    1. [KYBREATH-L] Gabbard Fued Article
    2. Sorry it has taken me so long to get this typed and posted. I have a lot on my plate right now :( But here goes: Sunday Times-Signal Zanesville, Ohio Sunday Dec 1930 ONE DEAD AND THREE WOUNDED IN FAMILY FEUD --------------------------- Two Kentucky Families Start To Shoot It Out Following Quarrel Over "Turkey Shoot"; Daughter Badly Wounded, Found Lying Along Side of Dead Father; Sons Blamed ----------------------------- Jackson, Ky-Dec 20- One man was killed and three persons including a 19 year old girl, seriously wounded this afternoon as a result of a quarrel between two families that flared as a turkey shoot six miles from here. The men injured are not expected to live. The man killed was Ike Little, 55. Wilton Gabbard, 29, was brought to the Bach Hospital stabbed and beaten so severely that hospital attendants said he probably would not live till midnight. Little's daughter, Virgie, 19, was shot but expected to recover. she was taken to her home. Gabbard's Father, Pierce Gabbard, 55, was shot in the abdomen and taken to Highlands Hospital about 15 miles away. Breathitt County officers were seeking Little's three sons, Fred, George and Herman, in connection with the wounding of the Gabbards. Little's body was discovered lying on a mountainside near Chenowee, with his wounded daughter lying nearby. County officers then found Wilton Gabbard farther down the trail, and later found Pierce Gabbard. They said the three sons of Little had apparently attacked the Gabbards when notified of their fathers slaying. Coroner James T. Goff left for the Chenowee community to conduct an inquest. ========================================================= Here are a few more stories from the same paper involving Kentucky (same day also): doesn't involve GABBARDS, and I dot even know what county some of the cities are in but wanted to pass them along anyway! KILLED DURING FIGHT Marion, Ky. Dec 20- Erell Fritz, 25, was shot and killed and George Foster, 66, was stabbed, but not critically hurt, in a fight tonight. Officers said Fritz attacked Foster with a knife and Foster fired three times, killing his assailant instantly. they had quarreled earlier in the day. ========================================================= MEN SHOT EACH OTHER; QUARREL OVER WOMAN Harlen, Ky. Dec 20- County officials today investigated a fight which resulted in the fatal shooting of two men yesterday. Brit Howard, 60, and Jeff Daniels,25. The officers were told they shot each other at the home of Mrs. Lizzie Smith at the head of Brownie's Creek, after a quarrel over the woman.

    3. I was told that at this time, when they were bringing Jason Little back from Lexington, that there was a group that did not want him tried for this murder. So, they holed up in the courthouse to keep them from being able to hold court. And also, while they were holed up in the courthouse, they burned the records to keep warm. My question, is "didn't they know we would be looking for those records in later years and why couldn't they have burned the furniture instead of the records?<G> Yes his first wife was Lucinda Turner, who was the daughter of Samuel & Sarah 'Herald' Turner. Jason's mother's name was Mary Polly 'Gambill' Turner WILMA JOHNSON

    3. I have a photocopy of a typed document titled "Genealogy of Bach" which was copied for me at the Breathitt Library by my cousins. At some point someone has added handwritten notes that identify where individuals lived, who they married, etc. For the family of William J. Bach (Buck) among other things they have written "m. James Thurston" beside the name of Mary Elizabeth Bach. The original typed document shows Mary Elizabeth & Ollie as two different people, they are the same person, she married Nelson McIntosh 1906, he died 1910, she died 1919. This has been verified personally by her descendants. The handwritten additions shows Nelson McIntosh married to Ollie's sister America Bach, not correct. My question is: Did a James Thurston marry one of the daughters of William J. Bach and if so which one?

    3. In regard to the recent discussion of Blevins; I wonder if anyone sees a connection to the following; Hughes, Blevins - McMinn County, TN, KY In "More from Adventurers on the Western Waters, by Kegley," the Blevins name was mentioned. <These hunters were probably Jack and William Blevins mentioned in other accounts (Fries, Moravian Diaries, 1, 307).> Does anyone know how or if these Blevins relate to John Hughes, the longhunter? Is the following John Hughes the same? John HUGHES listed below is said to be born in Rowan County, NC. - Rev. War Pension Abstracts; John Hughes, s1536, North Carolina Line. Also served in St. Clair's defeat. Applied 9-05-1832, McMinn County, Tennessee, age 80. He lived in Burke County, North Carolina at enlistment and later moved to Blount County, Tennessee, then to McMinn County, Tennessee. Rachel BLEVINS was a witness. I thought he might be connected to my James Hughes as both he and John are shown on the 1830 McMinn Co. Census. My James Hughes has a son Caleb Starr Hughes who I thought was possibly named for Caleb Starr, a man of note among the Cherokee. Also his son Meredith Childers/Childress Hughes had a large contingent of Indians come to visit him in Clay County, Kentucky after he moved there. Notice that the first few children were born in South Carolina and James' wife was born in Georgia. Later, his son says in a census record that his father (James) was born in N.C. Anyone have any ideas on this? My line; James and Margaret HUGHES. Believe he or Margaret are Cherokee connected. They left McMinn County, Tennessee in 1835 (they are shown on the 1830 McMinn Census). My gr.gr. grandparents are Lucy Hughes and John Murphy. 3. We've been discussing a pattern of migration from Hawkins County, Tennessee to Breathitt, have any of you noticed ancestors coming from Russell or Scott County Virginia before Hawkins County and Breathitt? I keep bumping into those same counties. How about some who moved on to Madison or Johnson County Arkansas about 1830-1840?

    3. My grandfather, John W. Dean was born in Scott County, Virginia area in 1858. He moved to Wise County, Virginia and then on to Breathitt County, Kentucky where he married Ella Deaton born in 1894 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. He died in an accident there in 1928. Some of his children and grandchildren followed him from Virginia to Breathitt Co, but I have no idea what happened to them...........................for that matter, I have only located one living sister of my mother's. She is living in Kentucky now. One of the first census records I bought about 8 years ago was the 1850 Breathitt CO KY census for 30 dollars and today it is on the internet for free. The 1840 to at least 1880 Breathitt CO KY census records are online and these were some of the very first census records put on the internet . The Clay CO KY census records are online and the Copes' are on the 1810 to 1820 Clay CO KY census records there and the 1810 ( Alpha listing on this one ) and 1820 ( enumerated ) Floyd CO KY census . My Cope family listed on the 1850 KY census records- 1850 Breathitt CO KY- 1) James he is 64& Mary Hammon Cope- she is 64 -her parents are listed as Philip Hammon of the Indian Spy fame marr.
