From the Hazel Green Herald we find that Rufus apparently stabs this person in Jan 1893. By April 1893 he is on trial. Does anyone know who John Staniford was or anything about his family or the circumstances of his murder? Thanks Marge Jan. 1893 St. Helens Lee Co. John Staniford, who was stabbed some time ago near this place by Rufas Hill, died last Wednesday night. The grand jury found an indictment of murder in the first degree. Hill is at large yet. Feb. 17, 1893 The govenor has offered a reward of $125 for the capture of Rufas Hill, who murdered John Staniford some time ago.
I don't have anything on John Staniford, but found marriage record for Rufus Hill. On the Lee County Marriage Records, I find Rufus Hill marrying for the 2nd time to Rachel Angel (her second marriage too), on 03 Aug 1899. Rufus is 37, a farmer from North Carolina. His parents are Joel Hill and Arrena Moore out of NC. I wonder if this is the same Rufus Hill being mentioned in the stabbing.
