Thay have a geneology section. But, remember their stuff is mostly "passed down" information, not primary sources. Vanity Biography books, etc. Not always accurate, but a place to start. We had a hard time finding a suitable hotel. We stayed outside Glasgow and drove everywhere. Happy hunting. Also, do any of your HOBDYs relate to PHELPS? Mary
I'm planning to go to Butler County next Monday & Tuesday. I found the address online for the county records office at: Butler County Clerk 110 N Main Street Morgantown, KY 42261 Has anyone on this list gone there to do research? If yes, how welcoming are they? Is there anyplace else I should go to? Does the genealogical/historical society have offices? I found nothing about that online, other than a list of what they sell. Is there a reasonably priced hotel/motel near the county clerk's office? Elaine Powell Orlando, Florida Researching ARBUCKLE, HOBDY, JAMES, WARREN (WAREN, WEAREN) in Butler County.

I am interested in the family of Allen Evans of the 1810's. I am trying to see if he may be related to an Allen Evans from KY, who lived in Alabama between during the 1820's through 1850. The age seems to fit being born about 1782, which fits in with the other children listes in RootsWeb WorldConnect: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1572340&id=I297 thanks, Charlie

Is 1807-1876 a good ballpark range for your Moses? There is one buried at "Moses Read Cemetery" if that's the right one, there is no wife buried with him, only him and his children There is no one that seems to meet the description of Mary Rachel Porter Read in the cemetery book. there are many other Moores there and there are 20 pages of cook cemetery listings, so I'll do individuals because they're indexed, but to just go through and pull out the moores (they're not in alpha order) is a lot of work. I'm looking for a marriage record of William Boyd Short, married to Caroline Wariner or Warren. Their only child, Charles McPherson Short. On Charles death certificate it mentions his parents names.. The closest that I can figure out that William probably got married in the late 60's but no later then 1872, because that's when Charles McPherson Short was born. I have not been able to place William Boyd Short on the 1870 census. So I want to think that he was married after 1870 but no later then 1872. Remember Charles was born in 1872. But he could of been married before 1870, and I just can't find him on the census. If you happen to have a marriage record book on hand could you please check the index. for William Boyd Short and Caroline Wariner or Warren. Charlotte
All Phelps whose lines trace to Virginia are encouraged to join the Phelps male Y-DNA Project at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/p/phelps/ With very simple DNA testing of living descendants we hope to uncover the relationships of the various PHelps lines in VA in the 1700s. We are especially interested in the Virginia lines of John Phelps of Goochland d 1747 and Thomas Phelps of Albemarle d 1751 Doug Phelps

There is a reference to a Wayman Porter, African American who was licensed to preach. He lived in Ohio Co, KY and possibly Butler Co. and died sometime between 1870 and 1880. Not sure about the book or any information it may contain. There is a Wayman Porter in the 1870 United States Federal Census > Kentucky > Ohio > Cromwell, it says his occupation was a Cooper. His age was 53 born in KY, with him is his wife Mary born in KY, age 37. Beverly
