Papers from the National Archives, Washington, D.C., show the same date of discharge and his discharge record is under the casualty list. James Duncan enlisted for three years beginning in 1776. The camps are sometimes named: White Plains, Camp Fish Kill, Second River, and Valley Forge. His commanders on these records were Captain William Heyser, Lieutenant Colonel Ludwig Weltner, and Colonel Baron Arendt. One payroll record for James says, "Deserted January 6, 1777." James Duncan Jr. was born May 12, 1777 and James Sr. was back at camp and on the rolls by May 22, 1777.
