Its a long standing custom in Kentucky going back to Colonial Times. In recent times it has changed little in appearance or "customs". As most know, the older cemeteries are "family owned" So it was a custom each spring to go a visiting the deceased. Most cemeteries are extremely hard to get to or on ridge tops or forgot creek property. Mostly done on weekends if at all possible or holidays. Was a time for preaching, food and frolic {within reason} In our line, it was also a time to preach and take up serpents. Foot washing, baptism and the like was sometimes done all after a successful "meeting". Some "lines" also used it as a time to rid themselves of haints and boogers. {Long Story} Some of the more remote areas had a wilder meeting
I think the Preaching and Dinner on the Ground was a custom in many Kentucky counties. Most of them were more like a homecoming. Most were held over a weekend. Some were held on Saturday and were usually at a cemetery. If near Memorial Day, people in the community cooked the dinner and anyone that came to decorate the cemetery were treated to preaching, dinner and then lots of good singing. If held on Sunday, then usually after the morning service of Sunday School and Preaching , then there was the dinner cooked by the ladies of the Church, and then in the afternoon there was singing. Was a good time for everyone to mingle and those that had moved away came and enjoyed being with the "home folks". > [Original Message] > From: <LoisBrownCombs@aol.com> > To: <KYBREATH-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 4/4/04 2:33:25 PM > Subject: [KYBREATH-L] Re: Dinner on the ground > > Archie Cope writes: > > <<we were going down to the Puckett Cemetery, they were having a Dinner on > the Ground and there would be Preaching and Singing. >> > > I hope you'll forgive this Yankee, but this is an expression I have heard but > a custom I am not familiar with. Lois: I think I will ask some of the people who are more familiar with this practice to give us an answer as I moved away as a small boy and the one I mentioned in the story is the only Dinner on the Ground I ever attended. But basically it was a picnic adjacent to the cemetery as a rule there was a church service before. Everyone who had people buried in the cemetery would be asked to come regardless of their church affiliation. But a Church would usually sponsor it and it gave the Minister new ears to preach to. Hopefully someone can answer better than this. The "high" we all get when we break down those brick walls makes it all worth it. Just keep at it, do something else for a while, go back to it, do this as many times as it takes. You'll get there. What fun would it be if we didn't have anything or anyone else to look for?
What was your grandmother's name? My husband's grandmother was a Begley also. She was Nancy Begley Abner Barger. She is buried on Abner property in Perry County Kentucky. Thanks. I know about those highs. I've been doing this for quite a few years now starting with my own family. I'm so much further ahead there and when I hit a wall there, I can usually go in another direction and find something. This one is tougher, not having any family to help out with it, asking questions and what not. Maybe thats why I'm so determined to try to find out what I can. Its the least I can do for my husband. It has actually helped him to understand his mom a little more since he was a bit bitter about her mean streak and didn't really mourn her death. She had alot of skeletons and he can now understand it a bit better. I don't want him hating his mom, but to further understand what made her tick. She was 44 when he was born and 82 when she died, and he never really knew her inside.. just the shell that she presented to the world. Today was one of those days (rainy again!) where it seemed that I would try to make a dent again. I did get a little bi! t more information or at least direction by posting that email this morning. Thanks again for your support!! Cheryl Karen <gtskjs@mvn.net> wrote: The "high" we all get when we break down those brick walls makes it all worth it. Thanks to all who responded. I appreciate it immensely. I'm sorry if I came off nasty, but this is all very frustrating when you hit walls and can't get past them. My name is Cheryl, and I read every one of the posts that come in daily. I copied and pasted what I had posted in February below. Plus I added a couple of minor things that I'd like to know. If anyone has ANYTHING on anyone, I would appreciate it. Cheryl Subject: [KYBREATH-L] BEGLEY, HURST FAMILIES Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 21:05:17 -0800 (PST) I'm looking for information on the BEGLEY family from Elkatawa, Breathitt Co. In the 1910 census, this is what I have: Felix Begley, Head of household, Age 56 Manerva Begley, Wife, Age 56 Nannie Begley, Daughter, Age 23 Vina Jewell Begley, Daughter, Age 22 Aura Begley, Daughter, Age 20 William Begley, Son, Age 16 Felix died in 1911. In the 1920 census, there is another daughter Lorraine married to Jason Little. Lorraine and Aura were twins. It also lists Pauline Begley (Age 3) as granddaughter to Manerva. She was daughter of Nannie Begley I'm also looking for information on Elijah HURST family of Elkatawa: 1910 census for Elijah Hurst: Elijah Hurst, Head of household, age 36 Nannie Hurst, wife, age 33 Edgar Hurst, son, age 13 Clayton Hurst, son, age 11 Robert Hurst, son, age 9 Abbie Hurst, daughter, age 6 Gertrude Hurst, daughter, age 4 Thelma Hurst, daughter, age 1 1/2 Elijah was not listed on the 1920 census. I assume he passed away. Nannie was listed as head of household. James "Edgar" was not listed on 1920 census. Records that I have show that he married Myrtle Little in 1919 On the 1930 census, Nannie Hurst was remarried to Joseph Newland. She apparently was a Post Master for a short time, and operated a large farm in Elkatawa. She also was a school teacher in Breathitt county. Which is why I believe there are people who know of her, and have maybe some answers to what I'm looking for. The 1930 census also lists under their household a daughter Pauline, who according to birth certificates that I have, was actually a daughter to James "Edgar" and was the daughter of Nannie Begley. Pauline was my husband's mother. She was a very secretive person who apparently was ashamed of her birth circumstances. She was raised by the Hurst family for some reason. There were rumors that her mother (Nannie Begley) was perhaps in some kind of mental institution, but I don't know the truth of this. Any information anyone might have on any of this would be helpful. Thank you, Cheryl --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
