Dear Cousins, When I started doing family research in 1981, some of you like Jess Wilson had been at it for years. I did not know how to do research other than to ask all the old folks about their people. I got back a few generations on most lines and reached the end of their knowledge. I went to the library and checked out six books on how to do family research. I skimmed through them and went to work looking at census, magazines and family histories. I found a few cousins doing family research and called or wrote them. I couldn’t wait to get the mail everyday! I went back six months later and checked out the same books and have been trying to learn and "do it right" since then. One goal, still not reached, was to get each of my lines “back to the boat”. I used two success principles in my research. 1. Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise. 2. You have to “give to get”. I sent ever person I wrote a SASE and my chart and ask for help. I got hundreds of letters and packets filled with information on my ancestors. I still have every letter or piece of paper sent by all of those wonderful cousins and/or researchers. I am very grateful to them all. I have been on line doing research for almost 10 years. Being homebound most of the time, it has kept me sane and opened up genealogy resources and contacts that I may never have found or seen with out computers. I am still willing to share anything I have, as my health allows and I still need help. As long as I can do research, I want to extend my pedigree by sharing and correct all mistakes in my book, “Morris Fork, Kentucky”. I can’t write a lot but I can copy and paste most days. Can anyone help with Thomas Centers and Jennie Dunaway who married about 1898 per census info. I am researching the Centers line and I have not been successful in finding Thomas' parents. Jim Dunaway and Nancy Barnett are Jennie's parents per her death certificate. Hi Sherry and Group, I was in Jackson, Breathitt CO KY last May for 4 days of Cope cemetery Clean-up with the South family related to my Copes'. Iam related to everyone in Breathitt CO KY thru James P. Cope ( 1786 VA- 1857 Breathitt CO.) & wife Mary Hammon and James D. Cope ( 1798 VA - 1886 Breathitt CO ) & Elizabeth Crawford. Wiley Cope my 3rd-grt- is the father of James D. Cope and a brother of James P. Cope . Wiley and James P. Cope are sons of James & Elizabeth Cope of 1810-1820 Floyd CO KY. My Cope family are found with many of the Boone allied families in Rowan CO NC 1768 and 1772. I believe my Cope family are from New Castle CO DE 1683-1729 where Oliver Cope is listed 1696/97 by the Stidhams also found in Breathitt CO KY. There are Squire Boone desc.s in Breathitt CO KY and Quaker desc.s from Chester CO PA where a branch of the Cope's are listed 1712 and later. I have the 1810-1820 Clay CO KY census records with Wiley Cope and 1830 Perry CO KY census records with Wiley , James P. ,James D. , John and my 2nd-grt-grd-father Mason Williams Cope listed. Of all of these Copes' my Mason Williams Cope is the only one who went to TX by 1845. Mason W. Cope's son John Miles Cope ( my grt-grd-father ) was born in near Jackson, Breathitt CO KY in 1827 and had a town of Copeville,( was Farmersville twp ) Collin CO TX named for him. The 1768 Rowan CO NC Hunters and Willcocksons who marr. Boones are in Farmersville, TX 1860 - 1880. I have the complete 1840-1870 Breathitt CO KY census records and chart most of the families listed there since most of them are related to me. Brenda, You can obtain information about how to get a Kentucky death certificate from the following website: http://www.vitalrec.com/ky.html This gives all the needed information. You can do a Google search and find other sources that can get one in a few days, for a higher price. It normally takes about 3 weeks by mail and costs $6.00 from Frankfort. The certificate USUALLY gives names of father and mother, date and place of birth and death, marital status, burial or disposal place, informant (source of information). They are most helpful.
