We have been together 3 years now and have discussed all sort of possibilities. But we are unanimous that our William MCOY, brother of John, is not the son of Willis MECOY of NC! Yes, I agree that John must be the brother of William, although some of the group prefer to keep him 'alleged'. The web address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mccoyfamilygroup/. There is a John and Margaret MCCOY that crops up in the mid 1700s and I'm not sure where they fit in. We suspect that their daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth, were the ones who married the COBB brothers. My husband is the descendant of John Paine MCCOY and his second wife, Susan KENNEDY. I have Benjamin as the fifth child (b. abt. 1794) of John and Sarah? I have run across the Daniel, James and John MCCOYs that you mention. A pair of brothers, John and James, crop up often. James bought land in NC and settled down there after selling out in VA. I don't have my notes out, but I remember that he and his brother never seemed to fit in with what we knew about 'our' MCCOY family. Daniel was granted 'McCoy's Discovery' 3 Apr 1755, 44 acres (page 983d). This was from book (lost the title) 975.2 H2s at the FHL in Salt Lake. In the 1740 VA census (from FHL) Daniel is listed in Norfolk Co. Just bits and pieces so far. We are going to SLC next week for a 4 day visit to the FHL. I will tell my husband about the book "Revolutionary Patriots of Washington Co., MD'. So far we William MCCOY researchers have not found a connection to the MCCOYs of the HATFIELD-MCCOY feud, although there are members of our group who do have. Please join our MCCOY group. A search of the archives will give you an idea of what we've learned so far and there may be descendants of John and Sarah and Benjamin as current members. There are 4 or 5 of us who are working on William MCCOY specifically, and anything we find about William will pertain to John! Best wishes, Judy California
