I certainly do thank you folks who have come forth with directions to Spicer cemetery. Only have one problem - is the Canoe Rd. before or after crossing Old Buck bridge? Beth
There is a cemetery called Spicer-Turner Cemetery, it's up to the left of the old post office at Canoe. ----- Original Message ----- From: <psfitch@insightbb.com> To: <KYBREATH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 14, 2003 4:47 PM Subject: [KYBREATH-L] Ky Highway 3237 also called Canoe Road. > The bridge is called Old Buck, the road on the left before you go over the bridge is KY Hwy 3237 - Canoe Rd. > > > ==== KYBREATH Mailing List ==== > We need old photographs for the Genealogy Archives? The bridge is called Old Buck, the road on the left before you go over the bridge is KY Hwy 3237 - Canoe Rd.
Is that the way to Canoe? ----- Original Message ----- From: <rdgab@kih.net> To: <KYBREATH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 13, 2003 12:52 PM Subject: [KYBREATH-L] Rt. 315 Breathitt Co > Beth, > I can get you to 315. The reason I am trying to locate these various cemeteries - phyically - is I am making an appendix for a family history book I am working on. This appendix will list all of the cemeteries from the text, with driving instruction on how to find them, so others will have an easier time locating them. Some I have been too, but there are a LOT of them I have never, nor never will visit myself. The book covers over 300 years and the ENTIRE family name. Also will have an appendix of all the towns listed, with their counties and states. Names have changed so much over the years, that this job is not the easier one to do. I started out with switchboard for the bigger cemeteries that had offices, then used findagrave.com and that helped a lot too. Now I an asking the subscribers of the various mail lists to help me. These cemeteries I have now are the "left overs" that I still need to find locations for. Thanks to all of you who have helped, and I do appreciate your efforts. Beth
Beth: Go here for an Index to all the Breathitt Cemeteries: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kybreath/cemetery/cemeteries.htm When you find the one you want, or think it is, click on the name. It will take you to another page giving data. Click on the first line below the box - TopoZone.com. That will get you a map showing the exact location of the cemetery. Here is the URL for the map you want: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=37.4381&lon=-83.4619 Adjust the scale in needed to see larger area. I used this site to map out all my cemetery visits in May, and for another trip in a month. It was very accurate. The only thing it didn't help with was to know if you could drive there or would have to walk or climb up to it. <G> We had to do all three. That's where it really helps to ask the folks in the area. Happy hunting.
To find your cemetery go to this link: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form Just type in the info. Beth, I can get you to 315. From Jackson take Hwy 30 west that will be across the bridge at Mcdonalds. Stay on 30 you will come to a bridge crossing the Middle Fork River [litle over 9 miles from Jackson] after you cross bridge take first road to left and you are on 315. I am not sure where the Spicer farm is. :-) Judy
Sorry Beth, That was the best I could do for you. I am from out of town too. I am sure some local people would be glad to help you. It is great that the cemetery books tell the locations that much for us. ~May all your family trees branch toward the stars~ Jerri Conrad 104 Tari Ct. Hamilton, Oh. 45013 JerriBudCnrd@aol.com
Beth, I have looked for several "family" type cemeteries in the area. I have found that the best thing to do is to just stop and ask people. Look on a map, find Rt.315 and get on it. Stop at the first store or town--post offices are always good, or firestations--or just ask anyone who happens to be out in their yard where it is. Folks have lived in this region for generations and it's for sure that someone will know where the "old Roger Spicer" farm is. Heck, whoever you ask may even be a relative! A few months ago we were down for a genealogy trip. Stayed at the Jackson Inn. Didn't know where we were going but asked the hotel clerk. Turns out he not only knew where one of the cemeteries was located---but it was on the farm his family owned and he was a cousin!!! Also turns out he lived next door to my husband's uncle who lives in Chavies in Perry County. On that same trip we were looking for another one. I had a general location, much like yours. We looked for the nearest little "burg" and went driving on a scenic route. Came out near a little store/post office in Athol. Asked a lady sitting on the porch. She pointed us in the right direction and said it was "a purt good distance from here up that a way." We went up "that a way" a few miles then asked a man who was getting in his car to leave (by now we are on a one lane gravel road). He told us to go up a couple miles, cross the creek at the log barn, then a couple more miles ...so we did. Then we asked a guy working on his tractor in his barnyard. He told us to cross another creek, hang a right (but go up past it, turn around first because the turn was too sharp to make from that direction) and head up the holler about 3 miles. Then cross another creek and go on up the mountain. Said we could drive right up to it and there was room to turn around. We stopped one more time at the bottom of the hill to make that turn around (he was certainly right about that!) and to ask some folks sitting on their porch if we were going right. They confirmed it for us and said they'd watch for us to come out in case we got stuck or something. And that's just a couple of my good experiences there. Just remember...no one gets in a hurry about anything. They are good people and the majority of them will help you if they can. We had similar experiences in Powell and Perry counties also. If you have a name you want me to look for, I will be glad to do that for you. Hi Doy, I also am researching this line, I descend from Henley & Jane 'Tate' Haddix's son John Buster 'Butter' Haddix and his wife Sarah 'Sally' Turner Haddix. Do you descend from John also?
