Stephen was supposed to be born about 1680 in Scotland & died in 1759 Lunenberg, VA. Mary was born 1698 Scotland. They were supposed to have had 9 children: > JAMES 1720 VA > WILLIAM 1724 VA > SAMPSON 1725 VA > UNKNOWN FEMALE 1730 VA > BENJAMIN 1730 VA > ISOM 1732 VA > DAVID 1734 VA > EDWARD 1736 VA > HENRYETTA 1738 VA > > Benjamin & James were supposed to have children that married. I have lots of info I got from someone & at the LDS site. I have too much to post here. Most of that info has turned out to be highly unlikely. I would love some help straightening this mess out. I have that several Caudill's married other Caudill's. > > If this sounds like your line please email me. This line lived in Wilkes County North Carolina; Lunenberg, Virginia & Kentucky(with my direct line in Breathitt County Ky) > > Thanks!!! > > Shelly Platz > Shelly, The Letcher Caudills are my husbands' line. I gave more info if needed. Brian Caudill's home page is another great resource: http://home.mpinet.net/bcaudill/kygenweb/letcher.htm Pat First Generation 1. Stephen CAUDILL, M. Born in Possibly Scotland. Caudill is a well known Melungeon Surname. The surname Caudillo (Spanish/Portuguese) was present at the St Elena Colony in 1566 (recruited by Captain Juan Pardo, a Spanish Officer most likely of Portuguese Origin. [1] A Stephen Caudill (Cordell, Cordle, or Caudle as the name spelled differently in many sources, and three of the names were used in the 3 instruments - Agreement to sell, the deed, and the acceptance of the deed - recorded one after the other in one of the deed books, by the same County Court Clerk's employee), origin unknown, who secured a small farm grant in Old Surry County, Va, moves into Brunswick Co., Va., then to Lunenberg Co., Virginia. By the slimest thread we go through a single child, James Caudill, Sr., who moves to N.C. Two of his sons become Revolutionary Soldiers of the N. C. Line, Stephen and James, Jr. Following the War, three of the sons move to S. C., James Jr., Matthew and Thomas. James, Jr. and Matthew return to Wilkes Co., N. C. for a while before moving on to the Letcher County area of Kentucky. Thomas does not return to N.C. but moves to the Western part of Kentucky. Another son, Stephen, remains in Wilkes County through the 1810 census, but later in August that year, he is one of the Charter members of the Indian Bottom Baptist Church formed that summer in the present Letcher County area. The youngest son, Abner, remained in the home county of Wilkes. Were there other children or daughters of this family? If so, they were not found.[2] Stephen married Mary, F. They had the following children: 2 i. James, M (~1720-~1784) 3 ii. Sampson, M 4 iii. William, M 5 iv. Benjamin, M 6 v. Isham, M 7 vi. David, M Second Generation Family of Stephen CAUDILL (1) & Mary 2. James CAUDILL Sr, M. Born abt 1720 in Old Surry Co, Virginia.[2] James died abt 1784; he was 64.[2] James appears on the 1752 Lunenburg County, VA, Tax List which would indicate he was 21 years old, or older, being of military age. The 1784 North Carolina census states he was over 60 years of age, thus born before 1724. Neither James nor his sons are listed in the 1782 Wilkes County, NC, Tax List, yet his sons, James Jr. and Stephen served in the Revolution from Wilkes County in 1780. A James Coddle bought 140 acres on November 2, 1784, from Benjamin Morgan for 50 pounds (Wilkes County Deed Book A-1, Page 452). The land was located on Sandy Creek, near the Fork of Brush Creek on the Middle Fork of Roaring River. It ran west to Hamons Creek including an improvement made on this land by Henry Gambrill. The following minutes of the Old Roaring River Baptist Church of Wilkes County, NC, may apply to James Caudill, Sr., and his wife Mary, or it is possible that it applies to his son James Caudill, Jr., and his wife Mary: * Saturday ye 12th of July 1787: The Church setting to order Bro Thomas Morgan & Sister Morgan joined by letter and also Bro James Caudill joined by experience. * Saturday ye 8th of September 1787: Also the Church setting to order and etc. As also the Church recvd Bro James Caudill into fellowship and he was Baptised. * Saturday ye 13th of July 1788: Also Sister Mary Caudill joined by experience and Baptism. * Saturday ye 12th of August 1790: The Church setting in Order the Church thought proper to deny James and Mary Caudill Fellowship for telling big storys such as Church could not credit and then refusing to hear Church. * Saturday ye 12th of August ????: The Church setting in order, and etc. Also the Church delt with Bro James Caudill for saying he read three chapters by head and that he thought he could read the Testament without the book, and that he retained that notion for near twelve months, the church could not disprove, and so concluded to lay it over and look to the Lord and try to get better satisfied. On November 3, 1799, James Caudill, Sr., "for goodwill he has for his son Abner Caudill" deeds his 140 acre tract on Sandy Creek of Roaring River. Matthew and Stephen Caudill, witnesses. Just when and where James and Mary died is not known. It is believed James probably died and is buried in Wilkes County, NC.[2] ABT. 1 JAN 1747/48 when James was 27, he married Mary YARBOROUGH[2], F, in Lunenburg Co, Virginia.[2] Mary's maiden name of Yarborough or Yarbrough has never been proven and it is not known exactly where it originated. However, there is a Surry County, NC, marriage record for a James Caudle and Mary Yarbrough on January 22, 1849. This James Caudle was born ca. 1823 and was the son of William and Gracie (Broadway) Caudle (reference "Appalachia Crossroads: The Caudill Family", pages 2036 and 2039). It is not know at this time how this James Caudle connects with James Caudill, Sr., if indeed he does at all.[2] They had the following children: 8 i. James, M (~1753-1840) 9 ii. Stephen, M (~1763-1839) 10 iii. Thomas Aaron, M (1764-1848) 11 iv. Matthew, M (~1766-) 12 v. Abner, M (~1773-) 3. Sampson CAUDILL[3], M. 4. William CAUDILL[3], M. 5. Benjamin CAUDILL[3], M. 6.
