I think the Preaching and Dinner on the Ground was a custom in many Kentucky counties. Most of them were more like a homecoming. Most were held over a weekend. Some were held on Saturday and were usually at a cemetery. If near Memorial Day, people in the community cooked the dinner and anyone that came to decorate the cemetery were treated to preaching, dinner and then lots of good singing. If held on Sunday, then usually after the morning service of Sunday School and Preaching , then there was the dinner cooked by the ladies of the Church, and then in the afternoon there was singing. Was a good time for everyone to mingle and those that had moved away came and enjoyed being with the "home folks". > [Original Message] > From: <LoisBrownCombs@aol.com> > To: <KYBREATH-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 4/4/04 2:33:25 PM > Subject: [KYBREATH-L] Re: Dinner on the ground > > Archie Cope writes: > > <<we were going down to the Puckett Cemetery, they were having a Dinner on > the Ground and there would be Preaching and Singing. >> > > I hope you'll forgive this Yankee, but this is an expression I have heard but > a custom I am not familiar with.
