I am interested in finding out more abou the Highland Institute that was in Breathitt County from 1880 until it was incorporated into the School Systen in teh 1930's. It was a school and an orphanage. I am really trying to find the children of William Short and Symara Gilbert were supposedly placed in an institution of some sort after their parents died. The names were Louise Short, Edna Short Jessie Short, and Lurla Short. All 4 daughters of William Short and who died in 1912, at Athol, Ky. We don't know just when Symaria died. She is also listed as Samira or Smara and on the 1880 census of Owsley County was listed as Sonorah. William Short died in June 1912, and their son, Grover Cleveland died in Dec. 1912, both from TB.
