Sandy, Margaret Hayes has said that Mahala wasn't married but the kids are supposed to be by Willis Brewer. I am trying to find out if he is connected to my Brewer's. Okay, has anyone solved the mystery of who's the father of the Robinsons from Hawkins County Tennessee who married into several Breathitt families? Some say the parents are Benjamin Robertson and Celia Patterson of Dobbs County, North Carolina but there is a Benjamin Robinson on the census in Dobbs County in 1790 after the last three children were born in Tennessee??? OK got the first one finally typed and I figured it would be easier and faster to send them to the lists instead of each person individually, so here number one. Reno Evening Gazette-Dec 29 1936 Accused Slayer is Shot Dead by Victim's Mother ==== Rain of Bullets Startles Courtroom as Trial Opened in Kentucky = Two Spectators Wounded During Melee; Defendant Dies Within Hours = Jackson, KY Dec 29-Johnny Shepherd, charged with murder, fell in court here today under a rain of bullets from the mother of the man he is alleged to have killed. Stray bullets wounded 2 spectators and bruised another. Mother opens fire- The Breathitt County Court, scene of bitter feud trials tin the old days, had just been called to court by Judge George W. Little for Shepherd's examining trial. Deputy Sheriff John E. Rice said Mrs. Viola Wickline, 35, mother of Harvey Gabbard, 17, opened fire without a word, her eyes bulging and face pale. Shepherd, 18, fell in a heap as he sat on the defendants side of the court room. George Shouse, a spectator, was critically wounded. Moss Noble, an attorney, fell with a bullet in his leg. A bullet bruised the knee of Howard More, a spectator. The spectators about 150 in number, fled pell mell. Shepherd was sent to the hospital and upon reports being received that he had died. Judge Little swore out murder warrants against Mrs. Wickline and three others. Others Accused William Wickline, husband of the accused woman; Mrs. Mattie Downs Haddix and Buck Gabbard, a one-legged man, were the other 3 named in the hastily drawn warrants. DeputyRice said Moore declared Mrs. Haddix had fired one of the shots but other eyewitnesses denied she had. All four refused to talk about the case. Gabbard, a son by a former marriage of Mrs. Wickline, was shot to death Christmas Eve. Shepherd, a cripple, was accused of murder and his brother, Noah Shepherd, of being an accessory. Shouse who was shot in the chest was said at the hospital to be suffering from a pierced lung but was expected to recover unless pneumonia set in. He is married and has 3 children. Noble was taken home after a bullet was removed from his leg. Moore, 62, former miner, said his knee cap was bruised by the bullet that went through his hat that which he hung on his knee.

John was Clerk of the Court in Wood Co., now WVA, and donated land for the first county courthouse. He moved to Tennessee and then on to I forget where. He had daughters of the appropriate age for one of them to have been Charity (one was named Lydia). There were two other Stokeleys in Parkersburg, Cornelius and Samuel. Samuel was John's nephew, so Cornelius may have been John's brother, as these were the only Stokeley's in town. Does any of this seem reasonable? Elizabeth, I forgot to ask for clarification on this... John was Clerk of the Court in Wood Co., now WVA, and > donated land for the first county courthouse. Elizabeth, This is the right bunch for sure. I had Phenarah Trent married to an unknown Edwards in my database, but not much else. No dates or kids listed for them at all---just names. I have wondered about Charity's name too. Originally someone had given me Stockley but I agree, lots of times maiden names were used as given or middle names then and it makes sense that Stokely was her maiden name rather than Stockley. I thought that when I saw it. I had some of the Trents from around that time born in Hawkins County Tennessee---though not Charity, James to be specific. What you say about the other Stokelys also makes sense though I had not seen any of this before. I think we're on the right track here. I'd appreciate your/your daughter in law's filling in the gaps where ever possible. I'll be glad to share about my end of the Trents. And I'll share anything I find on Charity that I come across. Want me to list what I have on the family so far? I'd be glad to share. James Trent was the son of Henry Trent and Charity. I don't know what you have on the mysterious Charity, but this is my theory. I believe her maiden name to have been Stokeley (she named one of her children Stokeley), and that she was the daughter of P. (poss. Prettyman?) Stokeley and his wife, Fannie?. Elizabeth
Elizabeth, Is the the same James Trent who married Arminta Miller? I'd definitely like more info. Let me know what you find out. I greatly appreciate it!!!! I'm having trouble finding descendants of today from them. By the way, we are having a King/Boyd and Allied Family reunion this May 30 at Natural Bridge State Park in Slade, KY (near Wolfe Co.). I am looking for Trents/allied families to invite. Serilda married my ggrandfather, Ally King. She was his first wife and the mother of my grandfather, Johnie Elisha King. Ally inherited her father's farm when she died--Henry Elgin Trent's land. Any info is appreciated! Have a nice weekend. Your Serilda Trent's father was the brother of my daughter-in-law's James Wesley Trent her ggf). We have sort of wandered away from the Trents lately, but they were all related in some degree. I will ask her if she happened to see anything the last time she was out in the cemetery. Elizabeth Smith Virginia
My great grandmother was Serilda Trent. She was the daughter of Henry Elgin Trent and Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Pelfrey. She had one brother that I know of, Taylor. They were from Wolfe County too. I wonder if this Thomas Trent and Laura Parks connect? I suspect they do but that I don't have enough info at this time to make a connection? Can anyone help??? They were siblings married to siblings. Thomas' family settled in Wolfe County I think. His daugter Stella Risner is still alive and I met her this past fall. Would love to know if your daughter in law is related to them. > > Thanks for replying! > Shelly > > EMSCRS@aol.com wrote: > I think that I have heard of this, but it would be my daughter-in-law who > would know, as her family were Trents. Do you know who Cordnelle's parents were? Viola Jones was m. to Bruce Gabbard. Bruce s/o Isaac Gabbard and Belle Baker. Isaac was the s/o Henry Gabbard and Lucinda Cundiff. Johnny Shepherd was the s/o Charles Shepherd and Cordnelle [unsure of spelling of Cordnelle] Parks. I would like copies of both.
