Alexander DOWDLE is named on the 1790 US Census for Washington County, Maryland. In 1796, in Nelson County, Kentucky, Alexandre DOWDLE/DOWDALL (marriage records shown both spellings) married Joanna CLOSE. [Joanna "CLOSE" was Joanna FARROW/FARRAR, widow of Jacob CLOSE]. In December 1797 Alexander DOWDAL obtained land in Missouri. In 1799 said land was surveyed. In 1811 John HAGUE claimed to have been assigned the land of Alexander DOUDLE on Bois Bruile [Bois Brule], District of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri .. Claim denied. Earl Fischer's Database of St. Louisans showed Alexander DOWDELL to have died before 1805. Their surname has been found written or transcribed with the following spelling variations: DOWDLE DOWDAL DOWDALL DOWDEL DOWDELL DOUDLE DOWDEN DOWDES John CLOSE, son of Jacob CLOSE and Joanna FARROW/FARRAR was in Breckinridge County, Kentucky in 1800 and 1801. Among his friends and/or relations was Samuel CRAWFORD, Jr. (who later married Theodicia Earl COMPTON), James JENNINGS (husband of Eleanor CRAWFORD), Joseph "Jo" ALLEN (who later married Margaret "Peggy" CRAWFORD), Joseph "Jo" HUSTON (if memory serves me write, I believe he married Margaret "Peggy" ALLEN, sister of Joseph "Jo" ALLEN), Mason CRAWFORD (who later married 1st Molly McCREERY and 2nd Susan Allen TORPE or Susan ALLENTHORPE), and a Mr. STEPHENS. All of the crawfords named were children of Samuel CRAWFORD, Sr. and Jennet MASON.
